: It is known that the conditions of the Brazilian roadways have an enormous impact over the national economy. In face of this problem, there is a need for new methodologies for pavement analyses and design that can more accurately predict pavement distresses. Among the main methods currently used, one can find purely empirical methods and mechanistic-empirical methods which make use of the pavement structure response. The evolution of numerical methods such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) or the Boundary Element Method (BEM) has made the mechanistic-empirical methods more popular for pavement analysis applications. This work shows a mechanistic …

Wigner Distribution Of A Transducer Beam Pattern Within A Multiple Scattering Formalism For Heterogeneous Solids, Goutam Ghoshal, Joseph A. Turner, Richard Weaver Oct 2007

Wigner Distribution Of A Transducer Beam Pattern Within A Multiple Scattering Formalism For Heterogeneous Solids, Goutam Ghoshal, Joseph A. Turner, Richard Weaver

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Diffuse ultrasonic backscatter measurements have been especially useful for extracting microstructural information and for detecting flaws in materials. Accurate interpretation of experimental data requires robust scattering models. Quantitative ultrasonic scattering models include components of transducer beam patterns as well as microstructural scattering information. Here, the Wigner distribution is used in conjunction with the stochastic wave equation to model this scattering problem. The Wigner distribution represents a distribution in space and time of spectral energy density as a function of wave vector and frequency. The scattered response is derived within the context of the Wigner distribution of the beam pattern of …

Electroelastic Effect Of Thickness Mode Langasite Resonators, Haifeng Zhang, Joseph A. Turner, J. S. Yang, J. A. Kosinski Oct 2007

Electroelastic Effect Of Thickness Mode Langasite Resonators, Haifeng Zhang, Joseph A. Turner, J. S. Yang, J. A. Kosinski

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Langasite is a very promising material for resonators due to its good temperature behavior and high piezoelectric coupling, low acoustic loss, and high Q factor. The biasing effect for langasite resonators is crucial for resonator design. In this article, the resonant frequency shift of a thickness-mode langasite resonator is analyzed with respect to a direct current (DC) electric field applied in the thickness direction. The vibration modes of a thin langasite plate fully coated with an electrode are analyzed. The analysis is based on the theory for small fields superposed on a bias in electroelastic bodies and the first-order perturbation …

Adhesive Contact In Filaments, Xiang-Fa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis Jun 2007

Adhesive Contact In Filaments, Xiang-Fa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This paper studies the elastic contact in filaments induced by surface adhesion, which plays an important role in the mechanical response of fibrous materials (e.g., fiber friction, sliding, compression hysteresis, etc.). During the process, a simple 3D elastic contact model was proposed. The filaments were assumed to be uniform, smooth elastic cylinders, and the adhesive force between filaments in contact was estimated according to Bradley’s approach (Bradley 1932 Phil. Mag. 13 853) that relies on the filament configurations before deformation. Under the action of fiber surface adhesion, the elastic deformation and the size of the contact zone were determined in …

Collapse Analysis Of Nanofibers, Xiang-Fa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis Jun 2007

Collapse Analysis Of Nanofibers, Xiang-Fa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Continuous nanofibers fabricated by the electrospinning technique have found increasing applications (e.g., nanofiber composites, nanofiber devices, bioengineering tissue scaffolding, etc.). For a nanofiber network subjected to a small external perturbation, the fiber segments within the network may deflect and stick to each other under the condition that their surface adhesion energy overcomes the elastic strain energy induced by fiber bending. Therefore, this paper aims to study adhesion-induced nanofiber collapse and relevant criteria. A simple fiber collapse model was proposed, which is based on the contact of two deflected elastic filaments under surface adhesion. Four fundamental fiber collapse modes (i.e., fiber-flat …

Calibration Of Atomic Force Microscope Cantilevers Using Piezolevers, Saltuk B. Aksu, Joseph A. Turner Apr 2007

Calibration Of Atomic Force Microscope Cantilevers Using Piezolevers, Saltuk B. Aksu, Joseph A. Turner

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

The atomic force microscope (AFM) can provide qualitative information by numerous imaging modes, but it can also provide quantitative information when calibrated cantilevers are used. In this article a new technique is demonstrated to calibrate AFM cantilevers using a reference piezolever. Experiments are performed on 13 different commercially available cantilevers. The stiff cantilevers, whose stiffness is more than 0.4 N/m, are compared to the stiffness values measured using nanoindentation. The experimental data collected by the piezolever method is in good agreement with the nanoindentation data. Calibration with a piezolever is fast, easy, and nondestructive and a commercially available AFM is …

Computational Constitutive Model For Predicting Nonlinear Viscoelastic Damage And Fracture Failure Of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures, Yong-Rak Kim, D. H. Allen, D. N. Little Apr 2007

Computational Constitutive Model For Predicting Nonlinear Viscoelastic Damage And Fracture Failure Of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures, Yong-Rak Kim, D. H. Allen, D. N. Little

