Smart Disease Prevention App: Informing The Public In Their Own Geographic Location, Apoorva Sulakhe, Shafali Rana, Zoe Disori, William Nogay, Kyle Plummer, Meredith Shannon, Morgan Young, Alyssa Zielinski, Vincent G. Duffy
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Apoorva Sulakhe and Shefali Rana are graduate students in the School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue. They have both been teaching assistants under their coauthor, Dr. Vincent Duffy, while supervising multiple projects. Coauthors Zoe Disori, William Nogay, Kyle Plummer, Meredith Shannon, Morgan Young, and Alyssa Zielinski are listed in alphabetical order. They were all seniors in School of Industrial Engineering at the time of this project in 2017. The purpose of their study, described in this article, was to develop an application to provide users with accurate information about diseases spreading in their geographic locations.

Engagement & Service-Learning Summit
The purpose of this poster is to further explore the idea of a “SMART” travel app. To design an app that is self-monitoring, that could analyze data and present the best travel options for customers in terms of available providers, price and time. Not only should the app be beneficial to customers but it should also be beneficial to providers. Through a series of analysis, questionnaires and eye tracking experiments our team was able to design an app that will provide customers with the information needed to make a well-informed decision on how to travel from point A to B, …
Impact Of Microscope, Loupes, And Video Displays On Microsurgeons’ Risk For Musculoskeletal Injuries, Yiyu Shi, Denny Yu
Impact Of Microscope, Loupes, And Video Displays On Microsurgeons’ Risk For Musculoskeletal Injuries, Yiyu Shi, Denny Yu
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Microsurgery is commonly performed with operating microscopes or loupes to repair traumatic injuries, damage from cancer surgery, etc.; however, the prolonged, awkward, and constrained postures from using these equipment puts microsurgeons at risk for musculoskeletal pain and injuries. An alternative heads-up displays may improve surgeons’ ergonomics by allowing microsurgeons to perform the procedure in a more comfortable and ergonomic position. The study compares the effect of microscope, loupes and video displays on postures during microsurgical targeting task. This study incorporated three steps to contrast displays. Firstly, 12 participants wearing six reflective markers completed a surgery simulation using all three displays, …
Leveraging Smart Infusion Pump Data For Workflow, Patient Care And Usability Improvement In Human Factors, Yan Ni Ding, Denny Yu, Poching Delaurentis, Kang-Yu Hsu, Joon Hong Kim
Leveraging Smart Infusion Pump Data For Workflow, Patient Care And Usability Improvement In Human Factors, Yan Ni Ding, Denny Yu, Poching Delaurentis, Kang-Yu Hsu, Joon Hong Kim
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Infusion pumps are medical devices that deliver fluids like medication, and nutrients in a precise, timely, and controlled manner that is critical to patient care. It is widely used in clinical settings especially in hospitals, nursing homes and sometimes at home. Smart infusion pumps technology are supposed to be reduce nurses’ workload, but due to the recurring number of alarms which disrupt the workflow of the infusion process, most nurses prefer to use the traditional infusion pumps or work-around the safety features of the smart pumps. Thus, the aim of this research is to leverage Smart Infusion Pump data to …

Engagement & Service-Learning Summit
We are going to make an app that can be used by people traveling through or from ORD airport (Chicago), which will provide live time update for security check line (in terms of time), change of gate for the flight and whether or not the flight is on time. The reason for developing this application is to simplify and improve the passenger’s overall airport experience in order to make it more enjoyable, informative, and time efficient while decreasing the current negative mentality towards traveling. Resources needed to create the prototype would include softwares that help in creating wireframes of the …
Identifying Mode Confusion In Recorded Aircraft Data, James Douglas Thomas, Yul Kwon, Steven J. Landry
Identifying Mode Confusion In Recorded Aircraft Data, James Douglas Thomas, Yul Kwon, Steven J. Landry
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
In recent decades, commercial aviation accidents have occurred due to human-machine interaction (HMI) problems known as “mode confusion.” This is caused, in some cases, by a lack of understanding of onboard systems by pilots. Large amounts of Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) data are available, analysis of which could assist in identification of safety risks in daily operations. Through analysis of pilot reactions and recorded aircraft data, methods to detect mode confusion are developed to improve aviation safety. This study was conducted by inducing mode confusion into a flight simulation scenario and analyzing aircraft data to detect emerging patterns. Three …
