The Core Of Social Network Modeling: Industrial Engineering., Shannon C. Roberts, Chaitra Gopalappa, Nazanin Nazanin
Science and Engineering Saturday Seminars
Networks are abound in our everyday lives, from disaster response networks to cellular networks to social networks. In this workshop, we will introduce the different types of networks and how Industrial Engineering is used to model these networks. Next, we will describe current social network modeling research done at UMass. Finally, we will delve into hands-on activities that include social network analysis, such as the clustering of people into groups, and modeling of the spread of ideas in a social network, such as how tweets spread on Twitter.

Water Plans And Climate Change Plans In The Northeast And The Southwest, An Pham
Water Plans And Climate Change Plans In The Northeast And The Southwest, An Pham
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
To what degree are water managers in different regions in the United States thinking about and planning for climate change? To answer this question we reviewed water plans and climate change plans in all the cities with populations over 50,000 in the Northeastern and Southwestern regions of the United States. By locating and reviewing water and climate change plans in the described cities in the two regions, we found that of the 101 cities with over 50,000 people in the Northeast, 83 cities had water plans and/or climate change plans that could be found online; only 20 had plans that …
An Evaluation Of Methods To Assess Whether Health Information Technology-Based Tools Improve Weight Loss Measures In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Jocelyn R. Morgan
An Evaluation Of Methods To Assess Whether Health Information Technology-Based Tools Improve Weight Loss Measures In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Jocelyn R. Morgan
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Obesity is a chronic and growing disease defined by weighing 20% or more than the ideal, or having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or more. While natural weight loss is available, many patients are choosing weight loss surgery (i.e., bariatric surgery) as an alternative to lose weight and reduce their risks for comorbidities such as diabetes, heart disease, and sleep apnea. Tools and resources for post-surgical support in the bariatric surgery community have been limited and, in the past, most tools and resources for weight loss have focused on non-surgical weight loss communities; as such, analysis …
Using Computer Simulation To Study Hospital Admission And Discharge Processes, Edwin S. Kim
Using Computer Simulation To Study Hospital Admission And Discharge Processes, Edwin S. Kim
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Hospitals around the country are struggling to provide timely access to inpatient beds. We use discrete event simulation to study the inpatient admission and discharge processes in US hospitals. Demand for inpatient beds comes from two sources: the Emergency Department (ED) and elective surgeries (NonED). Bed request and discharge rates vary from hour to hour; furthermore, weekday demand is different from weekend demand. We use empirically collected data from national and local (Massachusetts) sources on different-sized community and referral hospitals, demand rates for ED and NonED patients, patient length of stay (LOS), and bed turnover times to calibrate our discrete …
The Economic Impacts Of Technical Change In Carbon Capture, Peter G. Rasmussen
The Economic Impacts Of Technical Change In Carbon Capture, Peter G. Rasmussen
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
There is a general consensus in the literature that carbon capture and storage (CCS), a technology that controls CO2 emissions from fossil fuel power plants, figures to be a critical technology to reduce CO2 emissions to CO2 concentration stabilization levels prescribed in the literature. We completed three projects that advance the understanding of how technical change in carbon capture affects both near-future costs of CCS and the economy in the long term. First, we conducted a literature review of near-future capture cost estimates in order to get an idea of how expensive carbon capture will be in …
Optimizing The Safety Stock Inventory Cost Under Target Service Level Constraints, Chetan T. Shivsharan
Optimizing The Safety Stock Inventory Cost Under Target Service Level Constraints, Chetan T. Shivsharan
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
The level of customer satisfaction largely depends on manufacturer’s ability to respond to customer orders with promptness. The swiftness with which the manufacturers are able to meet customer demand is measured by the service level. There are two service level measures typically used. The first one is type 1 service level which denotes the probability of not stocking out over a planning period. The other is fill rate which denotes the proportion of demand satisfied with the existing inventory. We review the rich and diverse literature available on inventory cost optimization under these service level constraints. Subsequently two optimization models …
Electronic Falls Reporting System Implementation: Evaluating Data Collection Methods And Studying User Acceptance, Yi You Mei
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
In this research, we detail the development of a novel, easy-to-use system to facilitate electronic patient falls reporting within a long-term residential care facility (LTRCF) using off-the-shelf technology that can be inexpensively implemented in a wide variety of settings. We report the results of four complimentary system evaluation measures that take into consideration varied organizational stakeholders’ perspectives: 1) System-level benefits and costs, 2) System usability, via scenario-based use cases, 3) A holistic assessment of users’ physical, cognitive, and marcoergonomic (work system) challenges in using the system, and 4) User technology acceptance. We report the viability of collecting and analyzing data …
Electric Power Market Modeling With Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Nathanael K. Miksis
Electric Power Market Modeling With Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Nathanael K. Miksis
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Agent-based modeling (ABM) is a relatively new tool for use in electric power market research. At heart are software agents representing real-world stakeholders in the industry: utilities, power producers, system operators, and regulators. Agents interact in an environment modeled after the real-world market and underlying physical infrastructure of modern power systems. Robust simulation laboratories will allow interested parties to stress test regulatory changes with agents motivated and able to exploit any weaknesses, before making these changes in the real world. Eventually ABM may help develop better understandings of electric market economic dynamics, clarifying both delineations and practical implications of market …
