Removal Of Eucalyptus Vessel Segments Using Centrifugal Cleaners, Amnuay Ponpued
Removal Of Eucalyptus Vessel Segments Using Centrifugal Cleaners, Amnuay Ponpued
Masters Theses
Two commercial feedforward centrifugal cleaners were used in the study of vessel segment removal from bleached eucalyptus pulp. The reduction of vessel elements yielded a reduction of vessel pick tendency and other problems caused by vessel elements which limit the use of eucalyptus pulp in paper stock furnishes. The operating conditions of the centrifugal cleaners were evaluated for their effect on separation efficiency. Pulp loss with rejects was reduced by multiple stage separation. The Vandercook Proof Press was used to compare the picking of cleaned, original pulp and two higher-vessel-content pulps. Regression analysis and ANOVA showed significant effects of feed …
Process Hazard Review For Drug Development, Rudolph R. Schwarz
Process Hazard Review For Drug Development, Rudolph R. Schwarz
Theses
The development of drugs has become increasingly complex, requiring the use of a wide variety of pharmaceutical actives and isolated intermediates, a majority of which are not always completely characterized with respect to their hazard potential. This can present a source of potential exposure to those who handle these substances during initial drug development, manufacturing of the drug active and ultimately the finished pharamaceutical product. It is, therefore, essential that safety and health information be documented and communicated during the entire drug development process.
The need for application of process hazard review techniques to the development of new drug materials …
Improving Maintenance Effectiveness, Stephen J. Thierry
Improving Maintenance Effectiveness, Stephen J. Thierry
Masters Theses
A methodology is advanced for measuring the productivity of industrial maintenance operations. A work sampling study and a production to maintenance interface survey are conducted to identify the current level of maintenance effectiveness at a food processing plant. Variables affecting maintenance effectiveness are postulated from site observations of the plant maintenance operation. A total of nine changes are proposed; three are implemented as part of this study and six remaining changes are proposed for the future. All recommendations are targeted at increasing the overall effectiveness of the maintenance operation under study.
Implementing An Mrp System In A Job Shop Environment, Kathleen A. Behnke
Implementing An Mrp System In A Job Shop Environment, Kathleen A. Behnke
Masters Theses
"In today’s highly competitive marketplace, many small manufacturers are struggling to survive. The competition to produce a quality product at a competitive price comes not only from other small companies, but also from larger companies and foreign manufacturers, who have learned to produce in a more economical fashion. The challenge of the small manufacturer is learning to compete.
Every manufacturer, whether large or small, has one basic objective: to be profitable. The profit objective is usually achieved using a three part strategy of maximizing customer service, minimizing inventory investment, and maintaining efficient plant operation.
Small companies, including the one in …
The Creation Of An Expert System For Teaching Piano Lessons, Carol Chew
The Creation Of An Expert System For Teaching Piano Lessons, Carol Chew
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Combining the arts with science and technology has had many beneficial results. Computers and music have been connected for many years. Computers have been used in music composition, electronic keyboards, music publishing and digital sound processing. Artificial intelligence has been used in creating expert systems for training people in various fields. An attempt will be made to tie together expert systems for training with current computerized music technology.
This research report proposes that an expert system be developed to teach piano lessons. The fields of music and artificial intelligence will be drawn upon in developing this expert system structure. While …
Packaging Management Organizations: A Case Study, Stephen A. Raper
Packaging Management Organizations: A Case Study, Stephen A. Raper
Masters Theses
"The role of packaging management is taking on an increasingly crucial role as an aid to the success of companies today. This is a case study on the Functional Packaging Management (FPM) organizations of two companies in different industries. The case study examines the structure of the two functions, and examines their missions, responsibilities, and activities. This information is formulated into a definition of FPM for each company. The definitions are then compared to each other and to a literature theorized definition.
The knowledge gained by this case study illustrates that several factors such as the product/market served, alignment in …
Effects Of The Luminous Environment On Managerial Decision Making, Marc Clay Belcher
Effects Of The Luminous Environment On Managerial Decision Making, Marc Clay Belcher
Doctoral Dissertations
"Little is known about the influence the physical environment may have on the way a manager goes about making decisions. This work considers one element of the environment, lighting, and attempts to establish a relationship between that element and the decision strategy a manager may select.
From a review of the literature on the effects of light on man and from the field of decision making, a model is posited suggesting that the luminous environment affects decision making. Since others have established that mood influences how decisions are made, and since it is suggested in the literature that lighting affects …
Continuous Statistical Distribution Curve Fitting And Analysis Tool, Gerald Robie
Continuous Statistical Distribution Curve Fitting And Analysis Tool, Gerald Robie
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This paper reports on the implementation and utilization of a micro-computer based simulation modeling verification and validation tool. The interactive software tool, written in BASIC, computes and displays the frequency distribution of a given set of input data, computes appropriate parameters for a continuous statistical distribution which the user selects as likely to represent the population from which the input data sample was obtained, performs several goodness-of-fit analyses on the resultant distribution and provides sensitivity analysis capability on the input data, distribution type selection and distribution parameters.
The Use Of A Portable Microcomputer As A Data Collection Tool To Support Integrated Simulation Support Environments: A Concept, James E. Wilkinson
The Use Of A Portable Microcomputer As A Data Collection Tool To Support Integrated Simulation Support Environments: A Concept, James E. Wilkinson
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Advances in simulation methodology, and the computer support systems to implement these methodologies, have led to the development of integrated simulation support environments. These environments, or collection of software tools, seek to aid the analyst in developing models, data management and analysis, and data presentation.
While an integrated simulation environment provides a more organized structure for managing and performing simulation projects, and provides a database management structure for storing, manipulating, and analyzing data, they do not address the actual process of going out and obtaining the data. As a result, many of the common problems associated with poor problem and …
Capacity Planning In A Discrete Item Manufacturing Environment, Ali M. Alsebaiee
Capacity Planning In A Discrete Item Manufacturing Environment, Ali M. Alsebaiee
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Capacity planning is a medium-to-long- term production planning tool that enables management to better understand how the demand of its customers have and will affect the available capacity planning. For a successful production and planning control system, management needs to consider the availability of not only the materials and component, but also the required manufacturing capacity. Several capacity planning techniques that deal with capacity planning in a discrete item manufacturing (job shop environment) are discussed in this report. These are Resource Requirement Planning, Rough Cut Capacity Planning, Capacity Requirement Planning, Operation Sequence, Input Output, and Simulation. A computerized capacity planning …
A Comparison Of Present And Future Tasks Performed By Quality Engineers Of Leading And Nonleading American Manufacturing Firms, Zenon Theodore Smolarek
A Comparison Of Present And Future Tasks Performed By Quality Engineers Of Leading And Nonleading American Manufacturing Firms, Zenon Theodore Smolarek
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study identified and compared the level of importance and frequency of performance of 34 selected quality engineering tasks in the present and five years hence and determined potential catalysts for any expected change between the present and the future. Two sample groups of practicing certified quality engineers working for manufacturing companies in the United States were surveyed in three rounds to obtain the data. Group I consisted of 86 engineers working for companies that had been identified as leaders in product quality in a 1985 Gallup study. Group II consisted of 96 engineers from other companies.
The study attempted …
