There is a global lack of a means for monitoring air pollutant levels at a local level due to expensive and bulky instrument requirements. It is important to monitor toxic gas levels, as well as particulate matter levels, in the atmosphere to study their effects on human health and to further develop city- and community-level air pollution solutions. Multiphase fluid flows, or flows where the dynamics of an interface between unlike fluids can be observed, require study to further understand the fundamental relationships of the fluids’ properties and their dynamics in multiple applications. The scope of this research project pertains to low Reynolds number flow, a dense fluid spreading through a less dense ambient fluid, with the spreading fluid movement being driven by gravitational buoyancy forces and density differences. Air pollution is a major health hazard worldwide, accounting for one-eighth of all deaths in 2012 (World Health Organization). Globally, there is a severe lack of ground-based spatiotemporal monitoring of gaseous and particulate air pollutants, particularly in Africa, South and Central America, and the Middle East. This is in great part due to the high costs of air quality instrumentation that meet accuracy and reliability criteria set by monitoring agencies. Bacteria are found everywhere in nature, including within human/animal bodies, biomedical devices, industrial equipment, oceans and lakes. They can be found in planktonic state within a bulk liquid phase or attached to surfaces with the potential to form biofilms. In this study we are interested in the movement and distribution of bacteria near surfaces. The concentrations and fluid interactions of bacteria were characterized at various distances from a surface. Psuedomonas putida F1 was observed in a suspension near a surface. Bacteria movements were visualized with an inverted microscope at 40x magnification. P. putida F1 exhibited greater density in close proximity …
