Heat Generation In The Railroad Bearing Thermoplastic Elastomer Suspension Element, Oscar O. Rodriguez, Juan Carbone, Arturo A. Fuentes, Robert E. Jones, Constantine Tarawneh

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The main purpose of this ongoing study is to investigate the effect of heat generation within a railroad thermoplastic elastomer suspension element on the thermal behavior of the railroad bearing assembly. Specifically, the purpose of this project is to quantify the heat generated by cyclic loading of the elastomer suspension element as a function of load amplitude, loading frequency, and operating temperature. The contribution of the elastomer pad to the system energy balance is modeled using data from dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of the specific materials in use for that part. DMA is a technique that is commonly used to …

Alternative Materials For Dental Restorations, Tyler Poole, Pierce Dunwoody, Adarsha Sapkota, Mario Rodriguez Jan 2016

Alternative Materials For Dental Restorations, Tyler Poole, Pierce Dunwoody, Adarsha Sapkota, Mario Rodriguez

Capstone Design Expo Posters

The senior design project ‘Alternative Materials and Methods for Dental Restoration’ has a purpose of addressing the unmet need or engineering problem related to dental restoration by determining the available manufacturing methods and materials as an alternative to ‘Intra-oral digital scanners’. The project deliverables for this project were the tooth crown prototypes with the tolerance within 50 microns. The CAD model for this tooth was tested for its strength, physical properties, and suitability. The prototypes were developed through an additive method, i.e., 3D printing. The constraints for this project were related to budget and printer. Buying a highly qualitative 3D …

Deformation Of Multifunctional Materials At Various Time And Length Scales: A Dic-Based Study, Behrad Koohbor Jan 2016

Deformation Of Multifunctional Materials At Various Time And Length Scales: A Dic-Based Study, Behrad Koohbor

Theses and Dissertations

The focus in the present work is to explore and characterize the underlying deformation and failure mechanisms in multifunctional materials including woven composites and polymeric foams, using full-field measurements. Attention has been especially drawn towards the challenges associated with characterizing these materials at extreme length and time scales, and investigating the advantages of full-field measurements to resolve the existing limitations. Accordingly, the current limitations in the study of dynamic deformation response of low-impedance materials are identified. An approach based on the general stress equilibrium is presented and successfully implemented to include the concurrent effects of inertia and material compressibility into …
