Damage Identification In 3d Printed Metal Parts Using Deep Learning, Romaine Byfield, Alireza Modir, Ibrahim Tansel, Raniero Plaza
36th Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
An active Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) method called Surface Response to Excitation (SuRE), is used in this study to detect and quantify the damages created by a milling operation on additively manufactured metal plates. This method entails bonding two piezoelectric disks to the test specimens, one to excite it with surface waves from one end of the plate, and the other to sense the dynamic response to excitation at the other end. A sweep sine wave with a duration of 1 ms, ranging from 50-120 kHz is used as the excitation signal. Five stainless steel plates of identical size (195×54×2.5 …

36th Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
We compare the relevance of POMDP graphical models to addressing a given common task, the autonomous navigation, in mobile robotics, for robots in three different environments: legged walking, wheeled, and underwater robots. Principled approaches to the implementation of Intelligent robots in realistic environments with uncertainty exploit probabilistic models. The use of graphical models increases tractability and verifiability of probabilistic reasoning. Our robots face similar localization problems of passing by three doors on a corridor in a building, respectively, for the underwater case, of passing by three barrels in a pool. All the three robots are equipped solely with noisy sonars …
Experimental Investigation Of Liquid Height Estimation And Simulation Verification Of Bolt Tension Quantification Using Surface Acoustic Waves, Hani Alhazmi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, two separate applications that are related to surface acoustic waves in a solid media are presented. The first study concerns simulating and validating an experimentally study for quantifying the bolt tension in the bolted joints using the surface acoustic wave. The second study experimentally investigates measuring the level of a liquid existing on a solid surface via surface acoustic waves and exploring the effect of liquid existence on the propagation of surface acoustic waves over the solid surface.
Quantifying bolt tension and ensuring that bolts are appropriately tightened for large-scale civil infrastructures are crucial. This study investigates …
Manipulation And Patterning Of Mammalian Cells Using Vibrations And Acoustic Forces, Joel Cooper
Manipulation And Patterning Of Mammalian Cells Using Vibrations And Acoustic Forces, Joel Cooper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recently, there has been a surge in researchers and scientists investigating different methods which move, manipulate, and pattern biological cells. Multiple different mechanisms can be used for cellular manipulation, microfluidics, biochemical queues, and even optics, just to name a few. However, all techniques have their downsides. A majority of these methods require expensive equipment or reagents and can only manipulate a small number of cells at a time.
Some of the most common cell manipulation devices utilize acoustic pressure waves to move the cells to desired locations. Currently, it is unknown what level of force from these types of devices …
Acoustic Source Localization With A Vtol Suav Deployable Module, Kory Olney
Acoustic Source Localization With A Vtol Suav Deployable Module, Kory Olney
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A real time acoustic direction-finding module has been developed to estimate the ele- vation and azimuth of an impulsive event while function aboard a small unmanned air- craft vehicle. The generalized cross-correlation with phase transform method was used to estimate time differences of arrival in an 8 channel microphone array. A linear least squares approach was used to calculate an estimate for the direction of arrival. In order to accomplish this task, a vertical takeoff and landing small unmanned aircraft system was assembled to host the direction finding module. The module itself is made up of an eight-channel synchronous analog-to-digital …
Novel Transducer Calibration And Simulation Verification Of Polydimethylsiloxane (Pdms) Channels On Acoustic Microfluidic Devices, Scott T. Padilla
Novel Transducer Calibration And Simulation Verification Of Polydimethylsiloxane (Pdms) Channels On Acoustic Microfluidic Devices, Scott T. Padilla
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The work and results presented in this dissertation concern two complimentary studies that are rooted in surface acoustic waves and transducer study.
Surface acoustic wave devices are utilized in a variety of fields that span biomedical applications to radio wave transmitters and receivers. Of interest in this dissertation is the study of surface acoustic wave interaction with polydimethylsiloxane. This material, commonly known as PDMS, is widely used in the microfluidic field applications in order to create channels for fluid flow on the surface of a piezoelectric substrate. The size, and type of PDMS that is created and ultimately etched on …
A Novel Ultrasonic Method To Quantify Bolt Tension, Jairo Andres Martinez Garcia
A Novel Ultrasonic Method To Quantify Bolt Tension, Jairo Andres Martinez Garcia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The threaded fasteners are one of the most versatile methods for assembly of structural components. For example, in bridges large bolts are used to fix base columns and small bolts are used to support access ladders. Naturally not all bolts are critical for the operation of the structure. Fasteners loaded with small forces and present in large quantities do not receive the same treatment as the critical bolts. Typical maintenance operations such tension measurements, internal stress checking or monitoring of crack development are not practical due to cost and time constrains. Although failure of a single non-critical fastener is not …
Shelf-Scale Mapping Of Fish Distribution Using Active And Passive Acoustics, Carrie Christy Wall
Shelf-Scale Mapping Of Fish Distribution Using Active And Passive Acoustics, Carrie Christy Wall
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fish sound production has been associated with courtship and spawning behavior. Acoustic recordings of fish sounds can be used to identify distribution and behavior. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) can record large amounts of acoustic data in a specific area for days to years. These data can be collected in remote locations under potentially unsafe seas throughout a 24-hour period providing datasets unattainable using observer-based methods. However, the instruments must withstand the caustic ocean environment and be retrieved to obtain the recorded data. This can prove difficult due to the risk of PAMs being lost, stolen or damaged, especially in highly …
Dolphin Sound Production And Distribution On The West Florida Shelf, Peter Simard
Dolphin Sound Production And Distribution On The West Florida Shelf, Peter Simard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an investigation of dolphin sound production and distribution off west central Florida. Although a wealth of information exists on the production of common sounds (whistles, echolocation) made by captive, trained dolphins, far less is known about free-ranging dolphin sound production and of unusual sounds. In addition, while inshore dolphin populations or communities are the subjects of research projects in many locations, dolphins in offshore waters are less commonly studied. The objectives of this dissertation were to contribute information on free-ranging dolphin sounds and continental shelf dolphin distribution.
While echolocation has been rigorously studied in captive, trained dolphins, …
