To anyone unfamiliar with the interventions made by avant-garde artists into the art world and occasionally wider society during the middle of the 20th century, this volume delivers a very readable account. The artists, the objects they made and the discussions they generated are selected here in relation to the particular practices and contexts emergent in Brazil following the chaos of World War II (during which the country remained neutral). Although the study by the National Committee Against Discrimination in 1979 could not determine the “true” incidence of racial discrimination, it did produce some startling results. For example, if a black person were to visit three private apartment complexes, the probability of his encountering racial discrimination would be sixty-one percent. Moreover, an increase in the number of visits dramatically increased the probability of discrimination. The probability of discrimination would be ninety percent if the black prospective renter were to visit seven complexes. The likelihood of discrimination in the sale of housing was also found to be high. For instance, if …

Can The Boat People Assert A Right To Remain In Asylum?, Brian Roberts

World political reaction to the Southeast Asian refugee crisis has not asserted the refugees' human rights under international law. As a result, most of the refugees lack security from forcible return to the conditions they fled. They would have that security if the world powers act instead to implement non-refoulement, an established moral principle that arguably has attained the status of customary international law.
