2023 Academy Of Law Alumni Fellows Induction Ceremony Program, Maurer School Of Law - Indiana University
Academy of Law Alumni Fellows
The Academy of Law Alumni Fellows was established in 1985 to recognize alumni whose careers are defined by exceptional personal achievement and dedication to the highest standards of the profession.
Academy Fellows are part of an elite group that includes US senators, federal judges, successful business leaders, and distinguished practitioners. A committee of anonymous alumni selects each year’s Fellows from among many deserving candidates. To be named an Academy of Law Alumni Fellow is to receive the very highest honor that the Maurer School of Law can bestow.
This year, we are honored to recognize four alumni whose remarkable contributions …

What's Love Got To Do With It?: Contemporary Lessons On Lawyerly Advocacy From The Preacher Martin Luther King, Jr., Deborah J. Cantrell
What's Love Got To Do With It?: Contemporary Lessons On Lawyerly Advocacy From The Preacher Martin Luther King, Jr., Deborah J. Cantrell
Publications
Lawyers have long been inspired by the advocacy work of Martin Luther King, Jr. From his work on the Montgomery bus boycott, to lunch counter sit-ins, to his March on Washington, Dr. King demonstrated skilled advocacy that resulted in important legal advancements. While lawyers give primacy to Dr. King as an advocate, Dr. King gave primacy to his work as a preacher. This article challenges the legal profession to consider the ways in which Dr. King, the preacher, may be as inspirational and instructive as Dr. King, the civil rights icon. Just as Dr. King's religious values were not abstracted …

Chief Judge Proctor Hug, Jr. And The Split That Didn't Happen, Arthur D. Hellman
Chief Judge Proctor Hug, Jr. And The Split That Didn't Happen, Arthur D. Hellman
Articles
Judge Procter Hug, Jr. became Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit on March 1, 1996. Nine months earlier, eight Senators from five western states had introduced Senate Bill 956. The purpose of the bill, as stated in its title, was "to divide the ninth judicial circuit of the United States into two circuits." If the bill had been enacted, it would have been only the third time in the 104-year history of the federal courts of appeals that a circuit was split. And it would have been the first time that Congress had divided a circuit without waiting for a …

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. and Learned Hand shared a number of characteristics. Both well-known judges, they had uncommonly long careers on the bench and in old age attained a remarkable degree of public prominence. It is not too much to say that the legal profession idolized them both, and certain of their opinions remain staples of law school teaching. Both men even looked the part: Holmes' dramatic moustache and Hand's bushy eyebrows lent credence to the adjective "distinguished." 1 Now they both are the subjects of monumental biographies.
