Structural Investigations On Nanocrystalline Ni-W Alloy Films By Transmission Electron Microscopy

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

Electrodeposited Ni-W alloys have been investigated in the as-deposited state by transmission electron microscopy in order to investigate the microstructural features in dependence of the tungsten content. Within the tungsten content range from 7 at.% up to 12 at.%, the microstructure is nanocrystalline characterized by a bimodal grain size distribution, consisting out of 20 to 200 nm sized grains and also larger grains with several 100 nm characteristic dimension. No clear trend in microstructure formation is visible with W content or deposition conditions in the investigated W content range. Only solid solution phase characteristics were observed. The lattice constant is …

Parameter Identification Of Hydro Generation System With Fluid Transients Based On Improved Genetic Algorithm, Lin Gao Aug 2009

Parameter Identification Of Hydro Generation System With Fluid Transients Based On Improved Genetic Algorithm, Lin Gao

Lin Gao

More accurate models are adopted for dynamic stability analysis of hydro generation systems but the parameters of these models are often estimated roughly. Inaccurate parameters may decrease the analysis accuracy improved by using an accurate model. An improved genetic algorithm is proposed in this paper to estimate the parameters of a hydro generation system model which contains a series of basic differential equations to represent the flow transients more accurately. The numerical and experimental results show good accordance between the actual systems and the identification results.

Ultra-Thin Super High Frequency Two-Port Aln Contour-Mode Resonators And Filters, Matteo Rinaldi, Chiara Zuniga, Chengjie Zuo, Gianluca Piazza

Chengjie Zuo

This paper reports on the demonstration of a new class of ultra-thin (250 nm thick) Super High Frequency (SHF) AlN piezoelectric two-port resonators and filters. A thickness field excitation scheme was employed to excite a higher order contour extensional mode of vibration in an AlN nano plate (250 nm thick) above 3 GHz and synthesize a 1.96 GHz narrow-bandwidth channel-select filter. The devices of this work are able to operate over a frequency range from 1.9 to 3.5 GHz and are employed to synthesize the highest frequency MEMS filter based on electrically self-coupled AlN contour-mode resonators. Very narrow bandwidth (~ …

Demonstration Of Inverse Acoustic Band Gap Structures In Aln And Integration With Piezoelectric Contour Mode Transducers, Nai-Kuei Kuo, Chengjie Zuo, Gianluca Piazza

Chengjie Zuo

This paper presents the first design and demonstration of a novel inverse acoustic band gap (IABG) structure in aluminum nitride (AlN) and its direct integration with piezoelectric contour-mode transducers. The experimental results indicate that the IABG structure has a stop band from 185 MHz to 240 MHz and is centered around 219 MHz with maximum rejection of 30 dB. The ABG-induced phonon scattering causes a frequency band gap that prohibits the propagation of certain acoustic wavelengths. In this work, the IABG unit cell consists of a high acoustic velocity (V) center material, which is formed by 2-μm-thick AlN sandwiched by …

Design And Cfd Analysis Of Mass Transfer And Shear Stresses Distributions In Airlift Reactor, Rachid Bannari, Brahim Selma, Abdelfettah Bannari, Pierre Proulx

Abdelfettah Bannari Ph.D

The design, scale-up and performance evaluation of biological reactors require accurate information about the gas-liquid flow dynamics. In this study, we use CFD techniques to investigate important parameters of the multiphase flow dynamics on an initial airlift bioreactor in order to improve its design. Such parameters are distributions of shear stresses and mass transfer. Our initial proposed design of the airlift bioreactor was used for biomass growing. Specifically to produce cellulase enzyme using the fungus Trichoderma Reesei. However, the morphology of the microorganism obtained in this bioreactor was not appropriated to produce cellulase. Since the microorganism morphology presented a small …

A New Framework For Power System Identification Based On An Improved Genetic Algorithm, Lin Gao May 2009

A New Framework For Power System Identification Based On An Improved Genetic Algorithm, Lin Gao

Lin Gao

Accuracy parameters of power system model are of great importance in stability and security evaluation or simulation. Some of the conventional methods may have inadequate adaptability or effectiveness for identification of different power systems. A general framework for power system identification is proposed based on an improved genetic algorithm with a logarithmic fitness function and an adaptive searching space. It can be used for most power system models (linear or nonlinear) and can readily be performed on different models just by rebuilt corresponding map lists between the parameters and the coefficients of the general model. The numerical experiment and practical …

