Cancer is a group of diseases that affects 1.6 million and kills nearly 600,000 Americans each year. The National Cancer Institute defines it as “diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade nearby tissues” and it is often treated with one or more of the following: chemotherapy, radiation, surgery. The expense for these treatments is expected to rise to $156 billion by 2020. Localized delivery can improve effectiveness and cancer survival rates, decrease the cost of treatment, and decrease the side effects of chemotherapy. The development of analytical methods to detect food contaminants is a critical step for improving food safety. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an emerging detection technology that has the potential to rapidly, accurately and sensitively detect a wide variety of food contaminants. However, SERS detection becomes a challenge in real complex matrix, such as food, since non-specific matrix signals have the potential to drown out target associated Raman peaks. A Sensitive And Label-Free Electrochemical Aptasensor Based On Signal Amplification Of Carbon Nanotubes, Chun-Yan Deng, Hui-Min Fan, Juan Xiang, Yuan-Jian Li

A label-free electrochemical sensing electrode for highly sensitive detection of adenosine was constructed based on the signal amplification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The change in the interfacial feature of the modified electrode was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Using [Ru(NH3)6]3+ as the signaling moiety, adenosine with concentrations as low as 0.027 nmol·L-1 can be selectively detected. Additionally, the fabrication of this present aptasensor was simple, time-saving and cost-effective. Compared with other reported aptasensors, the proposed aptasensor had advantages of excellent sensitivity, selectivity and simplicity, which plays a potential role in development of aptasensor.

CNT membrane platforms are biomimetic polymeric membranes imbedded with carbon nanotubes which show fast fluid flow, electric conductivity, and the ability to be grafted with chemistry. A novel micro-dialysis probe nicotine concentration sampling technique was proposed and proved in vitro, which could greatly improve the efficiency and accuracy of future animal transdermal studies. To enhance the scope of transdermal drug delivery which was limited to passive diffusion of small, potent lipophilic drugs, a wire mesh lateral electroporation design was also proposed which could periodically disrupt the skin barrier and enhance drug flux.

The research presented in this work details the use of a viral capsid as an addressable delivery vessel of photoactive compounds for use in photodynamic therapy. Photodynamic therapy is a treatment that involves the interaction of light with a photosensitizing molecule to create singlet oxygen, a reactive oxygen species. Overproduction of singlet oxygen in cells can cause oxidative damage leading to cytotoxicity and eventually cell death. Challenges with the current generation of FDA-approved photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy primarily stem from their lack of tissue specificity.
