Microstructure-Informed Modeling Of Hydrogen Diffusion In Zirconium Polycrystals, Alireza Tondro
Microstructure-Informed Modeling Of Hydrogen Diffusion In Zirconium Polycrystals, Alireza Tondro
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Zirconium alloys are widely used in the core of various types of nuclear reactors. During service, the hot water coolant reacts with zirconium and releases hydrogen atoms that ingress into the lattice of the metal alloy. With time, hydrogen concentration exceeds its terminal solid solubility limit in zirconium, and a brittle phase known as zirconium hydride forms. This phase severely deteriorates the mechanical properties of zirconium alloys, leading to safety concerns regarding the integrity of nuclear pressure tubes. This thesis uses a crystal plasticity finite element model coupled with diffusion equations to study the effects of localized deformation at the …
Effect Of Ion Irradiation On The Rate Dependence Of Plastic Deformation Of Extruded Zr-2.5%Nb, Konrad P. Mazurkiewicz
Effect Of Ion Irradiation On The Rate Dependence Of Plastic Deformation Of Extruded Zr-2.5%Nb, Konrad P. Mazurkiewicz
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the properties of Zr-2.5%Nb pressure tube material in the transverse direction. Through testing at room temperature, material properties such as the strain hardening, strain rate sensitivity and apparent activation volume were investigated. The effects of Zr+ ion-implantation occurring at 300°C, simulating irradiation-induced damage, and the strain rate of loading on these properties were also investigated.
Two methods of testing were performed: in-situ micro-pillar compressions and nanoindentation testing. Ion-implantation was observed to increase material strength and hardness. However, certain implanted micro-pillars displayed early localized failure that reduced strength. This finding warrants further …
Near-Ir Laser Ablation Of Simulated Radiologically Contaminated Oxides On Carbon Steel Feeder Pipes, Thao Viet Do
Near-Ir Laser Ablation Of Simulated Radiologically Contaminated Oxides On Carbon Steel Feeder Pipes, Thao Viet Do
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
As nuclear power plants age and retire from service, many countries face significant challenges concerning the safe long-term storage and disposal of large volumes of low and intermediate level radioactive wastes (L&ILW). The volumes of metallic waste are of particular concern, as when metal corrodes it produces hydrogen that could lead to pressure build-up in interim storage and disposal. In Canada, a significant fraction of the metallic wastes for Canada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) nuclear reactors are out-of-core reactor components, such as carbon steel (CS) feeder pipes. The radioactive contamination is expected to be largely confined to the surface oxide layers …
Numerical Investigations Of The Fluid Flow And Heat Transfer And Construction Of Control System For The Canadian Supercritical Water-Cooled Reactor Power Plant, Huirui Han
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Canada participated in the Generation IV nuclear reactors with the Supercritical Water-Cooled Reactor (SCWR) concept. This work focuses on the numerical studies of the fluid flow and heat transfer of the supercritical water in the nuclear reactor fuel bundle, and the construction of the linear dynamic model and the design of the control system for the Canadian SCWR power plant.
