Optimization Of The Building Envelope And Roof Shading To Reduce The Energy Consumption Of College Low-Rise Buildings In Indonesia, Nasruddin Nasruddin, Azimil Gani Alam, Mohammad Imroz Sohel

Makara Journal of Technology

Energy consumption in buildings is a crucial concern globally, prompting researchers to explore innovative solutions to mitigate its impact. This study investigates the optimization of building envelopes and roof shading systems of existing buildings in Indonesia to realize notable energy savings. Multiple scenarios were explored, with modifications to building envelopes and roof shading, highlighting the overall thermal transfer value as a key parameter. Using EnergyPlus simulations, the efficacy of natural ventilation in corridors and roof shading modifications was assessed in reducing energy consumption. The findings revealed that renovating existing buildings by optimization of the building envelope and roof shading by …

Isolation And Characterization Of Caffeine-Degrading Bacteria From Coffee Plantation Areas In Malaysia, Elvina Clarie Dullah, Mohd Fazli Farida Asras Dec 2023

Isolation And Characterization Of Caffeine-Degrading Bacteria From Coffee Plantation Areas In Malaysia, Elvina Clarie Dullah, Mohd Fazli Farida Asras

Makara Journal of Technology

Decaffeination by microbial degradation is currently the most optimal and low-cost approach, involving only microbial cells and/or their enzymes. The bacterium was characterized using a series of biochemical tests. Positive results were obtained from carbohydrate fermentation, citrate utilization, and catalase tests, while negative results were obtained from Voges-Proskauer (VP) and indole tests. Three different caffeine concentrations of 0.25%, 0.4%, and 2% were tested and measured through Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS) analysis. The highest caffeine reduction (89.25%) was found when 0.25% caffeine was used in the media. Only a small amount of caffeine was reduced to 0.4% and 2%, with 34.78% …

Briquette Of Empty Fruit Bunch Fiber As An Alternative Substitution For Binderless Fuel Methods, Nofriady Handra, Ade Indra Dec 2023

Briquette Of Empty Fruit Bunch Fiber As An Alternative Substitution For Binderless Fuel Methods, Nofriady Handra, Ade Indra

Makara Journal of Technology

Biomass development has been a key issue for the past few decades and will remain attractive in the future because of its cleanliness, renewability, carbon neutrality, and other advantages. This study aims to determine the optimal holding time for heating system briquettes by testing the heating value of empty fruit bunches fibers. The process of this research involves the use of one unit of briquette molding equipment by providing a heating system to the mold cylinder. Fibers were manually finetuned until they reached a size of 20 mesh (0.84 mm). Densification temperature is an essential factor that could affect the …

Heat Transfer Enhancement In Nanofluid Flows Augmented By Magnetic Flux, Kozhikkatil Sunil Arjun, Rakesh Kumar Dec 2023

Heat Transfer Enhancement In Nanofluid Flows Augmented By Magnetic Flux, Kozhikkatil Sunil Arjun, Rakesh Kumar

Makara Journal of Technology

Heat transfer enhancement could be realized using magnetohydrodynamics together with nanofluids specifically in flow micro-convection in a microtube, flow past a vertical porous plate, and square duct flow with discrete heat sources numerically. A critical value for the Rayleigh number, a maximum value for the magnetic field strength, a low Reynolds number, and volume concentrations exists for thermal enhancement to simulate nanofluid flow in a microtube. Heat transfer enhancement is observed with a reduction in the magnetic field strength in a flow past a heated porous vertical plate. Alumina nanofluid subjected to Hartmann number 10 can boost 81% enhancement in …

Challenges In Optimization For The Performance On Sustainability Dimensions In Reverse Logistics Social Responsibility, Sumarsono Sudarto, Katsuhiko Takahashi, Mochammad Dewo Aug 2023

Challenges In Optimization For The Performance On Sustainability Dimensions In Reverse Logistics Social Responsibility, Sumarsono Sudarto, Katsuhiko Takahashi, Mochammad Dewo

Makara Journal of Technology

Reverse logistics social responsibility is preferred as the most acceptable solution for addressing the challenges in stakeholders’ debate regarding social responsibility in supply chains because it involves as many actors as possible in the supply chain to perform social responsibility to achieve sustainability. This paper explores the challenges in achieving optimal policies in sustainability dimensions for collection and recycling facilities in reverse logistics. Sustainability dimensions include economic, environmental, and social aspects. The reverse logistics is modeled on System Dynamics, and a simplified statistical analysis using a contour chart is employed in numerical experiments. Results show a narrow area of optimal …

Accomplishments Of Endwall Contouring On Heat Transfer In A Passage Of A Turbine Blade, Kozhikkatil Sunil Arjun, Tide Porathoor Sunny, Narayanan Biju Aug 2023

Accomplishments Of Endwall Contouring On Heat Transfer In A Passage Of A Turbine Blade, Kozhikkatil Sunil Arjun, Tide Porathoor Sunny, Narayanan Biju

Makara Journal of Technology

The study explores axisymmetric endwall contouring with emphasis on the design of novel endwalls capable of heat load reduction. Optimizations with parameterization numerically determined by the endwall of flat shape led to the endwall of the contoured shape with substantial depletion of heat transfer in the passage of the vane. Heat transfer attributes for the generated contoured endwalls were analyzed for the exit Reynolds number of 2 × 106 . Endwall three-dimensional contouring resulted in remarkable changes in secondary flow vortices, jet-to-secondary flow interaction, and film cooling effectiveness on the flat endwall. The results pointed out that the axisymmetric convergent …

Performance Of A Solar Seawater Distillation With A Triangle Prism Cover And A Fin-Type Absorber, Risse Entikaria Rachmanita, Miftah Khoirul Umam

Makara Journal of Technology

Solar-powered distillation is a seawater distillation method that utilizes solar heat as its main energy source for the purpose producing freshwater and a by-product of the distillation process in the form of salt. This study aims to determine the performance of a solar seawater distillation design with a semi-batch system by combining a fin-type absorber plate and a triangular prism cover. This design is equipped with a reflector and absorber plate, which has a surface area of 0.3969 m2 with a volume capacity of seawater that can be accommodated in a basin of ±24 liters. It uses a knockdown system …
