COVID-19 has transformed the way we live and work. It has caused the processes and operations of businesses and organisations to be restructured, as well as transformed business models. A 2020 McKinsey Global survey reported that companies all over the world claim they have accelerated the digitalisation of their customer and supply-chain interactions, as well as their internal operations, by three to four years. They also said they thought the share of digital or digitally enabled products in their portfolios has advanced by seven years. Our essay has five parts: (i) a discussion of how external forces are reshaping the economics of today’s legal industry; (ii) examples of the types of decisions that tend to drive up the cost of bills in contravention of ethical duties; (iii) a discussion of possible reasons for those decisions (including a short discussion of social science explanations); (iv) a description of how attorneys can use data analytics tools to self-govern how they staff, deliver and bill for their legal services; and (v) recommendations for how both clients and law firms can benefit from proactively managing, on the front end, …

A heightened velocity of change enveloped the legal profession over the last two decades. From big law to rural practitioners, the traditional law firm model proved ripe for disruption. This disruption is fueled by several discrete changes in how legal services are provided, including technological advances that allow for the automation of many routine tasks and the disaggregation of legal services; enhanced client sophistication and cost-consciousness; global competition from offshoring routine legal services; the rise of the domestic gig economy, creating a new wave of home-shoring legal services; and competition from non-traditional legal services providers. A brief item in the Hearsay section of the June 2017 ABA Journal was headlined "2%." This number indicated an increase in the percentage of lawyers, from 2012 to 2016, "who worked remotely within the legal industry." Making one's "office" a location other than the physical space leased or owned by oneself or by an employer is hardly news, even as applied to the work of lawyers. Policymakers in numerous jurisdictions are debating whether to allow their law firms to raise capital on the stock market. In this article, we look at the benefits for listing Hong Kong's law firms. We argue that such listing would help redress previous historical disadvantages local firms have faces vis-a-vis foreign rivals doing business in the city.

Charged by the New York State Unified Court System with the responsibilities of reviewing and reporting on gender biases existing throughout the New York legal industry, the New York Task Force on Women, comprised of judges, leading practitioners, and academic scholars, set forth a plethora of evidence revealing the depth of gender biases in the New York legal industry.