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

A computational constitutive model was developed to predict damage and fracture failure of asphalt concrete mixtures. Complex heterogeneity and inelastic mechanical behavior are addressed by the model by using finite-element methods and elastic– viscoelastic constitutive relations. Damage evolution due to progressive cracking is represented by randomly oriented interface fracture, which is governed by a newly developed nonlinear viscoelastic cohesive zone model. Computational simulations demonstrate that damage evolution and failure of asphalt concrete mixtures is dependent on the mechanical properties of the mixture. This approach is suitable for the relative evaluation of asphalt concrete mixtures by simply employing material properties and …

Thermoeconomics Of Seasonal Latent Heat Storage System, Yaşar Demirel, H. Hüseyin Öztürk Mar 2007

Thermoeconomics Of Seasonal Latent Heat Storage System, Yaşar Demirel, H. Hüseyin Öztürk

Papers in Thermal Mechanics

A simple thermoeconomic analysis is performed for a seasonal latent heat storage system for heating a greenhouse. The system consists of three units that are a set of 18 packed-bed solar air heaters, a latent heat storage tank with 6,000 kg of technical grade paraffin wax as phase-changing material, and a greenhouse of 180m2. The cost rate balance for the output of a unit is used to estimate the specific cost of exergy for a yearly operation. Based on the cost rate of exergy, fixed capital investment, operating cost, and economic data, approximate cash-flow diagrams have been prepared. The systems …

Wrinkling Of A Charged Elastic Film On A Viscous Layer, Xiang-Fa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Kyle W. Strabala Feb 2007

Wrinkling Of A Charged Elastic Film On A Viscous Layer, Xiang-Fa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Kyle W. Strabala

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

A thin metallic film deposited on a compliant polymeric substrate begins to wrinkle under compression induced in curing process and afterwards cooling of the system. The wrinkle mode depends upon the thin film elasticity, thickness, compressive strain, as well as mechanical properties of the compliant substrate. This paper presents a simple model to study the modulation of the wrinkle mode of thin metallic films bonded on viscous layers in external electric field. During the procedure, linear perturbation analysis was performed for determining the characteristic relation that governs the evolution of the plane-strain wrinkle of the thin films under varying conditions, …

A New Mass Sensor Based On Thickness-Twist Edge Modes In A Piezoelectric Plate, J.S. Yang, A. K. Soh Jan 2007

A New Mass Sensor Based On Thickness-Twist Edge Modes In A Piezoelectric Plate, J.S. Yang, A. K. Soh

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

We propose a new mass sensor based on thickness-twist edge modes in a piezoelectric plate of 6mm crystals. By performing a theoretical analysis, a simple expression of sensitivity is obtained. The proposed sensor has an important advantage in the sense that it can be mounted away from the edge of the plate where the motion is insignificant and, thus, the operation of the device is unaffected.

Effect Of Interface Modification On The Mechanical Behavior Of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composites Using Parallelmolecular Dynamics Simulations, S. Namilae, U. Chandra, A. Srinivasan, Namas Chandra Jan 2007

Effect Of Interface Modification On The Mechanical Behavior Of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composites Using Parallelmolecular Dynamics Simulations, S. Namilae, U. Chandra, A. Srinivasan, Namas Chandra

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations play an important predictive role in understanding the behavior of nanoscale systems. In this paper, parallel MD simulations are used to understand the mechanical behavior of interfaces in CNT based composites. We present an algorithm for parallel implementation of MD simulations of carbon nanotube (CNT) based systems using reactive bond order potentials. We then use that algorithm to model the CNT-polymer interfaces with various levels of interaction as (a) described only by long range Van Der Waals interactions (b) chemically bonded with fixed matrix and (c) chemically bonded with matrix explicitly modeled. It is shown that …

Influence Of Van Der Waals Forces On Increasing The Strength And Toughness In Dynamic Fracture Of Nanofibre Networks: A Peridynamic Approach, Florin Bobaru Ph.D. Jan 2007

Influence Of Van Der Waals Forces On Increasing The Strength And Toughness In Dynamic Fracture Of Nanofibre Networks: A Peridynamic Approach, Florin Bobaru Ph.D.

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

The peridynamic method is used here to analyse the effect of van der Waals forces on the mechanical behaviour and strength and toughness properties of three-dimensional nanofibre networks under imposed stretch deformation. The peridynamic formulation allows for a natural inclusion of long-range forces (such as van der Waals forces) by considering all interactions as ‘long-range’. We use van der Waals interactions only between different fibres and do not need to model individual atoms. Fracture is introduced at the microstructural (peridynamic bond) level for the microelastic type bonds, while van der Waals bonds can reform at any time. We conduct statistical …

Origin Of Photomultiplication In C60 Based Devices, Jinsong Huang, Yang Yang Jan 2007

Origin Of Photomultiplication In C60 Based Devices, Jinsong Huang, Yang Yang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this manuscript, the origin of the photomultiplication effect was studied in C60 based devices by evaluating the wavelength dependent external and internal quantum efficiencies under various biases. The effect of materials with disordered structures on the photomultiplication effect was determined by intentionally integrating both ordered and disordered material structures into one organic solar cell device with a configuration of indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/pentacene/C60 fullerene/bathocuproine (BCP)/Al. Our results show that both the disordered structure of C60 and the charge trapping effect at the C60 /PEDOT:PSS interface contribute to the photomultiplication effect. By studying the C60-only …

