Characterization And Tribological Behavior Of Diamond-Like Carbon And Nitrogen-Doped Diamond-Like Carbon Thin Films, Krishna Chaitanya Kadiyala

LSU Master's Theses

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have been extensively studied for more than two decades due to their highly attractive properties. These films exhibit unique mechanical, electrical and tribological behavior and thus, possess great potential for applications in tribology. However, the high level of internal stress developed and low thermal stability are the main drawbacks. Synthesis of nitrogen-doped DLC (N-DLC) offers the possibility of overcoming these drawbacks. In the present study, DLC and N-DLC films (with low N content) were deposited on Si substrates using a hybrid plasma-assisted CVD/PVD process. Film characterization in terms of microstructure, composition and chemical state of components …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Cobalt-Platinum Thin Films, Priya David Jan 2005

Synthesis And Characterization Of Cobalt-Platinum Thin Films, Priya David

LSU Master's Theses

Co-based alloy thin films have attracted a lot of interest, due to their excellent magnetic properties, that is essential in the field of magnetic recording media. Alloying Co with metals like Pt changes some of its intrinsic magnetic properties such as increasing the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants of the alloy. Co-Pt thin films and multilayers are more suitable for ultra high-density magnetic recording media because they have high-magnetic anisotropy, chemical stability, excellent coercivity and resistance to corrosion. In the present study, Co-Pt alloy and Pt/Co multilayered films were deposited on Si substrate using dual electron beam co-evaporation. The Co-Pt alloy thin …

Synthesis, Characterization And Tribological Behavior Of Nitrogen-Doped Chromium-Diamond-Like Carbon Nanocomposite Thin Films, Sunil Kumar Pal Jan 2004

Synthesis, Characterization And Tribological Behavior Of Nitrogen-Doped Chromium-Diamond-Like Carbon Nanocomposite Thin Films, Sunil Kumar Pal

LSU Master's Theses

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have been extensively studied for more than two decades due to their highly attractive properties. These films exhibit unique mechanical, chemical and electronic properties and thus, possess great potential for applications in tribology. However, two drawbacks in the DLC films are high level of internal stress developed during growth preventing deposition of thick films and low thermal stability. Synthesis of Me-DLC (Cr-DLC and N-doped Cr-DLC) presents a way to overcome these drawbacks. In the present study, DLC, Cr-DLC and N-doped Cr-DLC films were deposited on Si substrate using a hybrid Plasma assisted CVD/PVD process. Film characterization …
