Surface texturing is a method of surface modification that fabricates micro patterns on the contacting surfaces to improve the tribological performance in sliding, lubricated system. It is found that the geometric design of textures has a significant influence on the performance of textured surfaces. Some important geometric parameters, such as the area ratio and the depth-over-diameter ratio, have been identified for textures in the form of circular dimples. This dissertation is comprised of two major interrelated foci. The first focus is to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the behavior of dry contacting bodies through both deterministic and statistical approaches. In the current research, different statistical micro-contact models are employed together with the bulk deformation of the bounding solids to predict the characteristics of the dry rough line-contact and elliptical point-contact including the apparent pressure profile, contact dimensions and real area of contact. This research deals with an experimental and numerical investigation of the frictional and thermal behavior of pin-bushing pairs, operating at reciprocating sliding motion or under heavy loads. Large interfacial temperatures developed due to frictional heating can cause failure. Therefore, numerical prediction and analysis of the surface temperature under various operating conditions are important. Laboratory tests using a pin-bushing tester provided measurements of the friction coefficient and temperature. Hard coated and plain (uncoated) bushings, both made of induction hardened stainless steel, were tested. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have been extensively studied for more than two decades due to their highly attractive properties. These films exhibit unique mechanical, electrical and tribological behavior and thus, possess great potential for applications in tribology. However, the high level of internal stress developed and low thermal stability are the main drawbacks. Synthesis of nitrogen-doped DLC (N-DLC) offers the possibility of overcoming these drawbacks. The present study reports the effects of electroplating parameters on the microstructure, and thus the mechanical and tribological properties, of nanostructured nickel. Electroplating was conducted in a Watt's type bath with a pH of 3.0 carried out using direct current in galvanostatic mode at current densities of 30 mA/cm2 and 15 mA/cm2 in electroplating bath temperatures of 30°C and 50°C. Grain size and distributions were determined from TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) micrographs.
