On Local Stresses And Spring Constants Of Pipe-Nozzle Connection, Hson-Chih Sun Dec 1990

On Local Stresses And Spring Constants Of Pipe-Nozzle Connection, Hson-Chih Sun

Dissertations

This thesis presents a comprehensive study of local stresses and spring coefficients of pipe with a nozzle connection, analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). Six types of loading are discussed: radial force, circumferential moment, longitudinal moment, circumferential shear force, longitudinal shear force, and torsional moment.

For the local stresses, the bending and membrane stress factors due to each of these loadings are presented in a series of plots with various gamma (piping radius/thick-ness) and beta (nozzle radius/pipe radius) values. These stress factors will readily replace those previously published in WRC No. 107. This work not only gives more accurate …

Decomposition Of Measured Contours Into Geometric Features For Dimensional Inspection, Devaraj Rajkumar Nov 1990

Decomposition Of Measured Contours Into Geometric Features For Dimensional Inspection, Devaraj Rajkumar

Dissertations and Theses

Image processing systems used in Vision Assisted Dimensional Inspection usually output a set of boundary pixels representing the part edges. This boundary information must be divided into several subsets representing the various edges of the actual object, so that comparisons with the nominal part can be made.

The purpose of this project is to devise a method to divide the set of pixels obtained from the image processing system into subsets of pixels. Each of these subsets represent an edge in the contour of the actual object. This method must also detect transition points between the adjacent features. This project …

Integrated Control Of Thermally Distorted Large Space Antennas, Robert H. Tolson Oct 1990

Integrated Control Of Thermally Distorted Large Space Antennas, Robert H. Tolson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Studies on controlling the thermal distortion of large space antennae have generally investigated a single orbital position and have optimized actuator locations based on minimizing the RMS surface deviation from the original parabolic shape. One study showed the benefits of directly using far zone electric field characteristics as the performance measure; but, this approach resulted in a nonlinear programming problem. The objective of the current study is to develop an approach to designing a control system that (1) recognizes the time dependence of the distortion and (2) controls variables that are directly related to far field performance in a quadratic …

Navier-Stokes Simulations Of Flows About Complex Configurations Using Domain Decomposition Techniques, Kamran Fouladi-Semnani Jul 1990

Navier-Stokes Simulations Of Flows About Complex Configurations Using Domain Decomposition Techniques, Kamran Fouladi-Semnani

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An algorithm is developed to obtain numerical simulations of flows about complex configurations composed of multiple and nonsimilar components with arbitrary geometries. The algorithm uses a hybridization of the domain decomposition techniques for grid generation and to reduce the computer memory requirement. Three dimensional, Reynolds-averaged, unsteady, compressible, and complete Navier-Stokes equations are solved on each of the subdomains by a fully-vectorized, finite-volume, upwind-biased, approximately-factored, and multigrid method. The effect of Reynolds stresses is incorporated through an algebraic turbulence model with several modifications for interference flows. The present algorithm combines the advantages of an efficient, geometrically conservative, minimally and automatically dissipative …

A Comparative Study Of Edge Detection Techniques, Jaskaran Singh Dhaliwal May 1990

A Comparative Study Of Edge Detection Techniques, Jaskaran Singh Dhaliwal

Theses

The problem of detecting edges in gray level digital images is considered. A literature survey of the existing methods is presented. Based on the survey, two methods that are well accepted by a majority of investigators are identified. The methods selected are: 1) Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) operator, and 2) An optimal detector based on maxima in gradient magnitude of a Gaussian-smoothed image. The latter has been proposed by Canny[], and will be referred as Canny's method. The purpose of the thesis is to compare the performance of these popular methods. In order to increase the scope of such comparison, …

Simulation Of Random Packing Of Hard Spheres Using Monte Carlo Method, Sung-Ho Park May 1990

Simulation Of Random Packing Of Hard Spheres Using Monte Carlo Method, Sung-Ho Park

Theses

A computer based method of generating a random packing of hard spheres is described. Using a Monte Carlo method as employed in the field of Computational Statistical Physics, packing of hard spheres are generated and analyzed.

