Optical Resonators And Fiber Tapers As Transducers For Detection Of Nanoparticles And Bio-Molecules, Huzeyfe Yilmaz Aug 2014

Optical Resonators And Fiber Tapers As Transducers For Detection Of Nanoparticles And Bio-Molecules, Huzeyfe Yilmaz

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In recent years, detection of biological interactions on single molecule level has aspired many researchers to investigate several optical, chemical, electrical and mechanical sensing tools. Among these tools, toroidal optical resonators lead the way in detection of the smallest particle/molecule with the real time measurements. In this work, bio-sensing capabilities of toroidal optical resonators are investigated. Bio-sensing is realized via measuring the analyte-antigen interaction while the antigen is immobilized through a novel functionalization method.

Not long ago, detection of single nanoparticles using optical resonators has been accomplished however the need for cost-effective and practical transducers demands simpler tools. A tapered …

Hybrid Nanomaterial And Its Applications: Ir Sensing And Energy Harvesting, Yi-Hsuan Tseng Jul 2014

Hybrid Nanomaterial And Its Applications: Ir Sensing And Energy Harvesting, Yi-Hsuan Tseng

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, a hybrid nanomaterial, single-wall carbon nanotubes-copper sulfide nanoparticles (SWNTs-CuS NPs), was synthesized and its properties were analyzed. Due to its unique optical and thermal properties, the hybrid nanomaterial exhibited great potential for infrared (IR) sensing and energy harvesting.

The hybrid nanomaterial was synthesized with the non-covalent bond technique to functionalize the surface of the SWNTs and bind the CuS nanoparticles on the surface of the SWNTs. For testing and analyzing the hybrid nanomaterial, SWNTs-CuS nanoparticles were formed as a thin film structure using the vacuum filtration method. Two conductive wires were bound on the ends of the …

Preparation And Electrochemical Performances Of Cofe2O4/Gns Nanocomposites As Anode Material For Lithium Ion Battery, Mo-Chao Cai, Sen-Rong Cai, Ming-Sen Zheng, Quan-Feng Dong Apr 2014

Preparation And Electrochemical Performances Of Cofe2O4/Gns Nanocomposites As Anode Material For Lithium Ion Battery, Mo-Chao Cai, Sen-Rong Cai, Ming-Sen Zheng, Quan-Feng Dong

Journal of Electrochemistry

The CoFe2O4/GNS was synthesized by a simple one-pot solvothermal method. The results obtained by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the CoFe2O4 particles with sizes of 15 nm dispersed on the surface of graphene uniformly. Electrochemical tests indicated that the CoFe2O4/GNS nanocomposite exhibited excellent cyclic stability with almost 95.8% capacity retention after 100 cycles at the current density of 500 mA·g-1 and delivered a high reversible capacity of 482 mAh·g-1 at the current density of 2 A·g-1.

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Methanol At The Nano Ni-B Amorphous Alloy Powdermicroelectrode, Yi-Xiong Zheng, Shi-Bing Yao, Shao-Min Zhou Aug 2007

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Methanol At The Nano Ni-B Amorphous Alloy Powdermicroelectrode, Yi-Xiong Zheng, Shi-Bing Yao, Shao-Min Zhou

Journal of Electrochemistry

Electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol at the nano Ni-B amorphous alloy powder-microelectrode in alkaline media was studied by using cyclic voltammetry.Compared to the highly preferred orientation(220) nickel electrode,The onset potential of methanol electrooxidation at the nano Ni-B microelectrode is negatively shifted about 0.04V,and the current density is increased approximately by 2 orders of magnitude. Thus, the nano Ni-B microelectrode has very strong electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of methanol. The kinetic parameters were determined with the steady polarization curves. The results show that the rate constants for both the oxidation of Ni(Ⅱ) to Ni(Ⅲ) and the reduction of Ni(Ⅲ) to Ni(Ⅱ) at the nano Ni-B …

Novel Electrochemical Method For Synthesis Of Nanostructured Materials Of Noble Metals Based On Poly(N-Vinylpyrrolidone) (Pvp), Wei Pan Nov 2006

Novel Electrochemical Method For Synthesis Of Nanostructured Materials Of Noble Metals Based On Poly(N-Vinylpyrrolidone) (Pvp), Wei Pan

Journal of Electrochemistry

Gold nanocrystals with controllable size were synthesized through a simple electroreduction method using poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)(PVP) of different polymerization degree as both stabilizer and shape-controller for gold nanoclusters.Individual gold nanoparticles spontaneously assembled into the wire-and ring-shaped nanoparticle aggregates depending on the PVP's dynamic stretching and curling, and precursor nanoparticles grew into flat,single-crystalline nanoprisms with thickness of dozens of nanometers based on the oriented aggregation between particles.Besides,core-shell Au/Ag nanoparticles were conveniently synthesized through two-step electroreduction of noble metal ions in the presence of PVPK30.The electrochemical synthetic method based on PVP provides a new path for preparation of noble metal nanostructured materials with different shape …
