Generation Of Inhomogeneous Acoustic Waves Using An Array Of Loudspeakers, Samuel E. Wonfor, Trevor A. Kyle, J. Stuart Bolton, Jeffrey F. Rhoads

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

In previous studies it has been shown that pressure fields created by inhomogeneous sound waves (waves which decay in a direction perpendicular to their propagation direction) are able to transmit energy into objects more effectively than ones created by conventional sound waves. This behavior may be useful in the detection of hidden explosive threats. To explore this, a device capable of constructing inhomogeneous waves is being developed. The proposed device is an acoustic array consisting of several high-frequency speakers. The speakers are independently driven to construct a desired inhomogeneous pressure field on a target surface. Inhomogeneous pressure fields were reconstructed …

Examination Of Ordering Effects In Sound Evaluations, Yiyun Zhang, Patricia Davies, Daniel Carr Aug 2017

Examination Of Ordering Effects In Sound Evaluations, Yiyun Zhang, Patricia Davies, Daniel Carr

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

It is difficult to predict sound annoyance responses because annoyance is an inherently subjective concept and the evaluation standard could be different from each person. Usually, annoyance models are functions of strengths of sound characteristics only, and these models can help engineers to improve sounds that machines make and minimize annoyance levels, but other factors can also influence annoyance ratings of products. The main goal of this research was to investigate ordering effects in sound evaluations when people are hearing a set of sounds in sequence. Of particular interest is how the response to a sound influences the response to …

Stability Analysis Of A Flexible Vehicle Model Controlled By Human Pilot Models, Abhishek Ajmani, Anil Bajaj Aug 2017

Stability Analysis Of A Flexible Vehicle Model Controlled By Human Pilot Models, Abhishek Ajmani, Anil Bajaj

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

There is a constant race among automobile manufactures to design safer vehicles while minimizing weight to reduce power consumption. Additionally, organizations like NASA and SpaceX are persistently working toward creating reliable, lightweight rovers to be used on the surface of Mars. However, the lightweight requirement often increases vehicle flexibility, which further develops a tendency toward instability in the lateral (sideways) direction. This investigation develops a mathematical model that represents the dynamics of a flexible vehicle in forward motion, and a heuristic human pilot model is proposed which controls the vehicle. Following such formulation, the combined vehicle and pilot model is …

The Influence Of Macroscale Stress Concentrations On The Near-Resonant Thermomechanics Of Mock Energetic Materials, Lauren A. Cooper, Allison R. Range, Jeffrey F. Rhoads

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The characterization of particulate composite energetic materials, both with and without stress concentration, is currently of great interest to the defense community. This work seeks to further characterize the self-heating effect of composite energetic plates, particularly around regions of high stress, when subjected to harmonic excitation near resonance. Mock energetic plates with macroscale stress concentrations are prepared in various compositions based on the PBXN-109 formulation, and are tested near the first resonant frequency using an electrodynamic shaker. The resulting mechanical and thermal responses are recorded using a laser Doppler vibrometer and an infrared camera, respectively. Upon comparison between the regions …

Dynamic Characterization Of Periodic Lattice Of Elastically-Connected Bi-Stable Elements Under Seismic Excitation, Lingwei Meng, Myungwon Hwang, Andres F. Arrieta Ph.D.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Metamaterials are engineered materials, typically in periodic arrangements, which exhibit unconventional or extreme properties not found in nature. Understanding the dynamics of metamaterials enables the design of structures with specific functionalities. The dynamics of metamaterials in linear regime has been relatively well studied in recent years, however the unique phenomena arising from nonlinearities in metamaterials are yet to be explored. In this paper, we focus on an array of bi-stable elements connected by elastic springs under various forms of external excitations acting on the entire system. The general equations of motion are derived to handle any degree-of-freedom (DoF) systems of …

Optimal Design Of Sound Absorbing Systems With Microperforated Panels, Nicholas Nakjoo Kim

Open Access Dissertations

As the development of technology makes economic prosperity and life more convenient, people now desire a higher quality of life. This quality of life is based not only on the convenience in their life but also on clean and eco-friendly environments. To meet that requirement, much research is being performed in many areas of eco-friendly technology, such as renewable energy, biodegradable content, and batteries for electronic vehicles.

