Domestic Violence Victims A Nuisance To Cities, Filomena Gehart

Unless municipal nuisance ordinances change, domestic violence victims can face eviction just for calling the police. Nuisance ordinances generally impose fines on a property owner or landlord when the police are called to respond to incidents of crime a certain number of times at the same residence. Many nuisance ordinances also revoke a landlord’s rental license if a property is deemed a nuisance. However, many of these nuisance ordinances do not have an exception for incidents of domestic violence and, consequently, victims are scared to call 911 or request police assistance. Distinguishing Households From Families, Katharine B. Silbaugh

The study of the relationship between all families, whether marital or non-marital, and households, is underdeveloped, despite extensive study of the mismatch between family law, which is still focused on marriage and parenthood, and family practices. Often, in an effort to update the discourse, discussions of non-marital families seem to deploy households or living arrangements as a substitute classification in the place of the old marital family. The goals of the Homelessness and Legal Advocacy Clinic are to educate students in homelessness related issues, such as housing, public benefits, family law, and consumer law. In addition to interviewing clients at the Clinic's office, Clinic students interview homeless individuals at the Coalition for the Homeless, the Women's Residential Counseling Center, and potential clients who contact the Clinic.
