This work is a compendium of different sustainability analysis on new technologies. The first chapter performed a Life Cycle Analysis of a biofuel process where pine woodchips are used to create SynGas. The study was done using a 10 tons gasifier, the mass balance of the reaction and an input/output analysis. All the data obtained was input into a freeware LCA software and the results were compared to the use of regular produced natural gas. This research has led to the development of two mathematical models to optimize the problem of packing a hybrid mix of rigid and moldable items within a three-dimensional volume. These two developed packing models characterize moldable items from two perspectives: (1) when limited discrete configurations represent the moldable items and (2) when all continuous configurations are available to the model. This optimization scheme is a component of a lean effort that attempts to reduce the lead-time associated with the implementation of dynamic product modifications that imply packing changes.

Astaxanthin, the “king of carotenoids” has been widely used as an animal feed additive for several decades, mainly in the aquaculture industry. Recent studies have led to its emergence as a potent antioxidant available for human consumption. Traditionally it has been chemically synthesized, but the recent market interest has generated interests in producing it naturally via yeast (Phaffia rhodozyma) fermentation, or algal (Haematococcus pluvialis) induction.