This tendency is also obvious in the acoustics area, where there are continuing attempts to replace fiber-glass sound absorbers with fiber-free materials. The combination of microperfoated panels (MPP) (one of the fiber-free sound …

Development Of Data Analytics Tools For Acoustic Measurement Of Positive Displacement Machines, Dan Ding, Monika Ivantysynova, Paul Kalbfleisch

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Noise control is an important factor in evaluating the design of positive displacement machines. This research project aims to develop new tools in MATLAB, with emphasis on visual approaches, to comprehensively characterize the noise generated by positive displacement machines in spatial, temporal and frequency domains. Sound pressure level (SPL), sound intensity level (SIL) and loudness were calculated and plotted on a measurement surface surrounding the pump, which illustrates the spatial distribution of the sound field. In order to highlight the phenomenon within specific frequency bands, Butterworth filters were used to isolate desired frequencies, such that specific harmonic content or 1/3 …

The Influence Of Thermal Conditions On The Thermomechanics Of Particulate-Composite, Mock Explosive Samples Under Near-Resonant Excitation, Jaylon B. Tucker, Allison R. Range, Jeffrey F. Rhoads Aug 2016

The Influence Of Thermal Conditions On The Thermomechanics Of Particulate-Composite, Mock Explosive Samples Under Near-Resonant Excitation, Jaylon B. Tucker, Allison R. Range, Jeffrey F. Rhoads

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Vapor detection is one of the most effective ways to find hidden plastic-bonded explosives in the field today. In recent years, it has been demonstrated that providing near-resonant vibratory excitation to explosives dramatically increases their vapor pressure, allowing for easier detection. Unfortunately, there currently exists a limited understanding of the thermomechanics of energetic material. This study seeks to help fill this technical void by exploring the thermomechanics of mock plastic-bonded explosives using direct mechanical excitation with varying thermal conditions. Using two different ambient thermal boundary conditions (insulated geometric boundaries and boundaries with free convection), a 7" by 10" by 0.5" …

Dynamic Behavior Of A Clamped-Clamped Bi-Stable Laminate For Energy Harvesting, Ajay V. Kumar, Andres F. Arrieta Ph.D., Myungwon Hwang Aug 2016

Dynamic Behavior Of A Clamped-Clamped Bi-Stable Laminate For Energy Harvesting, Ajay V. Kumar, Andres F. Arrieta Ph.D., Myungwon Hwang

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Multi-stable laminates have many applications in morphing structures, energy harvesting devices, and metamaterials due to the specific characteristics attributed to the exhibited stable states. Changes between stable states allow for large deflections, on-demand variation of the stiffness of compliant structures embedded within these elements, and control of effective dynamic properties in periodic lattices. These changes in state can be accessed via a snap-through instability triggered by introducing a well-defined activation energy. The resulting oscillations could enable broadband energy harvesting via piezoelectric transduction and resistive circuits. In this paper, a clamped-clamped bi-stable laminate is studied to understand the behavior of the …

Implementing And Testing A Panel-Based Method For Modeling Acoustic Scattering From Cfd Input, S. Hales Swift

Open Access Dissertations

Exposure of sailors to high levels of noise in the aircraft carrier deck environment is a problem that has serious human and economic consequences. A variety of approaches to quieting exhausting jets from high-performance aircraft are undergoing development. However, testing of noise abatement solutions at full-scale may be prohibitively costly when many possible nozzle treatments are under consideration. A relatively efficient and accurate means of predicting the noise levels resulting from engine-quieting technologies at personnel locations is needed. This is complicated by the need to model both the direct and the scattered sound field in order to determine the resultant …

Efficient Modeling Of Sound Source Radiation In Free-Space And Room Environments, Yangfan Liu Aug 2016

Efficient Modeling Of Sound Source Radiation In Free-Space And Room Environments, Yangfan Liu

Open Access Dissertations

Motivated by the need to develop efficient acoustics simulations for sources in different room environments, a modeling procedure has been proposed that consists of two steps in general: (1) the modeling of the free-space radiation of the source based on measurements in a anechoic environment, and (2) the prediction of the sound field in a room environment based on that free-space information.