Aln Contour-Mode Resonators For Narrow-Band Filters Above 3 Ghz, Matteo Rinaldi, Chiara Zuniga, Chengjie Zuo, Gianluca Piazza

Chengjie Zuo

This paper reports on the design and experimental verification of a new class of thin-film (250 nm) Super High Frequency (SHF) laterally-vibrating piezoelectric microelectromechanical (MEMS) resonators suitable for the fabrication of narrow-band MEMS filters operating at frequencies above 3 GHz. The device dimensions have been opportunely scaled both in the lateral and vertical dimensions in order to excite a contour-extensional mode of vibration in nano features of an ultra-thin (250 nm) Aluminum Nitride (AlN) film. In this first demonstration two-port resonators vibrating up to 4.5 GHz were fabricated on the same die and attained electromechanical coupling, kt2, in excess of …

Demonstration Of Inverse Acoustic Band Gap Structures In Aln And Integration With Piezoelectric Contour Mode Wideband Transducers, Nai-Kuei Kuo, Chengjie Zuo, Gianluca Piazza

Chengjie Zuo

This paper presents the first design and demonstration of a novel inverse acoustic band gap (IABG) structure in aluminum nitride (AlN) and its direct integration with contour-mode wideband transducers in the Very High Frequency (VHF) range. This design implements an efficient approach to co-fabricate in-plane AlN electro-acoustic transducers with bulk acoustic waves (BAWs) IABG arrays (10x10). The IABG unit cell consists of a cylindrical high acoustic velocity (V) media, which is held by four thin tethers, surrounded by a low acoustic velocity matrix (air). The center media is formed by 2-μm-thick AlN, which is sandwiched by 200-nm-thick top and bottom …

Integration Of Aln Micromechanical Contour-Mode Technology Filters With Three-Finger Dual Beam Aln Mems Switches, Nipun Sinha, Rashed Mahameed, Chengjie Zuo, Gianluca Piazza

Chengjie Zuo

In this paper, we present the first demonstration of the monolithic integration of Aluminum Nitride (AlN) micromechanical contour mode technology filters with dual-beam actuated MEMS AlN switches. This integration has lead to the development of the first prototype of a fully-integrated all-mechanical switchable filter. Integration has been demonstrated by using AlN contour-mode MEMS filters at two center frequencies, i.e. 98.7 and 279.9 MHz. The micromechanical switch design used here is a novel three-finger dual-beam topology that improves the isolation and insertion loss of the switch by decreasing the parasitic coupling between the DC and RF signals over a previous AlN …

A Coupled Cfd-Kinetic Models For Cellulase Production In Airlift Reactor, Rachid Bannari, Abdelfettah Bannari, Brahim Selma, Pierre Proulx

Abdelfettah Bannari Ph.D

Cellulase production provides a catalyst for cellulose hydrolysis to glucose, to be used for eventual production of ethanol. The transport of reactants may influence the reaction rate remarkably, for the biological reaction, especially the enzymatic reaction, The transport behavior of the components in a biological system should be considered in the model. In this work, we propose a coupled model between hydrodynamics (twoPhaseEuler- Foam) and a kinetic model for batch and fed-batch cellulase enzyme production by T. reesei from cellulose/lactose substrate which is constructed from literature concepts and laboratory data. Good agreement is obtained between the results and experimental data.

Spreading Profile Of Dopant Solution On Pre-Sintered Silica Layers For Selective Area Doping Of Integrated Optic Planar Glass Samples Jan 2009

Spreading Profile Of Dopant Solution On Pre-Sintered Silica Layers For Selective Area Doping Of Integrated Optic Planar Glass Samples

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

The spread profile of potassium-permanganate (KMnO4) dye on a porous pre-sintered silica layer deposited via Flame Hydrolysis Deposition is presented. The work is aimed at controlling the dopant profile on the resulting glass layer for optically passive and active devices integration. KMnO4 is used as it allows visual qualification of its spread on the soot layer. Pre-sintered silica layers allow for application of dopants into the glass matrix via adsorption and pore retention. Selective area doping is achieved by applying specific volumes of the dye onto pre-selected areas on the sample using a micropipette. Higher dye volumes applied would result …
