Aerodynamic Flow Control Using Micro Rotating Cylinders, Alejandro Daniel Carrizales Aug 2023

Aerodynamic Flow Control Using Micro Rotating Cylinders, Alejandro Daniel Carrizales

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the aerodynamic and flow field characteristics of a NACA 0010 airfoil equipped with rotating cylinders near the leading edge, subjected to a flow with a freestream turbulence intensity of 4.3%. The airfoil was modified to integrate five micro-DC motors positioned at 14.5% of the chord length from the leading edge. The cylinders, with dimensions of 0.75 inches in diameter and 0.5 inches in width, exposed 3mm of their length to the incoming flow. A modified leading edge with eight sinusoidal protrusions (tubercles) was employed to compare the performance of the micro-rotating cylinder airfoil with an unmodified baseline …

An Acoustic Emission And Artificial Intelligence Approach To Structural Health Monitoring For Aerospace Application, Joseph Chandler Garrett Apr 2021

An Acoustic Emission And Artificial Intelligence Approach To Structural Health Monitoring For Aerospace Application, Joseph Chandler Garrett

Theses and Dissertations

In the area of aerospace and other applications, structural health monitoring (SHM) has been a significant and growing area of research in recent years. Throughout the operational life of aerospace structures, various damage scenarios may manifest, and it is of great concern to the aerospace community to develop methodologies for detecting and assessing these damage scenarios. In this paper, fundamental research on the use of the acoustic emission (AE) approach to SHM for fatigue crack growth is presented. In general, the AE approach to SHM and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) involves the sensing of ultrasonic Lamb waves propagating through a structure. …

Design Of Bio-Inspired Multifrequency Acoustic Sensors And Metamaterial Energy Harvesting Smart Structures, Mohammadsadegh Saadatzi Apr 2020

Design Of Bio-Inspired Multifrequency Acoustic Sensors And Metamaterial Energy Harvesting Smart Structures, Mohammadsadegh Saadatzi

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the limited availability and high depletion rates of nonrenewable sources of energy as well as environmental concerns, the scientific community has started to explore many alternative clean sources of energies. It is identified that civil, mechanical and Aerospace structures are always subjected to acoustic noises and vibration which could potentially be used as renewable source of energy. Roads and Industrial noise barriers are used inside industrial facilities alongside the walls, around construction pillars, nearby machinery and other equipment to separate quite work zones, protect walls, deliver extra safety and precautions while diminish sound and vibrational pressure. We hypothesized …

Structural Health Monitoring And Non-Destructive Inspection Of Composite And Metallic Structures, Asaad Qasim Migot Apr 2019

Structural Health Monitoring And Non-Destructive Inspection Of Composite And Metallic Structures, Asaad Qasim Migot

Theses and Dissertations

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Nondestructive Testing (NDT) techniques are being used as effective tools for investigating variety of civil, mechanical, and aerospace applications. In recent years, these techniques become such incredible tools for continuously monitoring of various structures. The aim of the dissertation work is to develop SHM and NDT methodologies for acoustic emission sources localization, damage detection and quantification in metallic and composite structures using a network of sensors, guided wave and developed imaging methods. This work is implemented through preparing metallic and composite specimens, setting up experiments, designing efficient networks of sensors, modeling guided wave interaction with …
