Law And The Wisconsin Idea, Erika Lietzan, Paul D. Carrington Sep 1997

Law And The Wisconsin Idea, Erika Lietzan, Paul D. Carrington

We recall a summer of contentment when American law was suffused with optimism, a season ending a long winter of despair and disorder. For the first fifteen years of this century, many (and perhaps most) American lawyers were filled with confidence that America had healed the wounds of civil war and was healing those of class struggle. We could, and we would, overcome all obstacles to peace and prosperity, not only for our people but for all mankind. This, it was widely believed, would be our century. As early as 1879 Daniel Coit Gilman, the premier educator of his time, …

Revamping The Law Tutorial, Nadja Alexander, Ann Black

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The lecture/tutorial format is the dominant structurethrough which law is taught in Australia. This articleexamines the learning environment of the law tutorial, andsuggests approaches aimed at maximising the learningexperience for students, on the basis of students’ learningpreferences. The discussion utilises Golay’s learningpattern assessment in developing an understanding of thedifferent learning styles of students. Based on thisanalysis, activities are advanced which advocate andimplement joint tutor-student responsibility for learningwithin tutorials. It is argued that students will learn moreeffectively, and expand their learning experiences wheninvolved directly in the structure, format and content ofthe tutorial itself.

Inclusive Teaching Methods Across The Curriculum: Academic ·Resource And Law Teachers Tie A Knot At The Aals, David Dominguez, Laurie Zimet, Fran Ansley, Charles Daye, Rodney O. Fong

This article describes an educational journey of seven diverse law teachers, located in different parts of the country, at various stages of our careers, who, in the course of preparing a simple panel, found that we had created a truly rewarding experience of our own. We write with the conviction that we need to share what we learned from those four months of "schoolwork" and from the AALS program we eventually presented in January, 1997. As we reconstruct our collaboration on inclusive teaching methods and ponder where it is taking us, we find we worked through the following stages of …

Because I believe a breadth of reading enhances one's ability to think and write, throughout the years I have tried to encourage extra curricular and diversified reading to be done in conjunction with my Legal Writing class. Unfortunately, yet understandably, law students generally only do the required work, but not more. As a consequence, I have discovered, over time, that the "readers" in my classes continue to read while the "non-readers" never take the opportunity to discover what advantage there might be in taking my advice. Because no change has occurred in students' overall attitudes, I decided to make life …

If It Can't Be Lake Woebegone . . . A Nationwide Survey Of Law School Grading And Grade Normalization Practices, Robert C. Downs, Nancy Levit

Faculty Works

This article explores various methods of grade normalization used by law schools. Based on a survey of 116 responding ABA accredited law schools, 84% have some form of grade normalization policy, and the trend is toward adoption of grade normalization. The survey assessed the types of normalization plans (distributional requirements, required means, required medians, set standard deviations, and informal policies), as well as the reasons schools have adopted such plans. It also inquired about methods for ensuring faculty compliance as well as justifications for departures from grade norms.

The article considers and responds to the arguments against grade normalization and …

In judging pedagogical issues, most law professors favor their own experiences as students: the best way to teach is the way they were taught. I suspect that I am no different in this respect. Unlike most faculty, however, I was taught without the grading game playing a central role in my education. My undergraduate education was at a small, public, interdisciplinary, liberal arts college, with no departments, no majors, no curricular requirements to speak of, no tests and, most critically, no grades. I loved my education. It stays with me today. I attribute that retention and enthusiasm to the learning …

Even though modern word processing and electronic mail greatly facilitate communication, one still must compose the basic letter, memorandum, or electronic message. In an effort to cut down on the time and intellectual intensity of this endeavor, I offer the following suggested form letter to the dean. This format may be used within basic word processing packages or for creating e-mail messages. All you need do is choose the most appropriate insertions for your basic message, and the message will be electronically created.
