A Composite Material-Based Computational Model For Diaphragm Muscle Biomechanical Simulation, Brett Coelho Jul 2018

A Composite Material-Based Computational Model For Diaphragm Muscle Biomechanical Simulation, Brett Coelho

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer related death among both men and women. Radiation therapy is the most widely used treatment for this disease. Motion compensation for tumor movement is often clinically important and biomechanics-based motion models may provide the most robust method as they are based on the physics of motion. In this study, we aim to develop a patient specific biomechanical model that predicts the deformation field of the diaphragm muscle during respiration. The first part of the project involved developing an accurate and adaptable micro-to-macro mechanical approach for skeletal muscle tissue modelling for application …

On The Application Of Mechanical Vibration In Robotics-Assisted Soft Tissue Intervention, Iman Khalaji

Mechanical vibration as a way of transmitting energy has been an interesting subject to study. While cyclic oscillation is usually associated with fatigue effect, and hence a detrimental factor in failure of structures and machineries, by controlled transmission of vibration, energy can be transferred from the source to the target. In this thesis, the application of such mechanical vibration in a few surgical procedures is demonstrated.

Three challenges associated with lung cancer diagnosis and treatment are chosen for this purpose, namely, Motion Compensation, tumor targeting in lung Needle Insertion and Soft Tissue Dissection:

  1. A robotic solution is proposed …