Firstly, the fluid flow and heat transfer of the supercritical water in the vertical tube and the rod bundle is numerically investigated to evaluate whether the existing turbulent models could successfully caption the wall temperature variations at supercritical conditions by …
Configuration And Sizing Of Small Modular Reactor With Thermal Energy Storage Within A Microgrid For Off-Grid Communities, Michael W. C. Davis
Configuration And Sizing Of Small Modular Reactor With Thermal Energy Storage Within A Microgrid For Off-Grid Communities, Michael W. C. Davis
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Many off-grid communities in Canada rely on diesel generators for their electricity needs. This is not only expensive but also produces significant greenhouse gas emissions. Small modular reactors (SMRs) have been proposed to replace diesel generators and can be combined with photovoltaic (PV) sources to form a microgrid. However, fluctuations in loads and PV create challenges for SMRs. Integrating a thermal energy storage (TES) system with the SMR can increase the flexibility of the power system to operate more effectively. This thesis first examines methodologies to determine suitable configurations of such a microgrid. Through analysis of the system components and …
A Dislocation-Based Crystal Plasticity Model For Hexagonal Close-Packed Polycrystals, Omid Sedaghat
A Dislocation-Based Crystal Plasticity Model For Hexagonal Close-Packed Polycrystals, Omid Sedaghat
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Due to their low neutron absorption cross-section and good corrosion properties, zirconium and its alloys have been widely used as the structural material in the core of nuclear reactors. These alloys are exposed to an intensive neutron flux which may lead to dimensional instabilities and the degradation of the mechanical properties of the alloy over the service time of the reactor. The changes in deformation behavior and mechanical properties can be traced back to the formation, evolution, and interaction of the irradiation-induced microstructural defects, e.g., point defect clusters, dislocation loops, and complex dislocation line networks. However, the materials constitutive models …
Nonlinear Dynamics Of Carbon Steel Corrosion Under Gamma Radiation, Youn Gyeong Shin
Nonlinear Dynamics Of Carbon Steel Corrosion Under Gamma Radiation, Youn Gyeong Shin
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Corrosion of materials is still an unresolved problem affecting a multitude of industries. One of the grand challenges facing the corrosion community is the development of high-fidelity models for corrosion in actual service environments. The difficulties arise since corrosion involves transfer of metal atoms between the solid and solution phases thus making the system non-adiabatic. Interfacial transfer of atoms increases the chance of establishing systemic feedback between chemical reactions and transport processes, which results in chemical oscillation and periodic patterns on the corroding surfaces. These oscillating behavior in electrochemical measurements and pattern formation on corroding surfaces have been reported in …
Effect Of Ion Implantation On The Mechanical Properties Of The Grain And Grain Boundary Regions Of Inconel X750, Maisaa Nezar Tawfeeq
Effect Of Ion Implantation On The Mechanical Properties Of The Grain And Grain Boundary Regions Of Inconel X750, Maisaa Nezar Tawfeeq
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Annulus gas spacers in CANada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) nuclear reactors are made from the heat-treated Inconel X750 Nickel-based alloy. This alloy is designed to have high strength and creep resistance at elevated temperature. Unlike other reactor designs, the CANDU reactor has a high thermal neutron fluence, which results in an enhancement of the radiation damage and the internal production of helium and hydrogen. They are thus susceptible to microstructural instability and mechanical property degradation with time. Studies of ex-service spacers have indicated that they display intergranular embrittlement and lower ultimate tensile strength compared to nonirradiated Inconel X750. The primary degradation …
Corrosion Dynamics Of Carbon Steel In Used Fuel Container Environments, Dan Guo
Corrosion Dynamics Of Carbon Steel In Used Fuel Container Environments, Dan Guo
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The current Canadian used nuclear fuel container (UFC) design uses a pressure‑grade carbon steel (CS) vessel with its outer surface coated with a thin layer of copper. One concern regarding the structural integrity of the UFC design is the potential internal corrosion of the CS vessel. Moisture trapped inside a UFC could condense within the gap between the hemispherical head and the cylindrical body of the vessel. The internal UFC environment will be exposed to a continuous flux of ionizing radiation arising from the decay of radionuclides trapped in the used UO2 fuel matrix.
