3d Printed Pcu/Uhmwpe Polymeric Blends For Artificial Knee Meniscus, Raissa Araujo Borges

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

3D printing was used to fabricate porous artificial knee meniscus material from biocompatible polymeric blends of polycarbonate-urethane (PCU) and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) to enable “weep” lubrication that mimics the native meniscus. 3D printed and molded pure PCU, as well as molded PCU and UHMWPE, were used for comparison. Preliminary printing was done to evaluate the impact of process parameters on the results. The samples were subject to a variety of rotational oscillating friction and wear tests under simulated body fluid and loading conditions to replicate the natural motion of the knee. Results show that 3D printed PCU samples yielded a …

A Spreadsheet Algorithm For Determining The Economic Feasibility Of Micro-Chp Systems In The Arkansas Manufacturing Sector, Ford R. Lewallen

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Combined heat and power (CHP) systems are not new to the market. However, advances in technology, specifically MicroTurbines, have presented new opportunities for installations of micro-CHP units - defined as 50 kWe to 300 kWe, specifically at small- to medium-sized industrial facilities. One pressing concern is whether or not an industrial plant has a high enough process thermal load requirement to fully utilize the energy output.

This thesis will discuss simulations that were run on several actual electric and thermal load combinations, which correspond to types of manufacturing facilities commonly found in Arkansas. Analysis of the plant usage profiles will …

Deformation Behavior Of Al/A-Si Core-Shell Nanostructures, Robert Andrew Fleming Aug 2017

Deformation Behavior Of Al/A-Si Core-Shell Nanostructures, Robert Andrew Fleming

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Al/a-Si core-shell nanostructures (CSNs), consisting of a hemispherical Al core surrounded by a hard shell of a-Si, have been shown to display unusual mechanical behavior in response to compression loading. Most notably, these nanostructures exhibit substantial deformation recovery, even when loaded much beyond the elastic limit. Nanoindentation measurements revealed a unique mechanical response characterized by discontinuous signatures in the load-displacement data. In conjunction with the indentation signatures, nearly complete deformation recovery is observed. This behavior is attributed to dislocation nucleation and annihilation events enabled by the 3-dimensional confinement of the Al core. As the core confinement is reduced, either through …

An Economic Analysis Of Residential Photovoltaic Systems With And Without Energy Storage, Rodney Moses Kizito Aug 2017

An Economic Analysis Of Residential Photovoltaic Systems With And Without Energy Storage, Rodney Moses Kizito

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Residential photovoltaic (PV) systems serve as a source of electricity generation that is separate from the traditional utilities. Investor investment into residential PV systems provides several financial benefits such as federal tax credit incentives for installation, net metering credit from excess generated electricity added back to the grid, and savings in price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) from the PV system generation versus the increasing conventional utility price per kWh. As much benefit as stand-alone PV systems present, the incorporation of energy storage yields even greater benefits. Energy storage (ES) is capable of storing unused PV provided energy from daytime periods of …

Computer Simulation Of Pore Migration Due To Temperature Gradients In Nuclear Oxide Fuel, Ian Wayne Vance May 2017

Computer Simulation Of Pore Migration Due To Temperature Gradients In Nuclear Oxide Fuel, Ian Wayne Vance

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A phase-field simulation model is being presented that captures the thermal-gradient-driven migration of pores in oxide fuel associated with fuel restructuring. The model utilizes a Cahn-Hilliard equation supplemented with an advection term to describe the vapor transport of fuel material through the pore interior due to gradients in vapor pressure. In addition, the model also captures changes in a migrating pores’ morphology. Simulations demonstrate that the model successfully predicts pore migration towards the hottest portion of the fuel, the centerline. The simulations also demonstrate changes in pore shape that are in agreement with previous experimental observations. Initially isotropic pores are …

Characterization Of Plastic Deformation Evolution In Single Crystal And Nanocrystalline Cu During Shock By Atomistic Simulations, Mehrdad Mirzaei Sichani

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to characterize the evolution of plastic deformation mechanisms in single crystal and nanocrystalline Cu models during shock by atomistic simulations. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed for a range of particle velocities from 0.5 to 1.7 km/s and initial temperatures of 5, 300 and 600 K for single crystal models as well as particle velocities from 1.5 to 3.4 km/s for nanocrystalline models with grain diameters of 6, 11, 16 and 26 nm. For single crystal models, four different shock directions are selected, <100>, <110>, <111> and <321>, and dislocation density behind the shock wave …

