Sequencing DNA provides a positive impact for the biomedical community by understanding a wide variety of applications such as human genetics, disease, and pathogens. The reason the Arkansas Micro & Nano Systems lab is involved with research in DNA sequencing is due to the current, leading industry method. Nanopore sequencing was developed by Oxford Nanopore Technology in which its sequencing method separates double stranded DNA to electrically characterize individual nucleotides traveling through a charged nanopore. Protein aggregation has been linked to many chronic and devastating neurodegenerative human diseases and is also strongly associated with aging. In the case of neurodegenerative diseases, α, β tubulins and tau proteins dissociate in a neuron cell and aggregate both intra and extra-cellularly. Tau and tubulin aggregations were found as one of the major causes of many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s, Picks, Alzheimer’s, Huntington, and Prion. Micro- and nano-scale surface modifications have been a subject of great interest for enhancing the pool boiling heat transfer performance of immersion cooling systems due to their ability to augment surface area, improve wickability, and increase nucleation site density. However, many of the surface modification technologies that have been previously demonstrated show a lack of evidence concerning scalability for use at an industrial level. In this work, the pool boiling heat transfer performance of nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) films, copper oxide (CuO) nanostructure coatings, and 1D roll-molded microfin arrays has been studied.
