It is fitting that the Michigan Law Review should dedicate this issue to the memory of Mr. Justice Murphy. From the day of his matriculation in 1908, the relationship between Frank Murphy and the University of Michigan, and particularly the Law School, was a warm and intimate one. While he was on the campus, his deep idealism and attractive personal qualities not only made him widely known but brought him the affection and regard of his fellow students, members of the faculty, and officers of the University. Henry Moore Bates, Professor Emeritus of Law and Dean Emeritus of the Law School, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 30, 1869. He was the son of George Chapman Bates and Alice E. Bates. He received his early education from private tutors and the public schools of Chicago; in the fall of 1886 he enrolled in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts of this University; he received the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy in June of 1890.

There are people to whom any sense of fitness would assign a long life. Henry Moore Bates is one of these. In full vigor of mind until the end and before any physical deterioration had occurred to render his days uncomfortable to himself or his family, he died April 15th, on the sixteenth day following his 80th birthday. At eight o'clock in the evening before he died he was in bouyant spirits, his humor was keen and kindly, as always; his laughter was young. Eight hours later the end came. He was unafraid.
