China's Use Of International Law In Border Disputes: The Cases Of India And The Soviet Union, Larry R. Schreiter Oct 1974

China's Use Of International Law In Border Disputes: The Cases Of India And The Soviet Union, Larry R. Schreiter

IUSTITIA

Despite American "containment" in the fifties and sixties, China was nevertheless a major actor on the international scene. The loci of China's practice of international politics ranged from the Bandung Conference to its ideological foray into European politics following the Hungarian rebellion in 1956. Along with this activism in the international environment, China turned her attention in the late fifties to the question of gaining mutual agreements with her neighbors on the delineation and regulation of the boundaries. This concern brought about some marked changes in bilateral foreign policy, and required dealings of both an ideological as well as technical …

Communist Chinese Attitudes Toward United Nations Membership 1945-1971 An Essay, Victoria E. Docauer Oct 1974

Communist Chinese Attitudes Toward United Nations Membership 1945-1971 An Essay, Victoria E. Docauer

IUSTITIA

Let us here examine the question of Communist Chinese representation in the United Nations in the context of a broader question: the attitude of Communist China toward international law. Was it only United States interference which kept Communist China out of the United Nations? What is the position of Communist China in regard to international law? Has the People's Republic been the lawless nation that it is sometimes described to be? In an attempt to provide questions, one must examine those arguments which emphasize the lawlessness of Communist China and seek to determine the attitude of the Communist Chinese toward …

The Kenyan Constitution And The Question Of Succession: The Influence Of A Strong Leader, Barbara Kelley Apr 1973

The Kenyan Constitution And The Question Of Succession: The Influence Of A Strong Leader, Barbara Kelley

IUSTITIA

Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya, is over eighty years of age. The prospect of the people of Kenya having to select a successor to President Kenyatta raises fundamental questions regarding the status of Kenya's constitution in terms of its having assumed, in the minds of Kenyans, the aura of legitimacy to the extent that they will accept its mandate as the supreme law. This paper will be an attempt to analyze, first, the process of legitimization of the Kenya constitution, specifically in regard to the provisions for succession to the presidency; and secondly, to ascertain what, …

Does "Food For Peace" Assistance Damage The Bolivian Economy?, Melvin Burke

School of Economics Faculty Scholarship

Do commodity surplus shipments in fact "encourage economic development in the developing countries ... that are determined to improve their own agricultural production ... "?1 Or conversely, is it true that "food aid is damaging to the countries which receive it, and they should be helped to increase the productivity of their own farmers"?2 The former Bolivian Minister of Petroleum, Marcelo Quiroga, who was largely responsible for the nationalization of the Gulf Oil subsidiary in his country, apparently believes "Food for Peace" aid is damaging to the Bolivian economy.

Land Reform In The Lake Titicaca Region, Melvin Burke Jan 1971

Land Reform In The Lake Titicaca Region, Melvin Burke

School of Economics Faculty Scholarship

Bolivia's National Revolutionary party (MNR) seized power in April 1952 and a year and a half later in August 1953 promulgated the agrarian reform law, which redistributed the land of the haciendas to the former Indian tenants and others. This comparative economic study of the haciendas and ex-haciendas in the Lake Titicaca region of Bolivia and Peru was undertaken to answer three important, but largely unresolved, questions about land reform: (1 ) Which land-tenure system-large estates or small peasant farms-affords the agriculture laborers and cultivators the greater freedom of mobility, opportunity, income, and education? (2) Did the Land-tenancy conditions of …
