Additive Manufacturing Of High Solids Loading Hybrid Rocket Fuel Grains, Stephen P. Johnson, Michael Baier, Ibrahim E. Gunduz, Steven F. Son
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Hybrid rocket motors offer many of the benefits of both liquid and solid rocket systems. Like liquid engines, hybrid rocket motors are able to be throttled, can be stopped and restarted, and are safer than solid rocket motors since the fuel and oxidizer are in different physical states. Hybrid rocket motors are similar to solid motors in that they are relatively simple and have a high density-specific impulse. One of the major drawbacks of hybrid rocket motors is a slower burning rate than solid rocket motors. Complex port geometries provide greater burning surface area to compensate for lower burning rates …

Optimization And Control Of Production Of Graphene, Atharva Hans, Nimish M. Awalgaonkar, Majed Alrefae, Ilias Bilionis, Timothy S. Fisher

Graphene is a 2-dimensional element of high practical importance. Despite its exceptional properties, graphene’s real applications in industrial or commercial products have been limited. There are many methods to produce graphene, but none has been successful in commercializing its production. Roll-to-roll plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is used to manufacture graphene at large scale. In this research, we present a Bayesian linear regression model to predict the roll-to-roll plasma system’s electrode voltage and current; given a particular set of inputs. The inputs of the plasma system are power, pressure and concentration of gases; hydrogen, methane, oxygen, nitrogen and argon. This …

Laser assisted manufacturing methods, such as direct metal deposition (DMD) and laser beam welding (LBW), are promising methods because of their higher precision and greater productivity when compared to traditional manufacturing methods. Because these methods are relatively new, the mechanical properties of samples produced by laser assisted manufacturing are not well understood. In this study the mechanical properties of samples produced by laser assisted manufacturing methods are analyzed and compared with data obtained from traditional manufacturing methods. The DMD process used Fe-TiC and Ti-TiC metal matrix composites, while LBW used AISI 304 stainless steel. The results vary widely with the …

Applications Of Additive Manufacturing Techniques In Making Energetic Materials, Peter A. Cattani, Trevor J. Fleck, Jeff F. Rhoads, Steven F. Son, I. Emre Gunduz

Energetic materials are currently manufactured using methods such as casting, which can only produce certain geometries. Additive manufacturing enables more flexible fabrication and the potential for improved material consistency. Additive manufacturing has transformed many industries, but has only recently been applied to the manufacturing of energetic materials. This paper describes the development of two processes to apply additive manufacturing methods to energetic materials. Method one applies a fused deposition modelling approach (FDM). 5 µm aluminum powder and PVDF were mixed and made into filaments using a Filabot Original filament extruder. Energetic filaments were created composed of 90:10, 80:20, and 75:25 …
Laser-Assisted Microchanneling On Pmma Substrate Utilizing Two-Pass Fabrication Method, Sijie Zhang, Yung C. Shin
Laser-Assisted Microchanneling On Pmma Substrate Utilizing Two-Pass Fabrication Method, Sijie Zhang, Yung C. Shin
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Microchannel is widely used in microfluidic devices for mixing, chemical reaction, detection, particle separation and etc. CO2 laser-based microchanneling of PMMA as a low cost, rapid, noncontact fabrication method has attracted the attention of industry. However, the typical V-shape grooves fabricated by CO2 laser microchanneling have limitations since the V-shape grooves will affect the flow behavior and heat transfer of the fluid, which are important to the performance of microfluidic devices. A two-pass fabrication method is proposed and investigated in this paper to improve the quality of the PMMA microchannel fabricated by CO2 laser. It was found …

There exists a pressing operational need to secure and control access to high-valued electromechanical systems, and in some cases render them inoperable. Developing a reliable method for depositing energetic materials will allow for the near-seamless integration of electromechanical systems and energetic material, and, in turn, provide the pathway for security and selective destruction that is needed. In this work, piezoelectric inkjet printing was used to selectively deposit energetic materials. Nanothermites, comprising of nanoscale aluminum and nanoscale copper oxide suspended in dimethyl-formamide (DMF), were printed onto silicon wafers, which enabled both thermal and thrust measurements of the decomposing energetic material. Various …

Gallium-Indium alloys are recently applied in fabricating soft devices, such as stretchable sensors, electric circuits, micro pumps and optics. Its printability demonstrates the possibility for a wide extension of the application. Current fabrication methods are inefficient when printing is most handled manually, and are highly dependent on material properties. There is need for a fast way to characterize material properties, and to functionally print the given shape on the substrate. This paper presents the construction of an efficiently integrated system with optical imaging and functional printing for Gallium-Indium alloys. The imaging section allows for characterization of material properties to fast …
Microstructure Development Of Granular System During Compaction, Chen Shang, Marcial Gonzalez
Microstructure Development Of Granular System During Compaction, Chen Shang, Marcial Gonzalez
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Granular materials is the second most manipulated material in the industry today. They are easy to transport and more and more newly developed materials cannot stand the process of traditional casting, like energetic materials and bio-materials, but will survive the powder compaction process. Having a better understanding of the microstructure development of granular systems during compaction process, especially for particles that will heavily deform under loading, will give an insight of how to better process the powders to produce materials with overall better performance comparing to bulk materials. The main theory and mechanism applied are Hertz law and nonlocal contact …
