Student Papers in Public Policy

The rise of the internet as a fact of daily life is the defining element of the modern age. Widespread use of the internet has fundamentally altered entire industries, and much of American life has migrated online. Dating is augmented by online dating; shopping by online shopping; television by internet streaming.

The digitization of American life has brought with it considerable benefits, including great convenience and innumerable efficiencies, but it has not come without a cost. Although there are many business models used by internet companies, many of the now-largest companies in the world have converged on one entity upon …

Profile Interview With Vincent Duffy, Apoorva Sulakhe

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

Dr. Vincent Duffy is an associate professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University holding a joint appointment with Agricultural and Biological Engineering. Duffy focuses on human factors engineering and ergonomic design. His interest in teaching began early when he was a teaching assistant for IE 386 at Purdue University while pursuing his master’s degree. As an industrial engineering master’s non-thesis student, Duffy realized he had a natural inclination toward teaching. This motivation, along with the support and mentorship of Ferdinand Leimkuhler, the head of the department, turned him toward the fi eld of research. He rejoined Purdue …

A Methodology For Designing Airports For Enhanced Security Using Simulation, Oliver Nwofia, Christopher A. Chung Jul 2013

A Methodology For Designing Airports For Enhanced Security Using Simulation, Oliver Nwofia, Christopher A. Chung

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

With the advent of the new security measures, today’s airports have become increasingly complex and congested. Air and passenger traffic continues to increase; consequently, the need for intelligent design concepts is required. Unlike all other existing airport designs that focused exclusively on operational performance, this study focused on the development of a new airport terminal design methodology that takes a proactive approach to minimizing the effects of security disruptions while simultaneously maximizing operational performance and passenger flow. The study addressed the impact of security operations on both the design of airport facilities and passenger flows, and discussed options and scenarios …
