Correlation Between Particle Velocities And Conditions Of Abrasive Waterjet Formation, Wei-Long Chen

The velocities of water and abrasive particles in abrasive waterjet(AWJ) were measured by the use of Laser Transit Anemometer(LTA). A setup for the velocity measurement was constructed and a statistical technique was used to improve the accuracy of the velocity determination. A comparison of the magnitude of velocities determined by LTA, Piezoelectric Force Transducer and Schlieren Photograph clearly indicates the feasibility of the use of LTA.

The velocities of water and particles were measured for different diameters of water and slurry nozzles, abrasive mass flow rates and particle sizes. The performed experiments enabled us to evaluate the effects of conditions …

An Investigation Of The Combined Heat And Mass Transfer Processes In The Drying Of Hygroscopic Porous Media With Two Disparate Length Scales, Thomas Joseph Phillips

A mathematical model describing the drying process in a hygroscopic porous medium with two disparate length scales is formulated. The mathematical model is used to identify the important dimensionless parameters appearing in the problem; and, a parametric study is performed to determine the effects of varying these parameters on the drying process. Of particular interest in this study is to apply the model to the drying of large, round hay bales. Therefore a discussion of how the results of the parametric study impact on the efficient use of a hay drier is also presented.

Dimensional inspection with Vision Systems requires a careful selection of image analysis methods in order to obtain accurate information about the geometry of the parts to be measured.

The purpose of this project is to study, implement and compare different image evaluation methods and to show their strengths and weaknesses with respect to dimensional inspection. Emphasis is made on the inspection of circular features. The criteria of comparison for these methods are discussed. The problem of three-dimensional separation and flow control at a wing/body junction has been investigated numerically using a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code. The numerical code employs an algebraic grid generation technique for generating the grid for unmodified junction and an elliptic grid generation technique for filleted fin junction. The results for laminar flow past a blunt fin/flat plate junction demonstrate that after grid refinement, the computations agree with experiment and reveal a strong dependency of the number of vortices at the junction on Mach number and Reynolds number. The rigid body motion is studied in a combination of finitely and infinitesimally separated positions in planar, spherical, and spatial kinematics. A general new method for determining the locations of points and/or lines in a rigid body moving through finitely and infinitesimally separated positions is developed. These points and/or lines would satisfy the constraints of various types of binary links for planar, spherical, and spatial mechanisms.

Dimensional measurement or check is a major part of the inspection and quality control in manufacturing. Most of the measurement applications are based on contact methods. While a number of non-contact methods are available, they are limited in accuracy, in flexibility, or in the range of application areas. Finite element analysis programs for bending of linear isotropic micropolar elasticity are developed in this thesis. Isoparametric two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements are used to solve plate bending problems. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element formulations are developed. Corresponding finite element programs are then developed. Patch tests are performed on the two-dimensional elements. Convergence studies are undertaken for the elements. Several plates are considered to evaluate the finite element scheme. The effects of the coupling factor N and characteristic length 1 are studied. A post processor with graphical display of displacements is developed.

A stereo disparity algorithm is implemented on an industrial robot vision system. One camera manipulated by an industrial robot is used to obtain stereo images of an object. After a pair of stereo images are processed, the points of interest are selected from each image. The similarities of three types of feature characters are used to assign initial weights of the, matching probabilities to a set of point candidates. Then a relaxation method, which is based on probabilities of local connectivity, similarity of feature characters, and smoothness of matching, is used iteratively to improve the initial probabilities of image matching. …

This thesis presents the design of a gear driven anti- twister mechanism for a blood cell separator. The anti- twister mechanism allows for continuous feed and discharge lines that are rigidly attached to the rotating centrifuge head, thus eliminating the need of rotating seals. It is anticipated that the device using a gear driven anti-twister mechanism will have smoother power transmission and closer rpm tolerances.

An experimental program was aimed at identifying areas in low speed aerodynamic research where infrared imaging systems can make significant contributions. Implementing a new technique, a long electrically heated wire was placed across a laminar jet. By measuring the temperature distribution along the wire with the IR imaging camera, the flow behavior was identified. Furthermore, using Nusselt number correlations, the velocity distribution could be deduced. The same approach was used to survey wakes behind cylinders in a wind-tunnel. In this study a new adaptive remeshing method for high speed compressible flow analysis is presented. The method uses quadrilateral elements where possible, and triangles are introduced as needed. The primary goal of this study is to develop a remeshing method which uses both the concepts of unstructured and structured meshes for the finite element analysis to predict accurate aerodynamic heating in problems related to high speed viscous flows. A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effects of blunt leading edges on the viscous flow field around a hypersonic vehicle such as the proposed National Aero-Space Plane. Attention is focused on two specific regions of the flow field. Analysis of these flow regions is required to accurately predict the overall flow field as well as to get necessary information on localized zones of high pressure and intense heating.

Three types of acoustic nonlinearity parameters for solids are discussed. The results of measurements of these parameters for three polymers--polymethyl methacrylate, Polystyrene, and polysulfone--are presented.;The author has developed a new technique, using piezoelectric transducers directly bonded to the specimens, which allows the measurements of fundamental and second harmonics generated in the solids, and thereby the determination of nonlinearity parameter {dollar}\beta\sb3{dollar}, which is the ratio of a linear combination of second- and third-order elastic coefficients to the second-order elastic coefficient.;The second nonlinearity parameter, B/A can be determined from the temperature and pressure derivatives of the sound velocity.
