The "Polaroid Experiment" In South Africa--A Progress Report, Beryl Unterhalter
The "Polaroid Experiment" In South Africa--A Progress Report, Beryl Unterhalter
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
The business activities of the Polaroid Company in South Africa came under attack in October of 1970, when a small group of Polaroid workers who called themselves the Polaroid Revolutionary Workers' Movement received wide publicity for their protests concerning an alleged anomaly in the company's annual report. According to the Polaroid Revolutionary Workers' Movement, the report, while alluding to the company's role in combating racism and in providing equal opportunities for all employees, described its expanding field of operations and increased profits in South Africa, a country in which racial discrimination is widespread. The Movement further pointed out that part …

Punishment For War Crimes: Duty--Or Discretion?, Michigan Law Review
Michigan Law Review
In 1968, a movie called The Graduate received wide critical acclaim for characterizing the malaise of youthful America. For many, the scene most representative of contemporary irrelevance took place during the protagonist's homecoming party, at which a businessman, with grave and repetitive insistence, encouraged the recent college graduate to enter the plastics industry. In a CBS-TV news interview on November 24, 1969, Paul D. Meadlo revealed his participation in an incident in Vietnam that has captured the horrified attention of the nation. Meadlo, twenty-three years old, is a machine operator in a Terre Haute, Indiana plastics factory.

Crimes Against Humanity And The Principle Of Nonextradition Of Political Offenders, Manuel R. Garcia-Mora
Crimes Against Humanity And The Principle Of Nonextradition Of Political Offenders, Manuel R. Garcia-Mora
Michigan Law Review
It is thus the purpose of this article to discuss the nature of crimes against humanity in an effort to determine whether they can be classified as political offenses. It is hoped that from the uncertainty and confusion which appear to underlie the practice of the State, some useful legal principles may be extracted.

The Legal Status Of The Red Cross, Wesley A. Sturges
Michigan Law Review
Red Cross is a term well known in the world at large; so is the heraldic emblem of the red cross on a white background. Many people in many lands use them to indicate and symbolize a variety of humanitarian purposes, principles and services. When the term is used as a proper name, generally it identifies an organization which is lawfully authorized to carry out those purposes and services under that name. Organizations by that name have been accorded exclusive authority to carry out the given humanitarian programs, exclusive authority to use the words, whether as a proper name or …

The Genocide Convention And The Constitution, Myres S. Mcdougal, Richard Arens
Vanderbilt Law Review
What is traditional for common crimes can scarcely be oppressive innovation for mass-murder. Even freedom of communication is not, furthermore, an absolute in democratic preference: security and human decency must likewise have their place.
It is no little irony that argument must be made in support of a convention to suppress genocide. "The spectacle," writes a contemporary journal of opinion, "of modern man explaining his right to existence is an odd one." The Genocide Convention is but one of many interrelated measures in a world-wide program to secure peace and respect for the dignity of the individual human being. Rational …
Review Of International Law And Some Current Illusions And Other Essays, By J. B. Moore, Henry M. Bates
Review Of International Law And Some Current Illusions And Other Essays, By J. B. Moore, Henry M. Bates
Reviews
Professor Bates writes: "Most timely ... is the publication of this volume of papers by the most distinguished and the most widely experienced American scholar in the field of international law....
"Judge Moore is a firm believer in the so-called 'equality of nations' and contends that an association based upon any other theory merely invites trouble. Nor does he believe that force can be safely relied upon to preserve international peace....
"The book is of very great value. Every page of it compels thinking and reflection; moreover it is good reading even for the uninitiated...."
Rules Of Warfare, Edwin D. Dickinson
Rules Of Warfare, Edwin D. Dickinson
Articles
Professor Dickinson anticipates the 1921 Conference of Washington on arms control and limitation in light of the recent world war and the special situations in the Far East. "War is abnormal, the negation of law and order, the exaltation of force..... This does not mean that codes of war law, so called, have no place or function ...."
