Widespread use of massive data and increasing reliance on spaceborne infrastructure are two of the emerging megatrends of the early 21st century. However, both come with liabilities: movement and processing of large data volumes is very expensive, and reliance on spaceborne infrastructure adds risk that problems in the still incompletely-understood space domain might cause work disruptions.
ExoAnalytic proposes the use of Space Analysis and Research Centers (SpARCs) as a way to begin addressing both these issues. A SpARC is a facility which integrates volumes of data collected on satellites, centrally analyzes it, and makes available resulting useful information. The …

FAA frequently blocks strategically located airspaces to ensure operational safety in the vicinity of hazardous operations such as space launches and military exercises. As demand for access to airspace continues to rise, the need for, and the impact of blocked airspaces is likely to grow. Users such as space operators have no advanced insights into potential NAS impact of airspaces blocked due to their operations, nor do they possess ways to minimize it. The growth in launch and reentry operations in the National Airspace System (NAS) presents the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with the challenge of integrating them more efficiently while also minimizing effects on other NAS users and maintaining safety. Currently, to maintain safety and account for unforeseen events such as vehicle breakup, the FAA segregates large amounts of airspace, called Aircraft Hazard Areas (AHAs), from traditional NAS users during launch and reentry operations. Making AND Breaking: How reliable are some water pipes?

Three different types of pipes were tested to see at what point in time they would break. The pipes, PVC pipe, PEX pipe, and CPVC pipe, were filled with water and attached to a helium filled weather balloon. The ends of the pipes were sealed to trap the water inside. The pipes were secured onto a payload in a Styrofoam box surrounded by cheese cloth. This frame secured the pipes and ensured that they stayed in one place and could not move around the container. Microsurgery is commonly performed with operating microscopes or loupes to repair traumatic injuries, damage from cancer surgery, etc.; however, the prolonged, awkward, and constrained postures from using these equipment puts microsurgeons at risk for musculoskeletal pain and injuries. An alternative heads-up displays may improve surgeons’ ergonomics by allowing microsurgeons to perform the procedure in a more comfortable and ergonomic position. The study compares the effect of microscope, loupes and video displays on postures during microsurgical targeting task. This study incorporated three steps to contrast displays. Natural disasters or environmental shocks have the potential to disrupt local agricultural systems as well as distant agricultural systems through cascading effects. In this work we selected two distinct environmental shocks and traced their cascading effects on land use change. Quantifying cascading effects is a salient issue because climate change forecasts indicate an increase in frequency and intensity of global environmental shocks. This study incorporated the concept of telecoupled systems involving interrelating ecological, economic and political/social components. Researchers in the field of Information Visualization have suggested that users’ cognitive abilities would likely to affect their understanding of data visualizations and deeper exploration in the visualizations. However, the evidence is still scant to link between user’s visualization literacy and their cognitive traits. Thus, the research goal of this study is to explore how user’s visualization literacy and their cognitive traits are related. In particular, we focused on two cognitive traits: numeracy and need-for-cognition. Infusion pumps are medical devices that deliver fluids like medication, and nutrients in a precise, timely, and controlled manner that is critical to patient care. It is widely used in clinical settings especially in hospitals, nursing homes and sometimes at home. The developers for the Habitat Monitoring System (HMS) for the Mobile Extreme Environment Research Station (MEERS) Mission Control System (MCS) faced challenges in the design and implementation of their human machine interface. Designing a human machine interface for a diverse group of end users presents technical and design challenges for the developers. By applying human factors concepts and following the engineering process, the development team was able to produce a human machine interface that met the product requirements and satisfied their product owners. The developers for the MEERS MCS were required to develop a novel interface for their product. During the development of the MCS, analytical human factors methods and display principles were implemented to create the user interface. The methods and principles were also used so the MCS had a user centered design. The MCS went through several iterations of design. This presentation discusses the development process of the MEERS MCS from a human factors standpoint.
