Super P-Sulfur Cathodes For Quasi-Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur-Batteries., Milinda Bharatha Kalutara Koralalage May 2023

Super P-Sulfur Cathodes For Quasi-Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur-Batteries., Milinda Bharatha Kalutara Koralalage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries have become a promising candidate to meet the current energy storage demand, with its natural abundance of materials, high theoretical capacity of 1672 mAhg-1, high energy density of 2600 Whkg-1, low cost and lower environmental impact. Sulfide based solid state electrolytes (SSEs) have received greater attention due to their higher ionic conductivity, compatible interface with sulfur-based cathodes, and lower grain boundary resistance. However, the interface between SSEs and cathodes has become a challenge in all solid-state Li-S batteries due to the rigidity of the participating surfaces. A hybrid electrolyte containing SSE coupled with a small amount of …

Nucleate Boiling Under Different Gravity Values: Numerical Simulations & Data-Driven Techniques., Sandipan Banerjee May 2022

Nucleate Boiling Under Different Gravity Values: Numerical Simulations & Data-Driven Techniques., Sandipan Banerjee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nucleate boiling is important in nuclear applications and cooling applications under earth gravity conditions. Under reduced gravity or microgravity environment, it is significant too, especially in space exploration applications. Although multiple studies have been performed on nucleate boiling, the effect of gravity on nucleate boiling is not well understood. This dissertation primarily deals with numerical simulations of nucleate boiling using an adaptive Moment-of-Fluid (MoF) method for a single vapor bubble (water vapor or Perfluoro-n-hexane) in saturated liquid for different gravity levels. Results concerning the growth rate of the bubble, specifically the departure diameter and departure time have been provided. The …

Atomistic Investigation Of Phase Stability And Sodium Ion Conduction In Sulfide Electrolytes., Sabina Zakhidovna Chertmanova Dec 2021

Atomistic Investigation Of Phase Stability And Sodium Ion Conduction In Sulfide Electrolytes., Sabina Zakhidovna Chertmanova

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we employ a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to identify the effect of chemical doping on (a) thermodynamic phase stability, and (b) Na-ion conduction in Na3SbS4 (NSS) solid-state electrolytes. We found that (a) Se doped electrolytes, namely, Na3SbSexS4-x undergo a tetragonal-to-cubic structural phase transition at x > 3 (Se-rich), and (b) the size, valence, and electronegativity of chemical dopants that substitute Na in Na3SbS4 have a cumulative profound impact on Na-ion conductivity. Specifically, substituting Na with higher valence …

Design Of A 300cm2 Pemfc Stack With Force And Cfd Simulation To Optimize Flow Channels, Gasket Design, And Clamping Forces., Robert M. Ench

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells are important to the future of green energy as hydrogen can be made with green technologies and store energy for later use. Fuel cells can efficiently convert the hydrogen to electricity as needed. This study uses Solidworks simulation to make design improvements to the fuel cell before the prototype build stage of testing; this saves money and time by reducing the prototype builds needed.

In this study, a multi-channel serpentine design with two outlets versus a single outlet is evaluated using CFD to investigate pressure drop. Lower pressure drops are desirable as less energy input …

Dynamic Analysis And Fabrication Of A Bi-Stable Structure Designed For Mems Energy Harvesting Applications., Masoud Derakhshani Aug 2020

Dynamic Analysis And Fabrication Of A Bi-Stable Structure Designed For Mems Energy Harvesting Applications., Masoud Derakhshani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thanks to the rapid growth in demand for power in remote locations, scientists’ attention has been drawn to vibration energy harvesting as an alternative to batteries. Over the past ten years, the energy harvesting community has focused on bistable structures as a means of broadening the working frequency range and, by extension, the effective efficiency of vibration-based power scavenging systems. In the current study, a new method is implemented to statically and dynamically analyze a bistable buckled, multi-component coupled structure designed specifically for low-frequency vibration energy harvesting systems in both macro and MEMS-scale sizes. Furthermore, several micro-fabrication steps using advanced …

Lithium Molybdate-Sulfur Battery., Ruchira Ravinath Dharmasena

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rechargeable energy storage systems play a vital role in today’s automobile industry with the emergence of electric vehicles (EVs). In order to meet the targets set by the department of energy (DOE), there is an immediate need of new battery chemistries with higher energy density than the current Li- ion technology. Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have attracted enormous attention in the energy-storage, due to their high specific energy density of 2600 Wh kg-1 and operational voltage of 2.0 V. Despite the promising electrochemical characteristics, Li-S batteries suffer from serious technical challenges such as dissolution of polysulfides Li2Sx …

Low Temperature Desiccants In Atmospheric Water Generation., Sunil Gupta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Surging global water demand as well as changes to weather patterns and over exploitation of natural water sources, such as ground water, has made potable water a critical resource in many parts of the World already – one rapidly heading towards a crisis situation. Desalination has been adopted as a solution – this is however energy intensive and impractical for most of the developing countries - those most in need of water. A renewable source of energy is solar thermal and solar photovoltaic. A plentiful source of water is the humidity in the atmosphere. This research is to push the …

Piezoelectric Bistable Buckled Beam Energy Harvester., Brian Edward Allgeier Aug 2017

Piezoelectric Bistable Buckled Beam Energy Harvester., Brian Edward Allgeier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A novel energy harvesting device design is presented to be created via microfabrication techniques. Such devices have countless applications for powering low-current electrical devices, especially wireless sensors or transmitters. This micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) design utilizes the piezoelectric response of a bistable buckled beam to gather electrical energy via ambient vibrations. While many traditional piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEH) consist of simple cantilever beam geometries, this nonlinear design utilizes inertial effects of torsional lever arms to actuate a central buckled beam to snap between its two stable states; such an abrupt strain on the piezoelectric beam potentially produces a significantly increased electrical …

Evaluation Of Two-Phase Evaporation Pressure Drop Correlations For Low Refrigerant Mass Flux., Anna Fenko Dec 2015

Evaluation Of Two-Phase Evaporation Pressure Drop Correlations For Low Refrigerant Mass Flux., Anna Fenko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to evaluate three currently popular two-phase pressure drop models for extremely low velocity refrigerant flow through smooth circular evaporators in household refrigeration systems. Experimental data was taken at mass fluxes under 70 kg/m2s for two refrigerants, R134A and R600A, internal diameters of aluminum evaporators ranging from 0.186 to 0.317 inches, U-bend internal radii ranging from 0.342 to 0.750 inches in horizontal and vertical orientations of evaporators. The geometry of the samples closely resembled a commonly used serpentine shape with multiple U-bends experiencing both, up- and down-flow of the refrigerant. Two empirical models, Müller-Steinhagen & …