This thesis research project investigates …
A Cfd Assisted Closed-Loop Control System Design For The 37-Element Canadian Scwr Under Full Load Condition, Huirui Han
A Cfd Assisted Closed-Loop Control System Design For The 37-Element Canadian Scwr Under Full Load Condition, Huirui Han
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A method to design the closed-loop control system for the 37-element vertical Canadian supercritical water-cooled reactor (SCWR) fuel bundle has been proposed in this study. The dynamic models used in the controller design are obtained based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the fluid flow and heat transfer of the supercritical water in the SCWR fuel bundle. The Reynolds Stress Model is used in the CFD simulations. Comparisons of the supercritical water flow behaviors and heat transfer phenomenon in the single- rod channel and multi-rod channel are also carried out. The results show that there are secondary flows …
Gamma-Radiation Induced Corrosion Of Alloy 800, Mojtaba Momeni
Gamma-Radiation Induced Corrosion Of Alloy 800, Mojtaba Momeni
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis presents a newly developed mechanism and predictive model for the corrosion of Alloy 800. The Fe-Cr-Ni Alloy (Incoloy 800) is mainly used for steam generator (SG) tubing in CANDU and PWR reactors and is a candidate material for the proposed Canadian Supercritical Water Reactor (SCWR) in which it will be exposed to extreme conditions of high radiation flux and large temperature gradients. The influence of gamma radiation and water chemistry conditions on the corrosion behaviour of Alloy 800 are studied in this work. Ionizing radiation creates reducing (•eaq–, •H, •O2-) and oxidizing …
Thermal Kinetics Of Helium Irradiation Hardening In Selected Alloys For The Canadian Gen. Iv Nuclear Reactor Concept, Feifei Nie
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In this thesis, we present nano-indentation measurements performed to quantify the increase in hardness as a result of He+ and Fe4+ implantation in both Inconel 800H and AISI 310 alloys. After annealing, the softening rate of He+ and Fe4+ implanted samples were compared, and it is found that Ni can slow the helium diffusion. Thermal activation energy Q characterizing this process was similar to the computed thermal activation energy QHe for interstitial helium diffusion within pure nickel. Indentation hardness tests were also performed at various indentation strain rates, to further study the effect of implanted …
Particle Entrainment Studies From Dry And Wet Bed, Saber Ayatollahi
Particle Entrainment Studies From Dry And Wet Bed, Saber Ayatollahi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
During the Fluid Coking Process™ bitumen is sprayed into a fluidized bed of hot coke particles. The bitumen undergoes thermal cracking and is converted into gasses, condensable vapors, and solid coke, which deposits on the coke particles. These vapors rise through the vessel and result in entrainment of coke particles. Wet fine coke particles from the freeboard region enter the cyclone and contribute to the fouling of the Coker cyclones which can lead to the premature shut-down of Fluid Cokers.
The primary objective of this research is to determine how bed wetness affects entrainment.
First, a new fluidized bed was …
Thermal Kinetics Of Ion Irradiation Hardening In Selected Alloys For The Canadian Gen. Iv Nuclear Reactor Concept, Heygaan Rajakumar
Thermal Kinetics Of Ion Irradiation Hardening In Selected Alloys For The Canadian Gen. Iv Nuclear Reactor Concept, Heygaan Rajakumar
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Canada is designing supercritical water fission reactors (SCWR) to increase the thermal efficiency of nuclear power generation from ~34% to ~48%. The temperature and pressure of a supercritical water reactor core is very high compared to a CANDU reactor. This thesis examines irradiation hardening and thermal recovery of two candidate alloys, AISI 310 and Inconel 800H, for the Canadian SCWR.
Samples of both alloys are mechanically ground and polished, then irradiated using 8.0 MeV Fe ions. The use of ion irradiation safely and quickly simulates neutron damage. The change in the hardness of the samples is then studied during a …
Investigation On The Benefits Of Safety Margin Improvement In Candu Nuclear Power Plant Using An Fpga-Based Shutdown System, Jingke She
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The relationship between response time and safety margin of CANadian Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) nuclear power plant (NPP) is investigated in this thesis. Implementation of safety shutdown system using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is explored. The fast data processing capability of FPGAs shortens the response time of CANDU shutdown systems (SDS) such that the impact of accident transient can be reduced. The safety margin, which is closely related to the reactor behavior in the event of an accident, is improved as a result of such a faster shutdown process.
Theoretical analysis based on neutron dynamic theory is carried out to …
