Balancing Of Production Line In A Bearing Industry To Improve Productivity, Sudharsan Sridhar, Balthilak Anandaraj, Santhosh B

The Hilltop Review

Line balancing addresses the issues of balancing production or assembly line and it generally minimizes the idle time for all the events and the combinations of workstations. Factors such as lack of materials, design changes in the product, labor position may also be needed for line balancing. We approached the industry and proposed a heuristic solution solving in two different platforms, by rearranging the existing tasks over the work stations, so that the idle time of the machines are reduced to minimum and the other is by using Timer Pro software where grouping of similar kind of activities are to …

Quality Improvement In Drilling Silicon By Using Micro Laser Assisted Drilling, Barkin Bakir Jan 2017

Quality Improvement In Drilling Silicon By Using Micro Laser Assisted Drilling, Barkin Bakir

The Hilltop Review

The micro-laser assisted drilling (µ-LAD) of monocrystalline silicon (100), using a diamond cutting tool coupled with a laser, was tested in order to improve the cutting edge quality of a drilled samples. The laser beam is transmitted through an optically transparent diamond drill bit and focused precisely at the tool-workpiece interface, where the material is under high pressure induced by the diamond tool. The influence of the laser power on the quality and the inner surface finish of the drilled materials is investigated. Different laser powers were used to carry out the experiments. The experimental results indicated that the µ-LAD …

Advantages Of A Finite Extensible Nonlinear Elastic Potential In Lattice Boltzmann Simulations, Tai-Hsien Wu, Dewei Qi Jan 2015

Advantages Of A Finite Extensible Nonlinear Elastic Potential In Lattice Boltzmann Simulations, Tai-Hsien Wu, Dewei Qi

The Hilltop Review

A new structure, generalized lattice nonlinear spring model (GLNSM), which adopts non-linear FENE-LJ potential instead of harmonic potential, has been coupled with lattice Boltzmann simulation for solving fluid-solid interaction problem. In this article, a significant work is the relationship between the GLNSM (FENE-LJ potential) and Young’s modulus has been described in detail. A validation has also been presented to prove that GLNSM is reliable.

The Hilltop Review

This picture was taken, at the racetrack the evening before the start of the North American Solar Challenge 2008 race in Plano, Texas. In this picture is the Sunseeker, Western Michigan University’s solar powered car that will race in the 2 week long, 2400miles long race from Plano, Texas to Calgary, Canada. Sunseeker was the only car in that race that feature a 2 electric motor drive system than the standard one electric motor drive system. Western Michigan University Sunseeker team brought back the sportsmanship award that year.

Microgas Turbine Engine Characteristics Using Biofuel, Edmond Ing Huang Tan, William W. Liou Feb 2012

Microgas Turbine Engine Characteristics Using Biofuel, Edmond Ing Huang Tan, William W. Liou

The Hilltop Review

Aviation fuels commonly used today are extracted from the kerosene fraction of the crude oil that is distilled between the gasoline and the diesel. Crude oil is not renewable and the world oil reserve is generally believed to be on the decline. In 2006, 6.3% of the world's refinery production was used for aviation fuel (Nygren et. al., 2009). At an estimated rate of 3% increase of fuel demand per year, aviation use alone will consume the world fuel production by 2026. Therefore, there is a need for the aviation industry to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and, perhaps, …

Comparison Of Computational And Experimental Aerodynamics: Results For A Wmu Solar Car Model, Yang Yang, William W. Liou Sep 2011

Comparison Of Computational And Experimental Aerodynamics: Results For A Wmu Solar Car Model, Yang Yang, William W. Liou

The Hilltop Review

Three-dimensional numerical simulations using FLUENT [1] were performed to model the airflow over the Sunseeker, an award-winning solar car that was designed and built at Western Michigan University. Converged numerical solutions on three different grids are reported and compared with the available experimental data, which include the lift and the drag coefficients. Also reported are the results obtained by using the second-order upwinding discretization on one of the grids. The comparison shows that the computed lift coefficients agree well with the experimental data for all the three grids and the different orders of numerical methods, indicating that the pressure field …
