Why There Should Be An Independent Decennial Commission On The Press, Lee C. Bollinger

In 1947, the Commission on Freedom of the Press chaired by Robert M. Hutchins, published its report entitled "A Free and Responsible Press:" Sharply criticized by the media when published, the Hutchins Commission Report (as it has come to be known) seems to have assumed only minor status within the history of freedom of the press in this century, as well as among reports on social problems generally. In this article, I will consider whether the Hutchins Commission Report deserves a different fate. Protecting Defamatory Fiction And Reader-Response Theory With Emphasis On The German Experience, Henry Ordower

Examines the litigation in Germany surrounding the publication of Klaus Mann's novel Mephisto. Analyzes the concepts of libel and defamation in fictional works and concludes that neither injunctive relief nor damages is appropriate because of the limited risk of injury and the potential for adverse impact on creative expression.

At the 1972 National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Chicago, the assembled gathering was surprised to receive a mailed greeting from their sometimes adversary, President Richard Nixon, which claimed, "In no other country does the broadcaster have more freedom than in the United States, and I emphasize that my Administration is dedicated to preserving that heritage." Four days later, however, the Justice Department filed against NBC, CBS, ABC, and Viacom International, then a CBS subsidiary in the business of syndicating television programming, an antitrust suit which alleged that the networks were guilty of various trade-restraining and monopolistic activities under Sections …