To achieve a high modeling efficiency, i.e., to reduce the number of modeling parameters while still maintaining acceptable accuracy, a Multipole Equivalent Source Model (ESM) with undetermined source locations has been developed for the free-space sound field prediction. …

Preliminary Design Tools In Turbomachinery: Non-Uniformly Spaced Blade Rows, Multistage Interaction, Unsteady Radial Waves, And Propeller Horizontal-Axis Turbine Optimization, Yujun Leng

Open Access Dissertations

Turbomachinery flow fields are inherently unsteady and complex which makes the related CFD analyses computationally intensive. Physically based preliminary design tools are desirable for parametric studies early in the design stage, and to provide deep physical insight and a good starting point for the later CFD analyses. Four analytical/semi-analytical models are developed in this study: 1) a generalized flat plate cascade model for investigating the unsteady aerodynamics of a blade row with non-uniformly spaced blades; 2) a multistage interaction model for investigating rotor-stator interactions; 3) an analytical solution for quantifying the impeller wake convection and pressure wave propagating between a …

Application Of Ultrasound In The Measurement Of Lubricant Fluid Film Thickness In The Piston-Cylinder Interface Of An Axial Piston Pump, Dhruv Subramaniam, Dan Mizell, Monika Ivantysynova Aug 2015

Application Of Ultrasound In The Measurement Of Lubricant Fluid Film Thickness In The Piston-Cylinder Interface Of An Axial Piston Pump, Dhruv Subramaniam, Dan Mizell, Monika Ivantysynova

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

In this paper a feasibility study has been conducted to determine a technique for the measurement of lubricant fluid film thickness in the piston-cylinder interface of an axial piston pump. The thickness of the lubricant film has a significant impact on the efficiency of the piston pump yet it still remains an uncertainty. If the lubricant film is too thin then friction will cause excessive damage resulting in deformation of interacting surfaces resulting in further uncertainty in thickness measurement. If the lubricant film is too thick then there is excessive leakage which will compromise the efficiency of the system. Acoustic, …

Efficient Exploration Of Quantified Uncertainty In Granular Crystals, Juan C. Lopez Ramirez, Marcial Gonzalez, Ilias Bilionis, Rohit K. Tripathy Aug 2015

Efficient Exploration Of Quantified Uncertainty In Granular Crystals, Juan C. Lopez Ramirez, Marcial Gonzalez, Ilias Bilionis, Rohit K. Tripathy

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Granular crystals present unique nonlinear properties that support standing waves. These depend on precompression and impurities. Thus, they can be used for different applications such as impact and shock dissipation. There are different models which rely on reasonable approximations and assumptions. While experimental results show good agreement with theory, there are experimental errors that are not easily explained and are usually attributed to the approximations made and phenomena that are not accounted for. This might be the result of not quantifying the uncertainty, since variables like the grain size, position, mass and Young modulus, of each particle, are uncertain. Building …

Influences Of Wind On Automotive Interior Sound Quality, Sara Huelsman, Patricia Davies, Daniel Carr

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The effects of noise on human health (both mental and physical) are well known, and motivation to decrease noise in daily life is prevalent. Wind noise within automotive interior cabins could be detrimental to human health and comfort because of the negative impact on speech intelligibility and fatigue overall. There is little information on human perception of wind noise in automobile interiors though Loudness and Articulation Index have been examined as predictors of human response. They have been found to predict well in some circumstances, but not in others. In this research, a variety of sound quality metrics are being …

Motion Control Of Robotic Arm With Command Shaping Method, Yumeng Wu, Peter H. Meckl, Alok Agrawal Aug 2014

Motion Control Of Robotic Arm With Command Shaping Method, Yumeng Wu, Peter H. Meckl, Alok Agrawal

