Cycle Time Reduction In Additive Manufacturing Using Peltier Thermoelectric Cooling Devices, Trevor Carlton May 2023

Cycle Time Reduction In Additive Manufacturing Using Peltier Thermoelectric Cooling Devices, Trevor Carlton

Honors College Theses

Thermoelectric cooling and the Peltier effect were discovered in 1834, over 188 years ago. Additionally, the first iterations of additive manufacturing (i.e., 3D printing) began in the early 1980s, more than 40 years ago. Despite these technologies’ age and years of advancements, the application of Peltier cooling-based devices in additive manufacturing has not yet been realized. These devices can be used for the active thermal management of print beds in 3D printers. Developing a mechanism to heat and cool a print bed can reduce the cycle time to manufacture a part. In 3D printing, waiting for the heated bed to …

Structural Design And Fabrication Of A Test Chamber To Test Ppes For Effective Particle Filtration, Matthew G. Adharsingh Apr 2023

Structural Design And Fabrication Of A Test Chamber To Test Ppes For Effective Particle Filtration, Matthew G. Adharsingh

Honors College Theses

This research project aims to design and fabricate a test chamber for testing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure effective particle filtration. The chamber has a special purpose, which is to measure ultrafine and submicron particles concentration in the air and test the ergonomic design of PPE based on its effective filtration. The project also considers the environmental aspects of the chamber such as the level of noise and vibration. The chamber will be designed to measure upstream and downstream particle count. Initially, the chamber was going to be made from wood, but the research team encountered difficulties in the …

Effects Of Varied Oxygen Levels, Laser Powers, And Scanning Speeds On Manufactured Components By Laser-Based Powder Bed Fusion, Amelia Mcnamee Apr 2022

Effects Of Varied Oxygen Levels, Laser Powers, And Scanning Speeds On Manufactured Components By Laser-Based Powder Bed Fusion, Amelia Mcnamee

Honors College Theses

This project addresses the effects of oxygen concentration, laser power, and scanning speed on the melt pool geometry of laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additively manufactured components. A parametric analysis using the substrate alone was conducted to determine a range of desirable laser powers and scanning speeds. The parameter with the more significant effect will be decided upon based on the depth-to-width ratios (D/W) of the resultant laser weld bead. A range of oxygen levels and scan speeds was selected for the next phase. These samples were then be analyzed for depth-to-width ratios. It was expected that higher oxygen concentrations …

Structural Health Monitoring Of Bioprinted Materials, Kathryn H. Mcintosh Apr 2022

Structural Health Monitoring Of Bioprinted Materials, Kathryn H. Mcintosh

Honors College Theses

Bioprinting is a new method that utilizes additive manufacturing to construct organs, tissues, and other biostructures. This method presents endless possibilities - less reliance on organ donors (according to the Health Resources and Services Administration, 17 people die each day waiting for an organ transplant in the U.S.), more transplant opportunities, and the ability to save significantly more lives. While bioprinting has opened a new frontier in the biomedical field, there may be some research issues that need to be addressed. For example, numerous researchers have focused on creating novel approaches to print complicated geometries. However, the structural integrity or …

Analysis Of Data To Evaluate The Performance Of Air Filters Used For Filtering Nanoscale Particles Generated By Smoke, Pascal J. Wagemaker Apr 2021

Analysis Of Data To Evaluate The Performance Of Air Filters Used For Filtering Nanoscale Particles Generated By Smoke, Pascal J. Wagemaker

Honors College Theses

The main goal of this research project is to determine the effectiveness of commercially available air filters and to compare different kinds of commercially available air filters in certain categories. With recent record-breaking wildfires and the Covid-19 pandemic, research on the effects and features of nanoparticles has become increasingly important. Inhalation of nanoparticles in smoke can result in severe health effects on humans, affecting especially the respiratory system. As nanoparticles can pass through cell membranes, absorption occurs rapidly and affects many different parts and functions of the human body. While air filters are an effective method of reducing small-sized particles …

Scalability Of Microscale Fractal-Like Branching Channel Networks, James R. Miller Iii Jan 2016

Scalability Of Microscale Fractal-Like Branching Channel Networks, James R. Miller Iii

Honors College Theses

Fractal-like branching channel networks have been shown to offer the advantages of reduced pumping power and lower maximum wall temperatures when employed in the design of microscale heat sinks. Unfortunately, previous literature has been limited to microscale flow networks. In this paper, a microscale flow network will be scaled up to result in a mesoscale flow network and a macroscale flow network. In order to compare the pressure drop across the flow networks of varying scales the results will be nondimensionalized in the form of the Euler number. For a laminar inlet Reynolds number the microscale, mesoscale, and macroscale fractal-like …
