Previous studies have shown that there are several immigrant-specific factors that shape immigrants' perceptions of crime and police (e.g., Correia, 2010; Weitzer, 2014). First, some researchers have found that immigrants evaluate their lives in the host society based on their previous experiences with crime and the criminal justice system in their home country (Sun & Wu, 2018). Second, the social networks that immigrants form in the host society influence their views of crime and police by serving as a source of information for immigrants (Ackah, 2000). Finally, their experiences with crime and the justice system in the host society affect …

With society scrutinizing the American criminal justice system, a standard of ethics becomes ever so important for law enforcement officials, members of the bench, and correctional personnel. Creating a code of conduct not only benefits the individual players in the criminal justice system but it also protects the integrity of each institution. Unfortunately, one of the most important judicial branches in the criminal justice system, the United States Supreme Court, does not have, nor follow an ethical code of conduct. This creates a problem for criminal justice practitioners, the media, and society. This article examines the current requirements for a …

The current study used an experimental vignette (n = 1,093) to examine the effects of perpetrator sex and age, and victim sex and age, on simulated juror sentencing recommendations for individuals convicted of sexual offenses (ICSO). Path analyses were used to see if differences in punitive attitudes could be explained by perceptions of dangerousness participants attached to experimentally manipulated variables, as hypothesized by attribution theorists. Results show that participants consistently recommended longer sentences, higher fines, and indicated greater support for post-release sanctions for male offenders, older perpetrators, and for offenders who victimized younger adolescents. Path analysis demonstrated that perceptions of …

This study explores the educational and work experiences of immigration lawyers. Areas to be explored in interviews include typical academic paths, the challenges immigration lawyers commonly face in practicing immigration law, and the ways they manage them. Recent literature suggests that immigration lawyers encounter many ethical challenges in their work and have increased rates of burnout. (Markham, 2020) Immigration policies present their own challenges with assisting clients, and recent COVID restrictions have added to these existing issues in the immigration system. A snowball technique is used to locate study participants, and interview data will be obtained using zoom. This study …
