Thermal Transport In Lithium Ion Batteries: An Experimental Investigation Of Interfaces And Granular Materials, Aalok Jaisheela Uday Gaitonde

Open Access Theses

Increasing usage and recent accidents due to lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries exploding or catching on fire has inspired research on the characterization and thermal management of these batteries. In cylindrical 18650 cells, heat generated during the battery's charge/discharge cycle is poorly dissipated to the surrounding through its metallic case due to the poor thermal conductivity of the jelly roll, which is spirally wound with many interfaces between electrodes and the polymeric separator. This work presents a technique to measure the thermal conduction across the metallic case-plastic separator interface, which ultimately limits heat transfer out of the jelly roll.

The polymeric separator …

Parametric And Design Analysis On Thermoelectric Generators, Shouyuan Huang Aug 2016

Parametric And Design Analysis On Thermoelectric Generators, Shouyuan Huang

Open Access Theses

In facing the limited energy source reserves and environmental problems, thermoelectric generators (TEGs) are one of the promising waste heat recovery systems. The modern TEGs for exhaust stream (e.g. from automobiles) can improve the fuel economy by around 5%, taking advantage of the recent developed thermoelectric (TE) materials.

In this work, we aimed at designing a TEG as an add-on module for a gas-phase heat exchanger with maximized power output, and without negative impact (e.g. maintaining a minimum heat dissipation rate from the hot side). We first developed a parametric optimization algorithm using response surface method (RSM) and genetic algorithm …

Characterization Of Wake Effects And Loading Status Of Wind Turbine Arrays Under Different Inflow Conditions, Xiangyu Gao Apr 2015

Characterization Of Wake Effects And Loading Status Of Wind Turbine Arrays Under Different Inflow Conditions, Xiangyu Gao

Open Access Theses

The objective of the present work is to improve the accuracy of Actuator Line Modeling (ALM) in predicting the unsteady aerodynamic loadings on turbine blades and turbine wake by assessing different methods used to determine the relative velocity between the rotating blades and wind. ALM is incorporated into a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) solver in OpenFOAM (Open Field Operations and Manipulations). The aerodynamic loadings are validated by experiment results from National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Turbine wakes are validated by predictions of large eddy simulation using exact 3D blade geometries from a two-blade NREL Phase VI turbine. Three different relative …

Thermoelectric Waste Heat Recovery In Automobile Exhaust Systems: Topological Studies And Performance Analysis, Sumeet Kumar Oct 2014

Thermoelectric Waste Heat Recovery In Automobile Exhaust Systems: Topological Studies And Performance Analysis, Sumeet Kumar

Open Access Dissertations

The demand for improved fuel efficiency in automobiles has placed an emphasis on exhaust system waste heat recovery as a 40% of the fuel's chemical energy is lost to the environment in modern spark ignition engines. To advance fuel economy, researchers are currently evaluating technologies to exploit exhaust stream thermal power using thermoelectric generators (TEGs) that operate using the Seebeck effect. Thermoelectric generators have the potential to recover some of this waste energy in the exhaust stream potentially improving fuel economy by as much as 5%. ^ Attempts are made to maximize the electrical power generation by optimizing the thermoelectric …
