In the current landscape, computer-aided design (CAD) and computer numerical control (CNC) technologies have greatly enhanced manufacturing processes, allowing rapid and high-precision production. This project will focus on recreating a Wankel engine rotor, using SolidWorks for design and Mastercam for Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) simulations. The process begins with SolidWorks, which is used for a template of a high-precision rotor model. Mastercam is then utilized for the CAM programming, allowing for the creation of intricate tool paths and tool usage simulations. Aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) is a technology that allows phase separation in an aqueous environment. This technology can be used for the separation, extraction and purification of a variety of biomolecules and thus gained great attention in industry and academia. EPICS is a service-learning design program run through Purdue University. It strives to teach students design skills through providing for individuals, communities, and organizations in the surrounding area while mirroring engineering industry standards. BME (Biomedical Engineering) is a team within EPICS that strives to serve community partners through biomedical applications. William Sevick is an elementary school student with a congenital arm amputation. William and his family have been working with the BME team for the past three years designing assistive devices with the purpose of improving his actions in daily life such as eating, playing games, and riding his bike.

The project was a research endeavor focused on designing and building a vending machine for 3D-printed parts. It also had the secondary objective of catalyzing leadership qualities among its membership by emphasizing individual responsibility and forward thinking. The project began in the spring of 2015, when the topic of autonomous 3D-printing was chosen, funding was secured, and the majority of the leadership was brought on. Over the summer and into the fall semester the team developed project requirements and infrastructure, and gathered members from the parent organization. Engineering activities by nature are collaborative endeavors. Single-user applications like CAD, CAE, and CAM force a strictly serial design process, which ultimately lengthens time to market. New multi-user applications such as NXConnect address the issue during the design stage of the product development process by enabling users to work in parallel. Multi-user collaborative tool path planning software addresses the same serial limitations in tool path planning, thereby decreasing cost and increasing the quality of manufacturing processes. This thesis develops an algorithm to decrease high-curvature sections in tool paths for complex parts to achieve shorter machining times resulting in higher production rates. In the research sample cases, the algorithm decreased machining times by 1% to 9% for design-induced sections of high curvature and by 16% to 75% for CAM induced ripples using high path tolerances. High-curvature sections in tool paths are caused by complex part geometry, noise, and discontinuities in the model. Sculptured surface machining (SSM) is the end milling of sculptured surfaces with multi-axis machine tools. SSM consists of the tessellated model machining (TMM) and the parametric model machining (PMM). The former is gaining more and more attention over the past decade because it offers many advantages over the latter. New methods for various machining stages of TMM are proposed in this dissertation. First, in the 5-axis finish machining stage, a 3-dimension Configuration-space (3D C-space) machining method is presented.
