This collection includes three different albums. Two of them are bound in traditional Japanese binding with rice paper; the other may have been constructed to imitate the Japanese bound ones. These albums include Emma Guffey’s travels, from traveling around Japan and returning home periodically. They also include photographs of her time living in Japan. The photographs in this album include many small panorama photographs of nature and architecture, and there is a possibility that these albums include a few early colored photographs.

The first album, labeled “1901-1904,” begins with a few photos of her final year at Bryn Mawr. It …

Finding Aids: Guides to the Collections

This is a collection of personal and professional papers related to the Hopkins v. Price Waterhouse (Wash., D.C. Federal District Court) and Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins (U. S. Supreme Court) cases. The final decision capped a seven-year battle against Hopkins’ employer for gender discrimination and her final victory in 1990 helped to expand workplace discrimination laws to include gender stereotyping.

The collection date ranges from 1967-2001 and includes correspondence, court documents, materials related to the book So Ordered: Making Partner the Hard Way (University of Massachusetts Press, c1996), newspaper and periodical publications, photographs, and a scrapbook.

Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher (1924-1995) applied to the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1946. Her application was denied, and in Sipuel v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Oklahoma had to provide her with the same opportunities for a legal education as it provided other citizens. Rather than admit her to OU, the state established a law school specifically for her. She refused to attend, and her attorneys argued that the school did not afford the same educational opportunities as OU. The Oklahoma Attorney General conceded, and Fisher was …