A Scientific Foundation Of Collaborative Engineering, S. C.-Y. Lu, W. Elmaraghy, G. Schuh, R. Wilhelm Jan 2007

A Scientific Foundation Of Collaborative Engineering, S. C.-Y. Lu, W. Elmaraghy, G. Schuh, R. Wilhelm

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Collaborative engineering is the practical application of collaboration sciences to the engineering domain. In today’s highly connected technology-driven economy, the production industry must rely on the best practices of collaborative engineering to stay competitive when designing, manufacturing, and operating complex machines, processes, and systems on a global scale. Despite its importance, collaborative engineering is currently more of a practiced art than a scientific discipline. A better understanding of how engineers should collaborate with all stakeholders to accomplish complex tasks that fulfill our increasing social responsibilities is a grand challenge. However, because we currently lack well-defined sciences of human collaboration, we …

Improved Hole-Injection Contact For Top-Emitting Polymeric Diodes, Juo-Hao Li, Jinsong Huang, Yang Yang Jan 2007

Improved Hole-Injection Contact For Top-Emitting Polymeric Diodes, Juo-Hao Li, Jinsong Huang, Yang Yang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this letter, an efficient hole-injection contact was achieved for the top-emitting polymeric light-emitting diodes (PLEDs). The anode has a structure of metal/molybdenum oxide/ poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). It has been found that hole injection was significantly improved by inserting a thin layer of MoO3 between aluminum and PEDOT:PSS. An ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) was used to investigate the change of work function, and photovoltaic measurement confirmed that the improved hole injection is due to the reduction of barrier height, resulted from the addition of transition metal oxide. PEDOT:PSS layer was found necessary in anode structure to further enhance the …

Low Voltage And Fast Speed All-Polymeric Optocouplers, Yan Yao, Hsiang-Yu Chen, Jinsong Huang, Yang Yang Jan 2007

Low Voltage And Fast Speed All-Polymeric Optocouplers, Yan Yao, Hsiang-Yu Chen, Jinsong Huang, Yang Yang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

An all-polymeric optocoupler has been demonstrated with a polymer light-emitting diode (PLED) as the light source (input unit) and a polymer/fullerene photodiode (PD) as the detector (output unit). The electroluminescence (EL) peak of the PLED is 560 nm, and the entire EL spectrum is within the response range of the PD. The optocoupler can work at low driving voltages, 5 V on the PLED and 0 V on the PD. The output photocurrent increases linearly with input current, and the current density transfer ratio reaches 1.5%. The frequency response of the optocoupler is at 500 kHz. With comparable performance to …

Deck-Mounted Steel Post Barrier System, John D. Reid, Ronald K. Faller, Jason A. Hascall Jan 2007

Deck-Mounted Steel Post Barrier System, John D. Reid, Ronald K. Faller, Jason A. Hascall

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

An existing mountable safety barrier system, previously crash tested successfully on a wood bridge deck, was evaluated for use on a fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) bridge deck. In an attempt to avoid expensive full-scale crash testing, components of the existing system were evaluated using worst case conditions on two dynamic bogie crash tests and a series of computer simulations using nonlinear finite-element analysis. Simulation results closely approximated the physical results, with both displaying similar deformation, damage, and force levels. Both testing and simulation demonstrated that the barrier should function sufficiently if used on the FRP deck system. Further, the development …

Regional Mechanical Properties And Stress Analysis Of The Human Anterior Lens Capsule, Ryan M. Pedrigi, G. David, J. Dziezyc, J. D. Humphrey Jan 2007

Regional Mechanical Properties And Stress Analysis Of The Human Anterior Lens Capsule, Ryan M. Pedrigi, G. David, J. Dziezyc, J. D. Humphrey

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The lens capsule of the eye functions, in part, as a deformable support through which the ciliary body applies tractions that can alter lens curvature and corresponding refractive power during the process of accommodation. Although it has long been recognized that characterization of the mechanical properties of the lens capsule is fundamental to understanding this physiologic process as well as clinical interventions, prior data have been limited by one-dimensional testing of excised specimens despite the existence of multiaxial loading in vivo. In this paper, we employ a novel experimental approach to study in situ the regional, multiaxial mechanical behavior of …

Thermal Characterization Of Microscale Conductive And Nonconductive Wires Using Transient Electrothermal Technique, Jiaqi Guo, Xinwei Wang, Tao Wang Jan 2007

Thermal Characterization Of Microscale Conductive And Nonconductive Wires Using Transient Electrothermal Technique, Jiaqi Guo, Xinwei Wang, Tao Wang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper, a transient technique is developed to characterize the thermophysical properties of one-dimensional conductive and nonconductive microscale wires. In this technique, the to-be-measured thin wire is suspended between two electrodes. When feeding a step dc to the sample, its temperature will increase and take a certain time to reach the steady state. This temperature evolution is probed by measuring the variation of voltage over the wire, which is directly related to resistance/temperature change. The temperature evolution history of the sample can be used to determine its thermal diffusivity. A 25.4 µm thick platinum wire is used as the …