The mean packing fractions for the present assemblies of 1000 spheres are 0.555±0.015 after pouring and 0.582±0.018 after 10 cycles of shaking. These values are approximately 5 to 6 per cent lower than the experimental results of G.D. Scott[30], but similar with the result of Visscher & Bolsterli [17].

The mean coordination numbers are 5.97 and 6.33 for the pouring and shaking case, respectively. …

An Investigation Of The Dynamics Of Abrasive Waterjet Formation, Md. Ekramul Hasan Khan May 1990

An Investigation Of The Dynamics Of Abrasive Waterjet Formation, Md. Ekramul Hasan Khan

Theses

The aim of this research was to investigate the jet formation and the jet behavior, as characterized by the velocity field, the force exerted by the jet on a work-piece and the jet geometry. The velocity and force distributions were measured using a laser transit anemometer (LTA) and a piezoelectric force transducer (PFT) respectively for constant water pressure (334.6 MPa) supply. The jet structure and its instantaneous behavior were visualized by the used of high speed filming. LTA and PFT measuring techniques were established and verified. The measurements were performed under different operating conditions. It was found that at a …

Nonproportionally Loaded Steel Beam-Columns And Flexibly-Connected Nonsway Frames, Siva Prasad Darbhamulla Apr 1990

Nonproportionally Loaded Steel Beam-Columns And Flexibly-Connected Nonsway Frames, Siva Prasad Darbhamulla

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical study of the inelastic stability of nonproportionally loaded steel beam-columns and flexibly-connected frames is conducted. Specifically, solution techniques are formulated to predict the nonlinear behavior of cross sections, spatial beam-columns, and nonsway plane frames under the combined influence of imperfections, flexible connections, and nonproportional loads. A set of new inelastic slope-deflection equations for imperfect members are derived and their use illustrated through in-depth studies of flexibly-connected portal and two-bay two-story frames. These equations are derived from a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The member studies are carried out using a second-order finite-difference solution to a set of …

Control And Mechanism Interaction For Ground-Based Testing Of Space Structures, Li-Farn Yang Apr 1990

Control And Mechanism Interaction For Ground-Based Testing Of Space Structures, Li-Farn Yang

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the ground-based validation testing, the adverse effect of terrestrial conditions such as a gravitational force interferes with the dynamic behavior of space structures. A suspension system is developed to assess the structural characteristics in a simulated zero-gravity environment. Using a mechanisms approach, the synthesis of a noncircular disk with a torsional spring at its rotational axis is designed to counteract the gravitational force of test structures during the testing.

The multibody dynamics of a flexible steel beam carried on a rigid trolley has been investigated. The system is constructed in such a way that the rapid and large-angle slewing …

An Experimental Study Of An Axisymmetric Turbulent Boundary Layer Disturbed By A Periodic Freestream, Chithrabhanu Koodalattupuram Apr 1990

An Experimental Study Of An Axisymmetric Turbulent Boundary Layer Disturbed By A Periodic Freestream, Chithrabhanu Koodalattupuram

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Behavior of an axisymmetric equilibrium turbulent boundary layer disturbed by a propeller wake in the freestream was investigated experimentally. Tests were conducted in a low speed wind tunnel and measurements of turbulence quantities were made using an X wire probe and a constant temperature anemometer. The boundary layer flow on a cylindrical body was characterized by measuring its gross parameters and comparing them with classical values. Propeller speed was measured using an electronic circuit whose output signal was also used to trigger hot wire probe. Gross boundary later characteristics of the disturbed boundary layer did not deviate appreciably from the …

Finite Element Analysis Of Thermal Stresses In Semiconductor Devices, Joachim Karl Wilhelm Duerr Jan 1990

Finite Element Analysis Of Thermal Stresses In Semiconductor Devices, Joachim Karl Wilhelm Duerr

Dissertations and Theses

The failure of integrated circuit due to Silicon fracture is one of the problems associated with the production of a semiconductor device. The thermal stresses, which result in die cracking, are for the most part induced during the cooling process after attaching the die with Gold-Silicon solder. Major factors for stress generation in material systems are commonly large temperature gradients and substantial difference in coefficients of thermal expansion.