Feasibility Of Using Oxide Thickness Measurements For Predicting Crack Growth Rates In P91 Steel Components, Ralph Edward Huneycutt Iv May 2017

Feasibility Of Using Oxide Thickness Measurements For Predicting Crack Growth Rates In P91 Steel Components, Ralph Edward Huneycutt Iv

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There are only few methods available for predicting the age of cracks that are found in high

temperature structural components during service; among the promising ones is the oxide

thickness measurement technique. Oxide thickness profiles are taken from crack surfaces of

components and used for predicting the rates of crack propagation. This technique is particularly

suitable for high temperature components fabricated from ferritic steels commonly used in power

plants that run on fossil fuels. To implement this technique, it is necessary to fully understand the

kinetics of high temperature oxidation in these steels. In this study, the oxidation characteristics

of …

Optimization Of Reduced Graphene Oxide Deposition For Hydrogen Sensing Technologies, Matthew Pocta May 2017

Optimization Of Reduced Graphene Oxide Deposition For Hydrogen Sensing Technologies, Matthew Pocta

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Graphene is known to be a key material for improving the performance of hydrogen sensors. High electrical conductivity, maximum possible surface area with respect to volume, and high carrier mobility are a few of the properties that make graphene ideal for hydrogen sensing applications. The problem with utilizing graphene is the difficulty in depositing uniform, thin layers onto substrate surfaces. This study examines a new method of optimizing graphene deposition by utilizing an airbrush to deposit both graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) onto glass substrates. The number of depositions were varied among samples to study the effect …

Chip-Package Interfacial Stress Analysis And Reliability Implications For Flip-Chip Power Devices, Jonathan Gh Treco May 2017

Chip-Package Interfacial Stress Analysis And Reliability Implications For Flip-Chip Power Devices, Jonathan Gh Treco

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The solder in flip-chip assemblies experience high stress and strain because of thermal mismatch induced deformation. These deformations occur because of the differences of coefficient of thermal expansion between flip-chip assembly materials. The similarly in stress profiles between thermal induced and shear induced stress in solder joints enable the use of die shear testing as a representative technique for relating the max stress the flip-chip can withstand to cyclic thermal fatigue failures. In this work, two electronic device sample preparation types are evaluated: One set of samples are soldered together and other set of samples use epoxy as an adhesive. …

Blood-Brain Barrier-On-A-Chip Systems Based On 3d Printing, Cade I. Harding May 2017

Blood-Brain Barrier-On-A-Chip Systems Based On 3d Printing, Cade I. Harding

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This research focused on the design and testing of a blood-brain barrier (BBB)-on-a-chip microfluidic device produced using 3D printing. First, COMSOL simulations were used to define dimensions of the microchannel that would most accurately replicate the flow environment imposed on the blood-brain barrier, the wall shear stress being the most important characteristic. In using COMSOL, water was used as the simulated fluid and also the testing fluid in the fabricated devices. Therefore, the microsystem is designed to produce the BBB environment using water instead of blood. The numerical simulation parameters were based on theoretical calculations performed to scale up the …

System-Layout-Dependent Thermally Induced Solder Stress & Reliability Implications, Ange C. Iradukunda May 2017

System-Layout-Dependent Thermally Induced Solder Stress & Reliability Implications, Ange C. Iradukunda

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Electronic flip chip assemblies consist of dissimilar component materials, which exhibit different CTE. Under thermal cyclic operating conditions, this CTE mismatch produces interfacial and interconnect stresses, which are highly dependent on system layout. In this paper, sensitivity analyses are performed using ANSYS FEA to establish how the proximity and arrangement of neighboring devices affect interconnect stress. Flip chip alignment modes ranging from edge-to-edge to corner-to-corner are studied. Results of these FEA studies, demonstrated that closely packing devices together has the effect of making them act as one. This results in a significant increase in the thermomechanical stresses induced on peripheral …

Determining Drag Forces On 3d Printed Shark Skin And The Conditions In Which Drag Forces Are Reduced, Kayla M. Bartnicke

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

ABSTRACT

This project was conducted at the University of Arkansas with access to 3D printers and a water tunnel. The project examines drag forces over 3D-printed shark skin. Shark skin was chosen to be studied because of its unique three-pronged denticle shape and the assumption that this unique shape has a purpose, such as drag reduction.

A shark denticle was designed using SolidWorks software, multiplied 164 times creating a total skin area of 17.5 in2, and printed using both a MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer and an Ultimaker 2 Go 3D printer. The shark skin was initially printed …
