The Constitutionalization Of Parole: Fulfilling The Promise Of Meaningful Review, Alexandra Harrington

Almost 12,000 people in the United States are serving life sentences for crimes that occurred when they were children. For most of these people, a parole board will determine how long they will actually spend in prison. Recent Supreme Court decisions have endorsed parole as a mechanism to ensure that people who committed crimes as children are serving constitutionally proportionate sentences with a meaningful opportunity for release. Yet, in many states across the country, parole is an opaque process with few guarantees. Parole decisions are considered “acts of grace” often left to the unreviewable discretion of the parole board.

The Right Of All Children To Grow Up With A Family Under International Law: Implications For Placement In Orphanages, Residential Care, And Group Homes, Eric Rosenthal

This article describes the right of all children to live and grow up in a family as it has evolved thirty years after the adoption of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and since the 2006 adoption of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The article examines the implications of this right for the millions of children placed in orphanages, residential care, and group homes around the world.

Contemporary American society has decided that, whatever may be the benefits and harms of liberalizing marijuana use by adults, we should continue to outlaw the sale of recreational-use marijuana to children and adolescents. Even the states that permit recreational marijuana use under state law draw the line between adults and minors. Unfortunately, some companies pay only lip service to that line.
