The Design, Fabrication, And Validation Of A Film Cooled Rotating Turbine Cascade With An Actively Cooled Shroud In A Closed Loop Wind Tunnel, Christopher Michael Drewes

LSU Master's Theses

To test shroud and blade cooling effectiveness, a closed loop, heated wind tunnel housing a film cooled rotating turbine cascade with prescribed blade and vane geometry surrounded by a fully cooled shroud with a leading edge gap were designed and assembled on Louisiana State University’s campus. Heat transfer coefficients and film cooling effectiveness results were computed using a 1-D semi-infinite solid conduction analysis of material temperatures obtained with liquid crystal thermography. Proper analysis required a step change in air temperature; so a bypass loop provided mainstream air heating while maintaining the shroud and blades at ambient temperature. Also, analysis required …

Flow Distribution And Heat Transfer Coefficients Inside Gas Holes Discharging, Amirhossein Eshtiaghi Jan 2012

Flow Distribution And Heat Transfer Coefficients Inside Gas Holes Discharging, Amirhossein Eshtiaghi

LSU Master's Theses

Fluid flow and heat transfer coefficient associated with flow inside short holes (L/D=1) discharging orthogonally into a crossflow was investigated experimentally and numerically for (Re) ̅ ranging from 0.5×105 to 2×105, and blowing ratio ranging from 1.3 to 3.2. The basic configuration studied consists of a feed tube with five orthogonally located gas holes. Four different hole configurations were studied. The transient heat transfer study employs an IR-camera to determine the local heat transfer coefficient inside each hole. Velocity measurements and numerical flow simulation were used to better understand the measured heat transfer distribution inside the hole. The Nusselt number …

Pool Boiling Enhancement Via Micro Ratchets, Lance Austin Brumfield Jan 2011

Pool Boiling Enhancement Via Micro Ratchets, Lance Austin Brumfield

LSU Master's Theses

Nucleate boiling is an attractive method for achieving high heat flux at low superheat temperatures. It is frequently used for industrial applications such as heat exchangers and is being considered to cool advanced central processing units (CPU) which produce heat fluxes on the order of 1 MW/m2 and are becoming increasing less efficient to cool via forced conduction of air. The issues with implementing nucleate boiling as a cooling mechanism lies in the difficulty of quantifying the complex and numerous mechanisms which control the process. A comprehensive nucleate boiling model has yet to be formulated and will required in order …

Experimental Investigation Of Heat Transfer Rate In Micro-Channels, Pritish Ranjan Parida Jan 2007

Experimental Investigation Of Heat Transfer Rate In Micro-Channels, Pritish Ranjan Parida

LSU Master's Theses

Metal-based MHEs are of current interest due to the combination of high heat transfer performance and improved mechanical integrity. Efficient methods for fabrication and assembly of functional metal-based MHEs are essential to ensure the economic viability of such devices. The present study focuses on the results of heat transfer testing of assembled Cu- and Al- based microchannel heat exchanger (MHE) prototypes. Efficient fabrication of Cu- and Al- based high-aspect-ratio microscale structures (HARMS) have been achieved through molding replication using surface engineered, metallic mold inserts. Replicated metallic HARMS were assembled through eutectic bonding to form entirely Cu- and Al- based MHE …

Innovative Cooling Configurations For Low Emission Gas Turbine Combustors, Ryan Thomas Hebert Jan 2004

Innovative Cooling Configurations For Low Emission Gas Turbine Combustors, Ryan Thomas Hebert

LSU Master's Theses

Presently, effective cooling of modern low NOx combustor liners is achieved through combinations of innovative impingement configurations and other heat transfer enhancement methods. An inherent characteristic of conventional impingement configurations is the occurrence of downstream heat transfer degradation due to increased crossflow effects. In the present study, two different impingement configurations are studied. Both impingement configurations examined in this study aim to increase heat transfer effectiveness by reducing the detrimental effects of spent air crossflow. In Part I, a combination technique wherein impingement is combined with ribs placed in between impingement rows is studied. Three configurations with increased rib placements …

Effect Of Unsteady Wake, Free Stream Turbulence, Tip Geometry On Blade Tip Flow And Heat Transfer, Vikrant Saxena Jan 2003

Effect Of Unsteady Wake, Free Stream Turbulence, Tip Geometry On Blade Tip Flow And Heat Transfer, Vikrant Saxena

LSU Master's Theses

A comprehensive investigation of the effect of various tip sealing geometries is presented on the blade tip leakage flow and associated heat transfer. The linear cascade is made of four blades scaled up HPT turbine in a low speed wind tunnel facility with the two corner blades acting as guides. The tip section of a HPT first stage rotor blade is used to fabricate the 2-D blade. The wind tunnel accommodates an 116 degree turn in the flow through the blade cascade. The mainstream Reynolds number based on the axial chord length at cascade exit is 4.83e5. The center blade …
