Interference-Free Gas-Phase Thermometry At Elevated Pressure Using Hybrid Femtosecond/Picosecond Rotational Coherent Anti- Stokes Raman Scattering, Joseph D. Miller, Chloe Elizabeth Dedic, Sukesh Roy, James R. Gord, Terrence R. Meyer

Terrence R Meyer

Rotational-level-dependent dephasing rates and nonresonant background can lead to significant uncertainties in coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) thermometry under high-pressure, lowtemperature conditions if the gas composition is unknown. Hybrid femtosecond/picosecond rotational CARS is employed to minimize or eliminate the influence of collisions and nonresonant background for accurate, frequency-domain thermometry at elevated pressure. The ability to ignore these interferences and achieve thermometric errors of <5% is demonstrated for N2 and O2 at pressures up to 15 atm. Beyond 15 atm, the effects of collisions cannot be ignored but can be minimized using a short probe delay (~6.5 ps) after Raman excitation, …

Analytical Models For Atomic Friction, Yalin Dong, Ajay Vadakkepatt, Ashlie Martini Apr 2015

Analytical Models For Atomic Friction, Yalin Dong, Ajay Vadakkepatt, Ashlie Martini

Dr. Yalin Dong

In this methods article, we describe application of Prandtl–Tomlinson models and their extensions to interpret dry atomic-scale friction. The goal is to provide a practical overview of how to use these models to study frictional phenomena. We begin with the fundamental equations and build on them step-by-step—from the simple quasistatic one-spring, one-mass model for predicting transitions between friction regimes to the two-dimensional and multi-atom models for describing the effect of contact area. The intention is to bridge the gap between theoretical analysis, numerical implementation, and predicted physical phenomena. In the process, we provide an introductory manual with example computer programs …

Zwitteration Of Dextran: A Facile Route To Integrate Antifouling, Switchability And Optical Transparency Into Natural Polymers, Bin Cao, Linlin Li, Haiyan Wu, Qiong Tang, Bingbing Sun, He Dong, Jiang Zhe, Gang Cheng Apr 2015

Zwitteration Of Dextran: A Facile Route To Integrate Antifouling, Switchability And Optical Transparency Into Natural Polymers, Bin Cao, Linlin Li, Haiyan Wu, Qiong Tang, Bingbing Sun, He Dong, Jiang Zhe, Gang Cheng

Dr. Jiang Zhe

This communication reports a facile method for zwitteration of dextran with carboxybetaine (CB), which integrates superior antifouling properties, switchability between zwitterionic and cationic forms, as well as enhanced optical transparency into one polysaccharide material. This study provides a new avenue for generating multifunctional zwitterionic CB materials in situ.

Chalcopyrite CuInS2 (CIS) hierarchical structures composed of nanoflakes with a thickness of about 5 nm were synthesized by a facial solvothermal method. The thermodynamically metastable wurtzite phase CIS would be obtained by using InCl3 instead of In(NO3)3 as In precursor. The effects of the In precursor and the volume of concentrated HCl aqueous solution on the phases and morphologies of CIS nanocrystals have been systematically investigated. Experimental results indicated that the obtained phases of CIS nanocrystals were predominantly determined by precursor-induced intermediate products. The photocatalytic properties of chalcopyrite and wurtzite CIS in visible-light-driven degradation of …
