On The Equilibrium States Predicted By Second Moment Models In Rotating, Stably Stratified Homogeneous Shear Flow, Minsuk Ji, Paul A. Durbin

Paul A. Durbin

The structural equilibrium behavior of the general linear second-moment closure model in a stably stratified, spanwise rotating homogeneous shear flow is considered with the aid of bifurcation analysis. A closed form equilibrium solution for the anisotropy tensor aij, dispersion tensor Kij, dimensionless scalar variance q2/k (S/Sθ)2, and the ratio of mean to turbulent time scale ε/Sk is found. The variable of particular interest to bifurcation analysis, ε/Sk is shown as a function of the parameters characterizing the body forces: Ω/S (the ratio of the rotation rate to the mean shear rate) for rotation and Rig (the gradient Richardson number) for …

Agile Manufacturing System Scheduling Using Genetic Algorithms And Simulated Annealing, Sherif Masoud Jun 2004

Agile Manufacturing System Scheduling Using Genetic Algorithms And Simulated Annealing, Sherif Masoud

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Agile manufacturing is concerned with thriving in prevailing market conditions by quickly introducing new or modified products. This research deals with the scheduling of an agile manufacturing system (AMS), which performs both machining and assembly, with the objective of minimizing the makespan. The AMS allows the production of high varieties of modular products in small batches and at low costs. This problem is difficult to solve optimally and was solved in literature by heuristic algorithms. In the current research, four novel, genetic algorithms and simulated annealing-based, heuristics – General Genetic Algorithm, General Simulated Annealing, Heuristic Assisted Genetic Algorithm, and Heuristic …

Design Optimization Module For Hierarchical Research And Learning Environment, Oktay Baysal, Mehti Koklu, Ahmed K. Noor Jan 2004

Design Optimization Module For Hierarchical Research And Learning Environment, Oktay Baysal, Mehti Koklu, Ahmed K. Noor

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The present paper describes a learning module on design optimization courses within a hierarchical research and learning network (HRLN). In this environment a knowledge organization can be created as a hierarchical learning network to link diverse inter- and trans- disciplinary teams from a consortium of universities, industry, government agencies and the providers of learning technologies. It is an approach that builds on computer-based training, intelligent tutoring systems, interactive learning, collaborative-distributed learning, and learning networks. The present design optimization module has been developed and described herein, as a demonstrator of a learning module in this environment. This module allows for the …
