The Quality Of Life In Our City, B Bakhtyar

B Bakhtyar

Smart Growth (SG) development entails retracting the city; hence, it aims to house low-income residents at new affordable housing facilities within a metropolitan area. On the other hand, the dense living conditions would cause land price to surge due to the scarcity of available land. In this situation, housing developers would be more burdened by high land costs and the low-income families have no alternatives than pay high rental prices to building owners. This research comprises of constructs developed from selected literature review on Smart Growth concept and criteria of importance in meeting the Affordable Quality Housing standards (QOL indicators). …

In recent time, environmental awareness and concern over the rapid exhaustion of fossil fuels have led to an increased popularity of biodiesel as an alternative fuel for automobiles. However, there are concerns over enhanced degradation of automotive materials in biodiesel. The present study aims to investigate the impact of palm biodiesel on the degradation behavior of elastomers such as nitrile rubber (NBR), polychloroprene, and fluoro-viton A. Static immersion tests in B0 (diesel), B10 (10% biodiesel in diesel), B100 (biodiesel) were carried out at room temperature (25 °C) and at 50 °C for 500 h. At the end of immersion test, …

Modeling Large Modern Fossil-Fueled Steam-Electric Power Plant And Its Coordinated Control System For Power System Dynamic Analysis, Lin Gao Oct 2010

Modeling Large Modern Fossil-Fueled Steam-Electric Power Plant And Its Coordinated Control System For Power System Dynamic Analysis, Lin Gao

Lin Gao

Fossil-fueled steam-electric power plants have many outstanding advantages and are still one of the main power types in the world especially for non-European countries. The classic mathematic models are designed for traditional hydraulic governing steam turbine units. Single turbine and its control system models are used wildly for dynamic analysis in power system. Digital electro-hydraulic (DEH) control systems and coordinated control systems (CCS) are used in most of the modern large power boiler-turbine units. They are key elements in the operation of the power station and have great impact on the system responses to the frequency or load disturbances. But …

Advanced biofuels will be developed using cellulosic feedstock rather than grain or oilseed crops that can also be used for food and feed. To be sustainable, these new agronomic production systems must be economically viable without degrading the soil and other natural resources. This review examines six agronomic factors that collectively define many of the limits and opportunities for harvesting crop residue for biofuel feedstock in the midwestern United States. The limiting factors include soil organic carbon, wind and water erosion, plant nutrient balance, soil water and temperature dynamics, soil compaction, and off-site environmental impacts. These are discussed in relationship …

A Short-Distance Integral-Balance Solution To A Strong Subdiffusion Equation: A Weak Power-Law Profile, Jordan Hristov Oct 2010

A Short-Distance Integral-Balance Solution To A Strong Subdiffusion Equation: A Weak Power-Law Profile, Jordan Hristov

Jordan Hristov

The work presents an integral solution of the time-fractional subdiffusion through a preliminary defined profile with unknown coefficients and the concept of penetration layer well known from the heat diffusion The profile satisfies the boundary conditions imposed at the boundary of the boundary layer in a weak form that allows its coefficients to be expressed through the boundary layer depth as unique parameter describing the profile. The technique is demonstrated by a solution of a time fractional subdiffusion equation in rectilinear 1-D conditions.

Analysis Of Power System Frequency Responses With Hydro Turbines Incorporating Load Shedding, Lin Gao Jun 2010

Analysis Of Power System Frequency Responses With Hydro Turbines Incorporating Load Shedding, Lin Gao

Lin Gao

As shown in many recent works, the load-frequency behavior can be represented by system frequency response models especially for an islanding process. In this paper, a frequency response model incorporating an under-frequency load-shedding scheme is presented for islanding power system simulations. The model was applied for a realistic power system with hydro power generators. The hydro power generator model parameters were identified and similar responses were observed between the simulations and the accident records. The simulation results showed disadvantages of the primary frequency control systems of hydro power generators at the beginning of the load disturbances. The power system stability …

Heat-Balance Integral To Fractional (Half-Time) Heat Diffusion Sub-Model, Jordan Hristov Jun 2010

Heat-Balance Integral To Fractional (Half-Time) Heat Diffusion Sub-Model, Jordan Hristov

Jordan Hristov

The fractional (half-time) sub-model of the heat diffusion equation, known as Dirac-like evolution diffusion equation has been solved by the heat-balance integral method and a parabolic pro file with unspecified exponent. The fractional heat-balance integral method has been tested with two classic examples: fixed temperature and fixed flux at the boundary. The heat-balance technique allows easily the convolution integral of the fractional half-time derivative to be solved as a convolution of the time-independent approximating function. The fractional sub-model provides an artificial boundary condition at the boundary that closes the set of the equations required to express all parameters of the …

The Costs Of Residential Water Scarcity In Cyprus: Impact Of Climate Change And Policy Options, Theodoros Zachariadis

Theodoros Zachariadis

This paper presents an assessment of the costs of water scarcity in Cyprus, today and in the next twenty years, accounting also for the effect of projected climate change in the region. We focus on the residential sector, accounting also for tourism and industry. Using a simple demand function we first compute total scarcity costs in Cyprus for the entire period 2010¡V2030 for three scenarios of future water demand. Our central estimate shows that the present value of total costs due to water shortages in this period will amount to 72 million Euros (at 2009 prices), and if future water …

Optimisation Acoustique De Paroi Par Algorithme Génétique Et Influence De L’Habillage Par Une Couche Poreuse, Nicolas Dauchez, Olivier Doutres, Jean-Michel Genevaux, Jean-Christophe Le Roux

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

On montre, à l’aide …

Mesure Des Propriétés Mécaniques Des Matériaux Poreux À L’Aide D’Un Transducteur Électrodynamique Sans Fer, Nicolas Dauchez, Olivier Doutres, Jean-Michel Génevaux, Guy Lemarquand, Sylvain Mezil Apr 2010

Mesure Des Propriétés Mécaniques Des Matériaux Poreux À L’Aide D’Un Transducteur Électrodynamique Sans Fer, Nicolas Dauchez, Olivier Doutres, Jean-Michel Génevaux, Guy Lemarquand, Sylvain Mezil

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

Fractionation And Characterization Of Oil Palm (Elaeis Guineensis) As Treated By Supercritical Water, Mahendra Varman Munusamy M.Varman, H. Miyafuji, S. Saka

Mahendra Varman Munusamy (M. Varman)

In order to investigate the potential for efficient utilization of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), supercritical water treatment (at 380°C and 100 MPa for 8 s) was applied to fractionate extractives-free samples into water-soluble portion and water-insoluble portion. The water-insoluble portion was further fractionated into methanol-soluble portion and methanol-insoluble residue. Samples were prepared from various parts of oil palm, i.e., trunks, fronds, mesocarp fibers, shells, empty fruit bunches, and kernel cake. These fractionated products were then characterized analytically. The water-soluble and methanol-soluble portions were determined to be mainly composed of carbohydrate-derived products and lignin-derived products, respectively. The methanol-insoluble residue was mainly …
