Use Of An Electrical Impedance Tomography Method To Detect And Track Fractures In A Gelatin Medium, Evan G. Lucas Jan 2014

Use Of An Electrical Impedance Tomography Method To Detect And Track Fractures In A Gelatin Medium, Evan G. Lucas

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Electrical impedance tomography is applied to the problem of detecting, locating, and tracking fractures in ballistics gelatin. The hardware developed is intended to be physically robust and based on off-the-shelf hardware. Fractures were created in two separate ways: by shooting a .22 caliber bullet into the gelatin and by injecting saline solution into the gelatin. The .22 caliber bullet created an air gap, which was seen as an increase in resistivity. The saline solution created a fluid filled gap, which was seen as a decrease in resistivity. A double linear array was used to take data for each of the …

Influence Of Mechanical And Thermal Boundary Conditions On Stabilizing/Destabilizing Mechanisms In Evaporating Liquid Films, Aneet Dharmavaram Narendranath Jan 2013

Influence Of Mechanical And Thermal Boundary Conditions On Stabilizing/Destabilizing Mechanisms In Evaporating Liquid Films, Aneet Dharmavaram Narendranath

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Liquid films, evaporating or non-evaporating, are ubiquitous in nature and technology. The dynamics of evaporating liquid films is a study applicable in several industries such as water recovery, heat exchangers, crystal growth, drug design etc. The theory describing the dynamics of liquid films crosses several fields such as engineering, mathematics, material science, biophysics and volcanology to name a few.

Interfacial instabilities typically manifest by the undulation of an interface from a presumed flat state or by the onset of a secondary flow state from a primary quiescent state or both. To study the instabilities affecting liquid films, an evaporating/non-evaporating Newtonian …

Direct Write Fabrication Of Waveguides And Interconnects For Optical Printed Wiring Boards, Joseph Carl Dingeldein Jan 2012

Direct Write Fabrication Of Waveguides And Interconnects For Optical Printed Wiring Boards, Joseph Carl Dingeldein

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Current copper based circuit technology is becoming a limiting factor in high speed data transfer applications as processors are improving at a faster rate than are developments to increase on board data transfer. One solution is to utilize optical waveguide technology to overcome these bandwidth and loss restrictions. The use of this technology virtually eliminates the heat and cross-talk loss seen in copper circuitry, while also operating at a higher bandwidth. Transitioning current fabrication techniques from small scale laboratory environments to large scale manufacturing presents significant challenges. Optical-to-electrical connections and out-of-plane coupling are significant hurdles in the advancement of optical …

Translation Studies On An Annular Field Reversed Configuration Device For Space Propulsion, Carrie Suzanne Hill Jan 2012

Translation Studies On An Annular Field Reversed Configuration Device For Space Propulsion, Carrie Suzanne Hill

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This research investigated annular field reversed configuration (AFRC)devices for high power electric propulsion by demonstrating the acceleration of these plasmoids using an experimental prototype and measuring the plasmoid's velocity, impulse, and energy efficiency.

The AFRC plasmoid translation experiment was design and constructed with the aid of a dynamic circuit model. Two versions of the experiment were built, using underdamped RLC circuits at 10 kHz and 20 kHz. Input energies were varied from 100 J/pulse to 1000 J/pulse for the 10 kHz bank and 100 J/pulse for the 20 kHz bank. The plasmoids were formed in static gas fill of …

Large Eddy Simulation Of Dispersed Multiphase Flow, Yejun Gong Jan 2012

Large Eddy Simulation Of Dispersed Multiphase Flow, Yejun Gong

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This thesis covers two main topics. The first is the comparison between the Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulation and the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of high injection pressure diesel sprays under non-evaporating or evaporating conditions. The second topic is the comparison of the fuel behavior in the spray process between the hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and the conventional EN 590, diesel #2 and n-heptane fuels.

To validate the RANS and LES spray simulations, comparisons were made with experimental data. The LES turbulence model, the initial drop size distribution (IDSD), the Levich jet breakup model and the CAB drop breakup model are …
