Contours For Planar Cracks Growing In Three Dimensions: Illustration For Transversely Isotropic Solid, Louis Milton Brock

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Three-dimensional dynamic steady state growth of a semi-infinite plane crack in a transversely isotropic solid is considered. Growth takes place on a principal plane with the material symmetry axis as one tangent. Fracture is brittle, and driven by compressive loads that translate on the crack surfaces. Translation speed is constant and subcritical, but direction with respect to the principal axes is arbitrary. An analytical solution is obtained, and examined in light of the dynamic energy release rate criterion for the case of a translating compressive point force. Introduction of quasipolar coordinates leads to a nonlinear first-order differential equation for the …

Contours For Planar Cracks Growing In Three Dimensions, Louis Milton Brock

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A three-dimensional dynamic steady state analysis for extension of a semi-infinite plane crack is considered. Fracture is brittle and driven by loads applied to the crack surfaces. An analytical solution is obtained, and examined in light of two criteria: energy release (rate) and strain energy density. Introduction of a quasipolar coordinate system allows, for each criterion, generation of a nonlinear first-order differential equation for the distance from the origin to any point on the crack edge. These in turn give insight into the crack contour generated by the crack edge. In particular, for loading by compressive point forces, the equation …

Stereoscopic Vision's Impact On Spatial Ability Testing, George Takahashi Jul 2011

Stereoscopic Vision's Impact On Spatial Ability Testing, George Takahashi

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

A look into spatial ability testing tools and the variations that past researchers made to focus on key factors that affect test scores, will demonstrate the need for tuning traditional testing methods to accommodate a wider demographic and provide more accurate results. Due to technological limitations of the time, a large variety of past spatial tests were developed by hand-drawings. Within this research, the addition of stereoscopic vision is analyzed to determine the value of said changes on human perception of spatial entities.
