Applications Of Optimization Modeling In Multi-Disciplinary Engineering Research, Anton F. Astner, Ekramul Haque Ehite, Yang Li, Colin Sasthav Apr 2019

Applications Of Optimization Modeling In Multi-Disciplinary Engineering Research, Anton F. Astner, Ekramul Haque Ehite, Yang Li, Colin Sasthav

Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science Publications and Other Works

Optimization modeling is the process of selection of the best solution to a design problem using predetermined constraints from a set of prospective solutions. Increased computing power has made optimization solvers readily available for business/research needs. For example, Microsoft Excel has a simple, but robust solver. Such solvers can model linear, nonlinear, and integer programming problems that are limited in size. This study shows the use of the optimization model solvers in various research contexts.

Improving Production Flexibility, Christopher T. Patrick, Conrad R. Troutman, Adam Glassman, Kaitlin Payne Dec 2018

Improving Production Flexibility, Christopher T. Patrick, Conrad R. Troutman, Adam Glassman, Kaitlin Payne

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Industrial & Information Engineering

Over the last year, Clayton has paired with the University of Tennessee in order to increase production rates at their Rutledge facility due to a high demand for their homes. Other concerns expressed by Clayton included high employee turnover, fluctuation in demand throughout the year, and lack of space within the facility. Several teams from the University were assigned to this location with the goal of observing and increasing throughput and flexibility within the facility while considering the previously stated issues.

Astaxanthin: A Comparative Case Of Synthetic Vs. Natural Production, Khoa Dang Nguyen Jan 2013

Astaxanthin: A Comparative Case Of Synthetic Vs. Natural Production, Khoa Dang Nguyen

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Astaxanthin, the “king of carotenoids” has been widely used as an animal feed additive for several decades, mainly in the aquaculture industry. Recent studies have led to its emergence as a potent antioxidant available for human consumption. Traditionally it has been chemically synthesized, but the recent market interest has generated interests in producing it naturally via yeast (Phaffia rhodozyma) fermentation, or algal (Haematococcus pluvialis) induction. This work aims to compare these production processes and their impact on the economical, environmental, and societal scale. We also look at the attempts of increasing production yields by altering various …

A New Stochastic Model For Systems Under General Repairs, Haitao Liao Mar 2007

A New Stochastic Model For Systems Under General Repairs, Haitao Liao

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Industrial & Information Engineering

Numerous stochastic models for repairable systems have been developed by assuming different time trends, and re- pair effects. In this paper, a new general repair model based on the repair history is presented. Unlike the existing models, the closed- form solutions of the reliability metrics can be derived analytically by solving a set of differential equations. Consequently, the con- fidence bounds of these metrics can be easily estimated. The pro- posed model, as well as the estimation approach, overcomes the drawbacks of the existing models. The practical use of the proposed model is demonstrated by a much-discussed set of data. …
