Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this collaborative research project involving the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), the Idaho State University (ISU), and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is to evaluate the feasibility of determining residual stresses in cold-worked, plastically-deformed (bent), and welded materials using a nondestructive method based on positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS). This technique uses γ-rays from a small MeV electron Linac to generate positrons inside the sample via pair production. This method is known to have capabilities of characterizing defects in thick specimens that could not be accomplished by conventional positron technique or other nondestructive methods. The generated …

Wind-Induced Exchange In Semi-Enclosed Basins, Rosario Sanay Oct 2003

Wind-Induced Exchange In Semi-Enclosed Basins, Rosario Sanay

OES Theses and Dissertations

The wind-induced circulation over laterally varying bathymetry was investigated in homogeneous and in stratified systems using the three-dimensional Regional Ocean Model (ROMS). For homogeneous systems, the focus was to describe the influence of the earth's rotation on the lateral distribution of the flow with particular emphasis on the transverse circulation. Along-basin wind-stress with no rotation caused a circulation dominated by an axially symmetric transverse structure consisting of downwind flow over the shoals and upwind flow in the channel along the whole domain. Transverse circulation was important only at the head of the system where the water sank and reversed direction …

Learning Real-Time A* Path Planner For Sensing Closely-Spaced Targets From An Aircraft, Jason K. Howlett, Michael A. Goodrich, Timothy W. Mclain

Faculty Publications

This work develops an any-time path planner, based on the learning real-time A* (LRTA*) search, for generating flyable paths that allow an aircraft with a specified sensor footprint to sense a group of closely-spaced targets. The LRTA* algorithm searches a tree of flyable paths for the branch that accomplishes the desired objectives in the shortest distance. The tree of paths is created by assembling primitive turn and straight sections of a specified step size. The operating parameters for the LRTA* search directly influence the running time and path-length performance of the search. A modified LRTA* search is presented that terminates …

Three-Dimensional Landau Theory For Multivariant Stress-Induced Martensitic Phase Transformations. Iii. Alternative Potentials, Critical Nuclei, Kink Solutions, And Dislocation Theory, Valery I. Levitas, Dean L. Preston, Dong Wook Lee Jan 2003

Three-Dimensional Landau Theory For Multivariant Stress-Induced Martensitic Phase Transformations. Iii. Alternative Potentials, Critical Nuclei, Kink Solutions, And Dislocation Theory, Valery I. Levitas, Dean L. Preston, Dong Wook Lee

Valery I. Levitas

In part III of this paper, alternative Landau potentials for the description of stress-and temperature-induced martensitic phase transformations under arbitrary three-dimensional loading are obtained. These alternative potentials include a sixth-degree (2-4-6) polynomial in Cartesian order parameters and a potential in hyperspherical order parameters. Each satisfies all conditions for the correct description of experiments. The unique features of the potentials are pointed out and a detailed comparison of the potentials is made for NiAl alloy. Analytic solutions of the one-dimensional time-independent Ginzburg-Landau equations for the 2-3-4 and 2-4-6 potentials for a constant-stress tensor and invariant-plane strain are obtained and compared. Solutions …

Developing A Sensing System For The Measurement Of Oxygen Concentration In Liquid Pb-Bi Eutectic, Yingtao Jiang, Bingmei Fu, Woosoon Yim

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is a candidate as a spallation target in sub-critical transmutation systems and as a coolant in nuclear programs. One of the primary concerns with LBE systems is the corrosion of stainless steel, the primary structural material used in nuclear systems. To mitigate this problem, trace levels of oxygen can be introduced into the system, causing the formation of a protective oxide layer at the interface between the LBE and steel. To protect the steel components, this oxide layer must be properly maintained. However, too much oxygen will produce unwanted oxide precipitation within the coolant and elsewhere in …

Laboratory Oxide Coatings: Physical Form And Surface Chemistry, Kea U. Duckenfield Jan 2003

Laboratory Oxide Coatings: Physical Form And Surface Chemistry, Kea U. Duckenfield

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The impact of dissolved trace metals on aquatic ecosystems and human health is controlled by sorption, i.e., binding to the surfaces of environmental particles. Since many environmental particles are coated with highly reactive substances, and since discrepancies in trace metal sorption behavior persist between oxides developed in the laboratory and environmental oxide phases, it was hypothesized that the physical form of oxide coatings may influence the chemical properties of the coated particle. Therefore, relationships between the physical forms of several different Fe(III) oxide coatings and the Cu(II) sorption behavior of the coated solids were investigated in comparison with the component …