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

In the manufacturing industry, lots of rapid point-to-point motion is required while the residual vibration is unfavorable. Residual vibrations caused by flexible elements are limiting the performance of mechanical system, especially when the system needs to make rapid point-to-point motion. As proved in earlier studies, avoiding natural frequencies of the mechanical system reduces the residual vibrations. This work is based on a non-linear, two-link flexible jointed robot with configuration dependent resonance. Command shaping method consisting different combinations of base functions and weighting factors are compared in this work. The compatibility of command shaping with classical feedback control structure allows a …

The Prediction Of Airborne And Structure-Borne Noise Potential For A Tire, Nicholas Sakamoto Jul 2014

The Prediction Of Airborne And Structure-Borne Noise Potential For A Tire, Nicholas Sakamoto

Open Access Theses

Tire/pavement interaction noise is a major component of both exterior pass-by noise and vehicle interior noise. The current testing methods for ranking tires from loud to quiet require expensive equipment, multiple tires, and/or long experimental set-up and run times. If a laboratory based off-vehicle test could be used to identify the airborne and structure-borne potential of a tire from its dynamic characteristics, a relative ranking of a large group of tires could be performed at relatively modest expense. This would provide a smaller sample set of tires for follow-up testing and thus save expense for automobile OEMs. The focus of …

Effect Of Compression On The Transmission Loss Of Porous Material, Yingchao Yang, J Stuart Bolton Oct 2013

Effect Of Compression On The Transmission Loss Of Porous Material, Yingchao Yang, J Stuart Bolton

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Porous materials are commonly applied in sound absorption in different places. Transmission loss, one of the vital parameters determining the performance of the material, will change when the material is compressed. Usually the compression that might affect the properties to the greatest extent are normal compression and the deformation can be simplified as 1D compression model. In order to verify the prediction, some formulas taking several parameters (porosity, tortuosity, flow resistivity and characteristic lengths) into account are applied and also the Johnson et al’s model of limp structure. Dynamic density of limp model and bulk modulus are thus obtained and …

Semi-Active Structural Control Of A 2-Story Shear Building, Alana K. Wilbee, Shirley Dyke

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

With continuing urban development across the world, it is becoming ever more important to provide increased structural safety against events such as earthquakes and strong winds. The field of structural control has recently been growing to meet these challenges through the use of semi-active control methods, such as the Magnetorheological (MR) Damper. However, due to the non-linearity of the device, the knowledge base surrounding the MR Damper and its various control algorithms still needs to be strengthened before large-scale implementation of this control method can occur. To address these issues, this study will examine a two story benchmark structure using …

Improvement On Cylinder-To-Cylinder Variation In Pcci Engines Using Variable Start Of Injection And Exhaust Valve Closing Timings, Aðalsteinn Axelsson, Greg Shaver Oct 2013

Improvement On Cylinder-To-Cylinder Variation In Pcci Engines Using Variable Start Of Injection And Exhaust Valve Closing Timings, Aðalsteinn Axelsson, Greg Shaver

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) is widely considered to be a possible method of meeting increasingly strict emissions regulations in internal combustion engines. PCCI can reduce harmful emissions substantially and at the same time increase efficiency relative to conventional combustion modes. Because of the nature of PCCI, changes in in-cylinder conditions have a greater impact than in conventional diesel engines. Therefore cylinder to cylinder variations are amplified which leads to problems such as misfire and decreased efficiency in cylinders with increased ignition delay and lower apparent heat release rate (AHRR) amplitudes. Two possible methods to counteract this effect in diesel …

The Stability And Control Of The Single Track Vehicles, Shyngys Karimov, Martin Corless Oct 2013

The Stability And Control Of The Single Track Vehicles, Shyngys Karimov, Martin Corless

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Bicycles, motorcycles and scooters are all examples of the single track vehicles. The dynamics of the single track vehicle involve many degrees of freedom and various modes which govern its performance, making a complicated and interesting research topic. Motorcycle in motion can roll, yaw, and steer about the steering axis. It has three main modes which determine the motion and stability of it, they are weave, capsize, and wobble. The motorcycle performance is limited by the behavior of its modes, and if even one of the modes becomes unstable, the vehicle will roll over, and crash. The goal of this …
